personally, i thought Escape Route was better than Padded Room.

deeper, more emotional songs; that were fucking amazing.

agreed one way or another Budden had the album of the year. 8)

to each, his own.

but Budden is the obvious MVP of 2009; two top albums of the year & apart of the Slaughterhouse album. 8)

Wow you guys are talking like you are serious....

Come on now this is serious stan-age if you think this for real.

In a year where we had two amazing Cunninlynguists albums, A Wu revival to boot (with more to come next year), 50, Em and Jay Z (none of which I dug but I rate over the two options you provided), Even Rakim and Royce' respective albums were better than this despite disappointing me for various reasons.

So come now guys I want a real answer for album of the year as opposed to these two which were no where near it.
Title: Re: so the album of the year is...
Post by: Chamillitary Click on November 27, 2009, 10:42:41 PM
^Rakim & Rae dropped mad good albums.

but lets be real, there was nothing extremely special with either album; both were just really good & they both showed old dogs can still run with the youngin's.

not to even get into how everybody goes "MOTHERFUCKING CLASSIC, I TELL YOU!" just because of who they are; it's a joke in itself.

Royce's album was amazing too; had some filler though & i wasn't feeling how like seven of the songs were 2 months old & two of those seven are like 2 years old lol.

if you're not a fan of Joe Budden, i don't expect you to agree, but for those who understand & feel his music; you're almost obligated to agree.

dude is just on another level; on a realer level than these old guys still talking about pulling triggers in the hood.

Rakim - The Seventh Seal
Joe Budden - Padded Room
KiD CuDi - Man On The Moon
Eminem - Relapse

I co-sign this post.

Street Hop is up there too though.."Street Hop 2010" is the only song I'm not feeling that much. That album had more variety than Buddens albums. If "For You" would've been on Royce's album instead of SH2010 & "Taxi Driver" instead of "Bad Boy" it probably would've been my favorite album of the year.

2. Marco Polo & Torae - Double Barrel
3. Skyzoo - The Salvation
4. Blaq Poet - The Blaqprint
5. Cormega - Born & Raised
6. KRS-One & Buckshot - Survival Skills
7. Eminem - Relapse
8. Method Man & Redman - Blackout 2
9. Masta Ace & Edo G - Arts & Entertainment
10. U-God - Dopium

I wanted to put Large Professor - The LP on there but it's not really new so I didn't.

my favorite album of the year is definitely OB4CLII... most plays on my iPod and I just enjoyed that album the most, too many classics and bangers throughout the album which many other releases this year lacked, standout tracks  8)

but my top albums this year so far are basically whatever ones I actually bought, in no order:

Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II
Ghostface Killah - Ghostdini Wizard of Poetry
Method Man & Redman - Blackout II
Slaughterhouse - Slaughterhouse
Kid Cudi - Man On The Moon: End of Day
DJ Quik & Kurupt - BlaQKout
The Jacka - Tear Gas (most slept on album this year especially by this section)
Yukmouth - The West Coast Don
Maino - If Tomorrow Comes
UGK - UGK 4 Life
50 Cent - Before I Self Destruct

and I have a feeling B.G.'s album will make my list, Slim Thug, Rick Ross, Warren G, Mack 10, Budden, M.O.P., Wale all dropped dope albums too but I didn't get around to copping them.... 2009 has been a good year

I think you missed my point.

1. No hiphop fan outside the Joe Budden supporter clique will ever name a Budden-album "album of the year". Canibus-fans started this trend.
2. A thread called "Album of the year" where the first post only names 2 Joe Budden albums, will never turn into anything other than a "Joe Budden is dope or wack" discussion.

a lot of dope albums did drop this year but after my first or second listen on Rae's shit I was already convinced  8)

I forgot to mention Jadakiss and Cam dropped pretty good albums too, even though I didn't get around to copping either, and even Relapse had highlights

I thought Jada's was extremely average and I STILL haven't made it all the way through Cam - I'm a big Cam fan and will still do this. But the songs I did hear seemed kinda' below standard to me. That new Snoop is pretty average. Waiting on a (grouprip) Clipse and BG too. Gotta bump Juvenile too but I heard average things.

Jadakiss had way too many features and some that weren't even necessary, where as Cam had no real weak tracks but also lacked bangin' standout tracks

what both albums had in common though was that neither lived up the the hype musically that surrounded them, Jada's being because it took so long and Cam's since it was supposed to be his "comeback" album without Dipset

i like the love Relapse is getting but it just doesn't fit into the conversation.

i'm as big of an Em fan as anybody & i let shit slid just because he's that dude; but i can't lie to myself & say it was album of the year.

all i can say is that i enjoyed it & those bonus tracks open some light & hope for a better Relapse 2. 8)

for the record though, Xzibit444 made this thread & said "so the album of the year is...Padded Room & Escape Route. just sayin'".

it was more of a statement than a question for the rest of you. :P

^^ if anything budden fans are more cult like.  and i dont mean cult as in cult following, i mean budden is the leader and most of his fans are the followers.  budden can do no wrong or put out a wack song/album.  he is like god to some of you people.

and of course tech has online fans.  if youre the #1 independent you pretty much have to have online fans.  the only difference is that tech is known outside of the internet through word of mouth and shit load of touring.

i'm not saying Tech has no online fans; just Budden has more.

think about rap today, what are all the wack songs put out that get hate? basically just mainstream, autotuned, sell-out shit.

if a rapper you like and anticiapated dropped an album, chances are you're naturally going to like it.

anyway, if you look through old posts of mine (not telling you to) i have at least 25-30 posts shitting on Joe Budden, just like the rest of you.

then i actually took the time out to bump his music & here i stand today. 8)

believe it or not i gave budden many chances.  he just doesnt appeal to me at all and i dont get the fascination around him. to me, his voice is annoying and i could care less about what he is rapping about.  sure, some verses annoy me less than others...but overall i still think he is straight ass (especially when rapping alongside the likes of joel ortiz, crooked i, and royce).

given that's my perspective of his music, why is everyone so astonished when i say i think he dropped the best music this year? not in a biased sense, but just liking his music; you clearly don't like his music so i wouldn't expect you to say anything positive.

Kid Cudi- The more I listen to the album the better it gets.  He's not the dopest lyricist or anything like that but the songs on the album really told a story.  I found it very refreshing with all the guns and rims raps getting played.  That said I have not heard the Clipse album yet!

As of today my top ten list is looking like,

1. Reks More Grey Hairs
2. Slaughterhouse Self-titled
3. P.O.S Never Better
4. Kid Cudi End of the Day: Man on the Moon
5. Ebony Bones Bone of My Bones

As of today my top ten list is looking like,

1. Reks More Grey Hairs
2. Slaughterhouse Self-titled
3. P.O.S Never Better
4. Kid Cudi End of the Day: Man on the Moon
5. Ebony Bones Bone of My Bones
6. 50 Cent Before I Self Destruct
7. Joe Budden Escape Route
8. Charles Hamilton This Perfect Life
9. Stat Quo The Great Depression

i highly respect the Reks mention; completely forgot about him, shit was ridiculously tight.

i thought Grey Hairs was album of the year last year; but i thought More Grey Hairs was a step down from his last album.

question. i agree, that Escape Route is better than Padded Room, but i can't say by much; i mean similar music, it doesn't make the top 10? :P

Why does everyone rate Padded Room sooooo high? Personally Escape Route/ Slaughterhouse/ Halfway House >>> Padded Room, PR had too many wack hooks and beats it sounded more like a mixtape than a album

Padded Room sounded more like a mixtape than a album

I agree with this, but I still thought it had some great tracks... if the mastering were to be re-done professionally I would cop it

it had some classic joints on it; i can tell what you mean though.

i think Halfway House had a few filler-ish tracks on it; where Padded Room was more of an album in my mind.

some beats were weak, but some of the beats on Slaughterhouse were similar sounding; they even sampled one of Budden's beats. :P

but i thought Escape Route was better too; but not by much.

It makes sense that you think More Grey Hairs was a step down from Grey Hairs.  The album is the leftover tracks from the recording sessions for Grey Hairs.  I hadn't heard of kid until last year but damn man has he been on constant spin since I discovered his music.

Padded Room?  I like it.  It deserves to make my honourable mention list.  It has a bunch of solid cuts (if i gotta go, in my sleep, exxess, future, pray for me)  For some reason I don't bump it too much.   You see that's the conundrum with the honorable mention list.  The albums I listed could easily be argued as better than the ones I have on my top ten.  Just for some reason I don't find myself going back to them as much as I do the ones on my top ten.

I don't want to make this too Budden centric but I high expectations for The Great Escape.

Also, my top ten aside from the top 2 easily change positions.   Some days Budden slides up to 3, some days 50 is last.  They all get constant play though so...which is what matters for my top ten.  My top ten aren't technically the best albums but they stand for something.  Clearly, Slaughterhouse albums suffers from weak beats but the fact the album exists and is that dope means that much more to me.   You can feel the energy when you hear em spit, when they drop off freestyles, when they go on the radio, when they do live shows.  It's so much love for hip-hop and the album reflects that too.

Escape route is my album of the year.I just always go back to it and listen to it.I can listen to it start to finish without skipping a track and I feel emotionally invested in the album.

Padded room was a huge dissapointment to me.I only liked about half the songs,it felt like two albums were recorded and merged into one.It didnt have a feel of an album, just a random assortment of songs thrown together. And I didnt even like half the songs.

Wales album Ive really been enjoying but Ill give it some more time and let it sink in.

Biggest dissapointment of the year has to be kid cudi. That album was a pile of mediocrity gift wrapped as something original.Which in no way was.It should have just been called 808s and heartbreaks part two starring kid cudi.

I've listened to both Only Built for Cuban Linx Part 1 and Part 2.  Each time I either get bored or I'm not all that impressed by his drug tales.   I mean Rae can clearly rap so I don't know what it is.   I liked his Blaqroq track Don't Sniff the Fucking Flowers.   Another thing that bothers me is the hype and rave he gets as if he's holding down the album himself - both albums have a huge numbers of guest features.   Seriously, it's basically a duo between him and ghostface.  I mean can easily over look that because really that's not a real issue. Whatever it is I'm not feeling.  Maybe it's the extreme ego from most Wu members I can't stand.  I keep trying to like Part 2 but I can't.  I fall asleep to it.

I love CREAM.

I checked out this album this week. Its fire. The production is extremely dope and consistent throughout. And both emcees have the perfect chemistry together. Shits on any other duo album released this year. This is what an east coast album should sound like.
