Title: Kurupt - "Space Boogie" is an underrated NEAR CLASSIC...
Post by: Sccit on October 19, 2009, 02:41:06 PM
I remember when this album first came out... Kurupt was 2 years removed from droppin a classic in "Tha Streetz iz a Mutha" and fresh off the "Up In Smoke Tour". The anticipation for "Space Boogie" was crazy.. Kurupt was even expected by many to take over the west with this album. When the album finally dropped, most heads weren't too pleased with Kurupts effort, claiming he fell off lyrically and that he album was a disappointment overall.......Now, 8 years later, can anyone say this album isn't bangin, front to back? Even the commercialized cuts sound hard compared to the commercialized songs we get nowadays. Honestly, this album was wayyyy under appreciated when it dropped and I hope heads are starting to see the value in it nowadays, cuz it may very well be considered a classic given some time 8)...PeACe

LMAO @ near classic, there are def some bangers on that shit like "bring back that g shit" "hardest" "on onsite" "just dont give a fuck" "at it again"

but calling it near classic is a joke

It was a very dope album, I think it just paled big time compared to Tha Streetz.

I disagree...the whole album flows together very well and u got that authentic DPG sound all the way through. All those tracks u named are hard as fuck, but u didnt even mention classic tracks like "Space Boogie", "On The Grind", "Gangstas", "Can't Go Wrong"...the album is extremely underrated, i think u should give it another spin, my dude...PeACe

I still give it spins on a regular basis.

The fact that it's being spoken of 8 years later should give it some consideration at being a classic not to mention the sick ass cuts the album had from beginning to end. Space Boogie, OnSite, Cant Go Wrong! The album is defenately classic worthy.

Yeah that's a good way of putting it, the production on this album was GREAT, better than Tha Streetz IMO, Kurupt's verses just weren't as solid.

Fredwreck on thus was the nuts. His production carried the album. Hardest Muthafuckas, Bring Back That G Shit, Space Boogie and a few more tracks on here were dope. But it feels like a half arsed effort to me. Kurupt was starting to lose it lyrically.

Kurupt's redundant lyrics about "gangsta shit" and telling bitches to "eat dicks" were the downfall of this album.

I like Kuruption! & Streetz much better.

+1

Space Boogie was alright, but nothing really stood out and is classic to me or makes me even really want to put it on.  I'll listen to We Can Freak It and C-Walk from Kuruption 100 times before I'd even think about playing anything from Space Boogie.

Fredwreck is always droppin heat however for some reason for this album he fucking mudered it! Space boogie, onsite, the hardest muthafuckas all dope not to mention soopaflys cut. He'll even Jon B produced a heater. Minus the it's over track great song selection great beats great flow dope classic album.

The Fredwreck produced tracks and a couple of others are straight bangers. The rest is sadly average or horrible.  At best this album is a 3.5/5

If you could take the most lyrical tracks from Kuruption, the theme from Tha Streetz (DPGC guests, etc) and the production from Space Boogie and put it all together, you would have what most would want from Kurupt. Even though I consider Tha Streetz a personal classic, musically Space Boogie was on some other shit. Futuristic west coast shit.

Hate On Me with Soopafly was the best track on the whole album....Can't Go Wrong w/ DJ Quik was good as well.  Still, wasn't as good as Streetz but I don't think any Kurupt album will ever be as good as that album, having the whole DPGC on there was something that won't be repeated this day and age.

as an album it was a total mess.

it still has some nice songs though which saves it. it also has its over and some straight garbage, some bad guestspots, and no cohesiveness..

^how was it a total mess as an album? it had a theme and the theme stuck all the way through. you may say it's not your style, but calling it a total mess is off. there's nothing inconsistent about this near classic...PeACe

Great album, but there was a few real weak cuts on it like "It's Over", that shit was garbage. "Space Boogie" is still one of my favorite albums from Kurupt though. Actually, i'm gonna bump this album right now. I'd like to see a new Kurupt album that's mostly produced by Fredwreck. "On, Onsite" is one of Fred's best beats.
Title: Re: Kurupt - "Space Boogie" is an underrated NEAR CLASSIC...
Post by: D-Nice on October 20, 2009, 11:30:19 AM
Lyrically it does slip a bit. For every The Hardest or On Site, you have a It's Over or The World. The song with Everlast was all over the place too lyrically as well to me. The concepts were there, just not executed the best at times.
Title: Re: Kurupt - "Space Boogie" is an underrated NEAR CLASSIC...
Post by: Paul on October 20, 2009, 11:31:40 AM
It definitly stuck to the Futuristic G Funk, very similar style in production and it flows well

There a couple of tracks it could do with out

That was my favourite period from the dogg pound, D&G, RAW and Space Boogie

Yeah me too, that's one of my top 5 Soopafly songs of all time.  Both of them come at the hoes so hard on that one it's incredible.  They don't make rap like that anymore.

Great album, but there was a few real weak cuts on it like "It's Over", that shit was garbage...

That was the problem IMO..."It's Over" was the lead single, and the reason alot of heads skipped over this album....When I first heard that joint, I was like, "what the fuck?!"..lol...but the rest of the album was dope!

I definitely agree with the original poster.

It's a 3.5/5 to 4/5

That's a Strong Banger/Near Classic.

Giving this a listen again... I liked it but not as much as Streets.

I actually liked that "It's Over" track.  Cool upbeat track and Natina sounds nice on it and bitch is fine!!!

The track "Space Boogie" was a banger.  Remember I played the fuck out of that song when I bought this album.

I'll drop thoughts again here later after I give it a listen again.  Been awhile since I've bumped this one.

When the album dropped, there were 3 different collector versions that came out, as well..the three collector versions each had differnt bonus tracks. One version had "Bitches" with Butch Cassidy, one had "Have Fun" with Tha Liks, and one had "The Life I Lead"...........all three bonus tracks are pretty tight.

Nothing funny about that...I personally think the production on this album can easily compare to the production on "Tha Streetz"...lyrically, "Tha Streetz" takes the cake, but "Space Boogie" had top-notch production and i can see why someone would prefer the "Space Boogie" sound over that of "Tha Streetz"...PeACe

It all depends on what kind of sound you're into. Tha Streetz had great production, don't get me wrong, but I just love the bass guitar and other futuristic sounds on SB.
