Snoop And The Crew Talk
By Chuck 'Jigsaw' Creekmur, BET.Com Staff Writer

Posted Nov. 1, 2002-- In the recent past, Snoop Dogg has undergone a dramatic metamorphosis, a dramatic departure from the weed-smoking, Crip-walking murder suspect of the early to mid-90s. And although the rapper has gone from taking part in porno movies to verbally jousting with Suge Knight, he said he is most concerned with revamping his image from gangsta to CEO. In summer the rapper dropped Welcome To Tha House Vol. 1, which included an extensive roster of artists, and is currently working on Paid Da Cost To Be Da Boss, the album that will represent his complete transformation.

Snoop says his last CD, The Last Meal, meant nobody will eat off him again, but Da Cost, adopted from an antiquated James Brown record, means liberation. "I'm checking all you suckas that deserve to be checked and I ain't dealing with no more underbosses," he states aggressively.

With no production from former mentor Dr. Dre, Snoop says Da Cost will feature a completely overhauled sonic backdrop with more variety than ever in his career.

"The first single is produced by The Neptunes, called 'From The Church To The Palace,'" he says with a hint of anticipation. "I got production from Hi-Tek, DJ Premier, Battlecat, E-Swift -- it's going down jack, you can believe that.  I got a couple of new producers.  I'm just doing the most from the coast,"

"Da Boss," as the 30 year old now deems himself, has been performing spot dates throughout the nation supporting his artists, The All-Stars like E-White, Bad Azz, Soopafly, LaToiya, Bigg Uncle June Bugg and others.

As expected, the All-Stars have a very different view of Snoop from dissented parties like Bill O'Reilly and Chicago's Project Islamic Hope, both of whom spoke out against the rapper's appearance on "A Very Special Muppet X-mas Special."

Rapper and funky crooner, Mr. Kane has been party to several hip-hop dynasties over his longstanding career and he says Snoop is the best boss he has had thus far.

"I had a chance to be with Eazy-E, Ruthless [Records] and I've seen a lot of empires, but out of Master P, Eazy-E, [Snoop] is the coolest, realest person you ever want to be with, he says with an almost proud demeanor.

And contradicting drastically, the notion of Snoop as a pariah to normal society, Uncle Rico, Doggy Style Records resident gospel singer (yes, gospel singer), says the budding CEO is "a role model for all."

Normally seen dancing or making humorous wisecracks, Uncle June Bugg says his nephew's decision to move forward from his gangsta mantra will ensure his success. "The Bible says a wise man will change and a fool never will," he says, "Snoop is making that change and it's going to help him become a huge success when he does business."

This fall, Snoop relaunched his clothing line, also the subject of protests after being sold in Macy's department stores, with a fresh, vibrant new look. He admits the line hasn't flourished, but is bent on making it fashionable. "The first two times we came with it, it really didn't hit too well.  But on its third season, we plan on doing big things with it," he says.//what's the line called?//

Snoop also says his company is developing a children's line of clothing, dubbed Lil' Snoop Dogg, and another that will cater to the females, Angel Wear. Incidentally, Snoop's own wife, Shante Taylor, whom he calls a walking "fashion statement," will head up the ladies' line.

Although he is expanding his empire, music, spirituality and family are his primary concerns and the rapper even has a spiritual advisor in Bishop Don Juan, a pimp-turned-preacher, who helped convince him to change his life.

"You going to need that type of person.  So that's something I appreciate in him," he says of the minister. "He's putting God in my life -- even though he's never left my life, but he's helped me to be more about it and not to be ashamed."

The All-Stars completely support "Da Boss," even though some of them still party and engage in other illicit activities like smoking marijuana and sippin' gin-n-juice. They remain a firm unit, despite their motley crew status.

"A family that prays together stays together. Any house without the good Master [God], don't work. We come together a team," said Uncle Rico.

And likewise, Snoop says he is indelibly loyal to his family, friends and artists and that, indeed, moves his business endeavors and maturing spirit.

"They all need me.  They depend on me.  I move the game," Snoop finishes. "The game is terrible without me."

Snoop tryin' to bring up his own production crew instead of ridin' wit' tha same ol' shit........its always hella tight to hear Snoop ova' Dre beats but its even more tight when Snoop does it his own way and shuts up tha hataz witout Dre.

His own production crew?
Neptunes, DJ Premier, E-Swift, Hi-Tek... LOL!!
He's basically searching the U.S. for big-name producers he haven't worked with.
Fred Wreck is only on a few cuts, and Battlecats sound is played out.

This SHOULD have been the ultimate line-up for a Snoop-album:
Alchemist, Dr.Dre, Fred Wreck, Meech Wells & Scott Storch.
No more, no less.
Westcoast-flavor with a touch of timeless flava (Alchemist)

The point I was tryin' to make was that Snoop wants to show every1 that he dont have to have Dre to sell records. Of course we would like to see ur "ultimate lineup", who wouldnt, but just like u say that by tha looks of things Snoop's album could be better, tha same goes for Man Vs. Machine......

Snoop and Dre = untouchable
Snoop and Battlecat = mainly wack
Snoop and Fred Wreck = somtimes ok
Snoop and Meech Wells = so so
Snoop and Jellyroll = lame
Snoop and Neptunes = wack

so basically this album is gonna be wack?

I have to disagree with you S.G. for V., yes dre & snoop are untouchable, but dre's beats at present wouldn't really suit snoop & bring out the beat in him, although the beat will still bang.
Snoop & battlecat are mainly average, but come up with some dope tracts (eg. g'd up, welcome 2 the house from tha eastsidaz). But I haven't heard from battlecat for ages, so it would be interesting how his production has changed, if any.
Snoop & fred Wreck is most part dope, sometimes the beat overpowers snoop eg. I pledge alligence from eastsidaz album. Whautduyakno was a tight tight track, and suited snoop perfectly.
Snoop & meech is a classic combination imo, meech compliments snoop perfectly in 9/10 of tracks. Although I was feeling the tracks more on the last meal and his previous work. For real from the bootleg was crazy, snoop always has a good flowover a meech beat.
Jelly Roll & snoop, on the most part are very good, why do they hate on Jelly Roll? The only track I didn't like with them together is I Can't Swim ,and that was mainly due to snoop collins & Sir dogg.
Neptunes and Snoop, will be difficult to tell because we've only heard 1 track in whole. From tha chuuuch.. was good, had a good drum beat, and snoop had good lyrics & flow, but that synth sound drowned out snoop. Beautiful sounds much better from what I've heard from the video though.

P.S.
Why is there 2 versions of that video (Chuuuch 2 palace), they are almost identical, but they added a scene with daz, warren G etc for a slit second, and they play a different part of beautiful when snoop gets beaten up by that police officer, you actually hear part of snoops verse instead of charlie wilson?

Meech wells is better for snoop than fred wreck to me, "Suited n booted" is not a tight song plus the beat is wack....i think its the wackest beat from meech. "No backtrackin" is a fuckin blazin ( :( unreleased) song and snoop comes tight on that meech's beat,he needs to work more with him.
Fred wreck's beats for "Pai the cost..." are too mellow:

"Long beach to brickcity"
*The beat is nice but i hoped for an harder beat for a redman-snoop collabo.

"Boss playa"
*The beat is good but boring after a few times.

Snoop needs beats like "Let's all roll" from fredwreck, the 2 above are pretty average to me.

Jelly roll is a very talente producers....."Wrong idea"'s beat is amazing, nothing to add.

I was feeling the beat to boss player (aka pimp game), damn it's hypnotic, & I was feeling the beat to lb 2 brick city, the beat reminded me of the last track on eazy-e's album eazy-duz-it. Snoop had good lyrics on it but sould have come off much harder especially with redman on it, and he should of left off snoopy collins and his singing (or nate should do it).

snoop moved on before...and he fucked up...made an ok album and a WACK ass album...its a bad move for him...oh and xzibit and dre together is wack...xzibit wit jinx or e swift is tight....xzibit dont rock dre beats as well as snoop does...xzibit needs to take it back to his old style...rougher beats...less commercialized concepts...snoop just needs to lay off the lame ass pimp persona...dre keeps him grounded and snoop strays from that wack ass shit....Fredwrecks beats do outshine snoop like someone said above...battle cat and snoop tired me out already...i think cat made too many similar beats...and as for meech and jelly roll...i have never really liked them too much...and anything snoop does with timbaland or the neptunes is bunk...he had that lil kim remix with the neptunes too....and didnt one of the bootlegs of Paid Da Cost have a track produced by the Neptunes aside from the one he got now?...cuz that on was kinda weak too

If the album is good,i dont care about dre or not dre on it (even if i still believe dre and snoop are an incredible combo),but i have some feelings about this album....the last (? ? ?) on priority/capitol records, snoop maybe wants to keep his best cuts on lock for his solo debut on mca records.
Who knows ? ? ?
