Title: My short review of the Chronic Re-Lit Walmart exclusive edition
Post by: Soopafly DPGC on September 01, 2009, 10:40:43 AM
Just got the Wal-Mart exclusive of The Chronic re-lit.  First off, the bonus song "Smoke On" by Snoop is awesome, well worth the price of the CD alone.  It's real smooth and samples the old song "Float On".  It's only 2 verses though, but it's that classic young snoop sound from the Chronic era...sounds like it could have easily been a Chronic track.  It doesn't say in the liner notes, but i'm positiive it was produced by Dre.  Sounds like it came right from the Chronic recording sessions.

The Walmart edition is only one disc.  It comes in a normal plastic CD case which I prefer, rather than the cardboard foldout case that the regular Chronic Re-Lit comes in.  There are supposedly 2 bonus songs, one is Smoke On, the other is Necessary Roughness by Rage, which was already released on her CD.  Apparently Levi doesn't know this, as she continues to release Rage tracks as being "unreleased from the vault" when they were already on her album.  Bad news is, all the songs are masked, they don't have any radio versions of the singles on there, which sucks.  The masking is pretty bad and makes songs like "Bitches Ain't Shit" virtually unlistenable.  It's kind of a ripoff too, in that i got the normal version with 7 bonus tracks and extra DVD full of stuff for 9.99 at Best Buy, but then Walmart, I had to pay 11.88 for this one with essentially one bonus track and a single disc.

But in my opinion, the Smoke On bonus track is well worth the money.

Thanks for the review.  Props for your dedication as a fan to buy both versions.  So, in total, how many "unreleased" (whether true or not) songs has WideAwake released?

3 track sampler from a few months back
6 songs available from their web site when submitting to their contest
7 From the Vault songs
2 WalMart songs Smoke On and Nec. Roughness

Any others?

Well, thanks for the being the guinea pig, I'm heading to Best Buy to get my copy then. That would be nice of you to upload that track since most of us will not be buying that version now, due to your review, but if u don't want to it's all good. Good lookin' out though, glad I know which one to get now.

3 track sampler + 6 available from the site for the contest - 3 of them already being available +7 Re-Lit bonus tracks + 2 walmart edition - 1 being released already

comes to a grand total of 14. Not shabby so far, and with Snoop's Lost Sessions supposedly hitting in October and that box set hitting November, it looks like we have a lot in store for us in the future.

Let's also not forget that they gave us the stems for Nuthin But A G Thang for the remix contest.

So far in 6 months WideAwake will have done more for us fans than Death Row did for us in nearly a decade.

To my knowledge, that's it.  They have a Danny Boy song playing on their webpage, but I don't think they have that song available for download.

No problem, I was going to buy both anyway...the way i look at it is that i want to support these guys so we'll get more stuff and I essentially paid 20.00 for 8 new unreleased tracks, a DVD interview with Dre and a bunch of music videos and stuff.  So if that was in a package by itself, i would've bought it.  Plus, I never bought any of the remastered Chronics they released in the past, and my OG copy was sounding pretty bad.  Plus, i've downloaded alot of unreleased Death Row stuff from the bootleggers and stuff the last few years, so it's nice to be able to buy and support this new company.  I'm sure "Smoke On" will pop up on here soon enough.  I'd rather not post it immediately up here, because i want other people to buy the album too, but i can see not wanting to buy both copies, so in a week or so here, if no one has posted the song yet, i'll post it up.

send me the track please. I already own The Chronic and I can't really spend all that just for 1 track. If it had radio versions maybe, cause those are pretty ok. but yeah never I mean I will never pay for a crappy backmask peace of shit, Fuck censorship.

Also:The track, is it also censored? Is it just a track with no cursing? lol

Is ''Smoke On'' explicit or clean also? And if you are planning to upload the track. Could you rip it in the highest bitrate possible?

Guys, read my post...i said if no one's posted it in a week or so, i'll post it up.  I want to give people a chance to buy this, i'm not going to post the song the day it comes out.  Also, it is masked very slightly.  There's only 4 or 5 curse words in the song so it's not too dirty, and they do a lot better masking this song than on the clean Chronic.  Just a very light scratch over each dirty word.  You can hardly tell it's censored.  Unlike the clean Chronic where there are huge drawn out scratches over each dirty word.

I agree you should wait a week before posting the song... but a clip wouldn't hurt  :)

Also, hows the quality of the song? After checking the "From the Vault" bonus CD it's evident NONE of those tracks were professionally mixed or mastered---which is absolutely unacceptable. Seriously how the fuck could they not have someone mixdown these records? Either way I'm sending lara an email and cc'ing everyone in that company. Clearly at this point they just don't have a clue what they're doing. Case in point is that Dogg Pound record "I Rock Mics" and the Kurupt & Snoop "Would you Ride" off the Vault Bonus CD.... those songs are at best in  unpresentable condition and at worst, unlistenable. Completely unacceptable for a major release of this caliber IMO.

I'll be damned if they try to put out an entire album of Snoop stuff without having it mixed or mastered.

It's reversed, but like i said, it's very fast and it's very easy to still make out the word they are censoring.

As far as the quality, i don't know, i don't have an ear for that kind of stuff.  It sounds good to me, i can bump it in my car, it's probably not perfect...it kind of sounds like the same quality of I Roc Mics, but I didn't find that song to be "unlistenable" so I don't know.  I'm sure someone else on this board besides me will buy the Wal Mart version of this.  I'm sure someone will post it up on here, probably by the end of the day if i had to bet on it.

wtf

Maybe they only have a master to the censored version so they figured who not put it out on the WalMart disc.  Think about the possibilities first.  Everybody here needs to stop bitching and be appreciative that we're getting any music released at all.  None of these tracks were meant to be released.  And if Dre still owned Death Row, pleeze believe this stuff would be locked in the vaults FOREVER.  And you can put that one on a bitch and smoke it, because we all know it's true.  :-*

No, nothing like that at all...it's from late 92-93, Snoop sounds real young.  Beat is similar to the Warren G/Cedric Ceballos song - FLow On from the Basketball's Best Kept Secret album.

Reason I asked is because if it's reverse edited, it can pretty easily be REreversed to make it sound like it did originally. You just gotta find the precise section that was reversed which if u know what u are doing, can be done with a little time. If u want me to unedit it for you, u can send it to me on the PM, I won't post it up. If not I'll just do it when it leaks.

mind pming the dirty version then? Honestly worse thing I hate is fucking censorship. I fucking bought TMMLP and the fuckers still back masked the 2 Columbine references in "KIM" Christ it fucks up the song imo.

Also may I also have a clean version 2 the guy that bought it (pm though a link). Even if it is censored its still a new track.  8) Honestly I hope Itunes has the walmart version up later. All I see is the current release and I already got the songs.

yeah that's great, you read the title listed on the walmart page.  Not what I meant.  If you take the time to actually scroll down and check the tracklisting, Disc 2 has the same 7 bonus tracks and Dre interview sold everywhere else....THAT's what I meant.  No mention of the Walmart exclusive "Smoke On"

Increases sales for WideAwake.  Good sales = more projects like this, and more unreleased Death Row stuff released.  If you can't wait a week, just buy it.  It's 11.88, it's not like it costs a fortune!

i doubt that the order would arrive in germany before it leaks...i have no problem to spend 12 bucks for one track even dough i already ordered the regular re-lit and own the chronic OG + the dual disc release. i spent thouand of dollars for 2pac stuff so it`s not about the money. maybe you send the track via pm, thx.

Yeah, but no ones going to rebuy a fucking bullshit version that's been raped by backmask and censorship for 1 track that's also been backmasked and censored. Its bullshit. Honestly the Walmart version wouldn't sell well cause it only has 1 track that's censored. The one that's selling is Dirty version cause it is remastered all the tracks in their good dirtynees (lol?), has way more extra tracks, and it has bonus stuff.

The chances of the walmart selling good are extremly low, only reason a guy would buy it if they want the song bad enough. I mean if I had a choice I'd rebuy the dirty over the clean but hey, you said you'll post it so I'll wait.  all i'm saying is don't expect the clean 2 sell.  8)

Increases sales for WideAwake.  Good sales = more projects like this, and more unreleased Death Row stuff released.  If you can't wait a week, just buy it.  It's 11.88, it's not like it costs a fortune!

yes we must all donate money to wideawake

I'm not going to chastise you for holding out on the song, but doing so is not going to increase sales. The song is on the Wal-Mart version, which you were kind enough to peep for us and tell us all it wasn't worth buying. If anything, you DECREASED the sales because most people that would have bought the Wal-Mart version would've already bought the normal version, and then copped the Wal-Mart version thinking it had the clean versions with changed lyrics on there. Since you told us that wasn't the case, nobody is going to buy the Wal-Mart version unless they were a die hard collector, which in that case they would've bought it no matter if Smoke On leaked and was on allhiphop.com or was unleaked.

Somebody please tell me that my logic makes more sense here.

what idiot would think there is a clean version of the chronic that isn't edited? And not only that, for unreleased songs?

I don't get why people want a clean version anyway. Are people here DJs or something?

A lot of Death Row singles, including the ones from The Chronic, had clean versions where they recorded the song over again with clean lyrics. To a half-ass collector like myself, I would potentially consider buying that version as well if they included those changed versions, but they didn't so I'm not interested. Clean versions are made for a few reasons, one of them being that they can sell to kids and parents can i guess be comfortable that the swear words aren't heard by their kids. Basically to not discriminate against potential customers.

One idea (and I know this is a bitch) is to rip the DVD music videos to MP3 - they're all clean if I recall properly

It's not explicit.  If you listen closely, the curse words are scratched just ever so slightly.  As I said, very easy to make out the curse words.  I think WideAwake tried their hardest to give us this song in the most explicit way possible without actually being 'explicit'.

As a side note, Rage's bonus song "Necessary Roughness" is censored, but they make the curse words silent instead of back masking it.  They also miss an edit in the first verse and you can clearly hear her say "shit".

The masking as a whole on the chronic CD is really strange.  They miss a couple curse words, they edit "chronic", yet it's written all over the CD.  On the back of the clean version of the CD, the song is titled "Bitches Ain't S***", Whereas on the dirty version, it's titled (B****** Ain't S***"), so it's less censored than the dirty version lol.  Sometimes they edit "ass", "nuts", "endo", etc. and on some songs they don't.

If you don't want to hear swear words, you shouldn't be listening to the Chronic. Hell, the name of the album itself tells you that.

The singles that have clean versions are called radio edits. Those are so djs can play the song on the radio and not get sued. Its not the same as the edited version of albums that you buy on stores, where they censor the words. There's zero point in buying those versions for an album that celebrates cussing, sex, killing, and living the gangsta lifestyle, because it distorts the music into something that's basically unlistenable. I'm not the one who's stupid, because I'm not the one collecting music not worth listening to.
