Title: Canibus' Rip the Jacker is easily one of the greatest rap albums ever made
Post by: Detox Iz Not Active on January 10, 2010, 12:57:01 PM
Lyrically is 10/10 and the beats are 10/10

I know most of you listen to Jeezy and Wayne and think that's real hip hop, and for that I feel sorry for you

It's a good album, i'd say a 7.5/10, and i'm a big Canibus fan. I've kinda lost touch with him the last 3-4 years though,

Rip The Jacker isnt even one of Canibus best albums.  For all this talk about how major labels fuck over rap artists I always thought that his 2 albums on Univeral-- Can-I-Bus and 2000BC were easily his best albums and his best songs are found there.

Name me any tracks on Rip The Jacker that can fuck with...

"2nd Round Knockout"
"Horsemen"- the first Horsemen track that appeared on 2000BC Bis spits his hardest shit and Kurupt and Rass come off great as well
"Doomsday"-I think it was around track 11 on 2,000BC, great beat for Canibus to flow over
"I Honor U"- this was a real song, not just Bis droppin battle rhymes
"Lets Ride"-track 11 on Can-I-Bus, again beat is sick, track is similar to "Doomsday"
"Can-I-Bus"- drops one of the sickest lines ever spit in rap "Whenever the head is severed from the human body with a sharp enough weapon the brain remains conscious for 12 seconds long enough for me to give you one last message and when you get to hell you can tell Lucifer I sent it"
"Mic-Nif-icent"- this was his first single and video off the 2000 BC album, the last verse is incredible when he shouts out all the clubs hes performed at, the lyrics on this whole track are totally off the meter

I enjoyed from whom the beat tolls - one ought to not think is my favourite joint from him.  I respect his craft but his vocals and his attitude on the mic get annoying after a while.

Mind Control is easily the best song that Bis has ever done.  It's funny because that is probably his least lyrical track but it's definitely his best track ever.  Perfect beat and hook and Canibus tells an amazing story, I can actually vision him on the plane, w/ the seat reclined and headphones on, ignoring the broad next to him that is talking his head off lol.  Incredible song.

[Verse One]
Yo, scientists gather in a secret place to debate
They photographed the Earth from space and saw my face
They tried to translate the innate asiatic shape
before the final earthquakes came but it was too late
Only one eighth of the human race escaped to space
They were chased by flying phenomenon to the lunar base
Floatillas and space centers, lasers probed the entrance
DNA code sensors reject old genetics
I presented my cosmic clearance to a patrol of medics
I was injected with sodium pentathol and questioned
I relayed the message the way I was trained to remember it
I showed them the keypad code and told 'em to enter it
I told 'em which alphanumeric buttons were sensitive
He snatched it outta my hand and started depressing it
I told him detonation was definite if he kept at it
He never quit, he just lost his temper and flipped
I bowed my head like "I guess this is it"
My ears popped, the music stopped, and I couldn't hear shit

[Hook]

[Verse Two]
The driver jogged around to the front and opened the door
He said his name was Muhammed Jamal and he'd be with me 'till fall
He said the escort service had called
and a package would be waitin for me at the window
I said thanks, he grabbed my bags fast and put 'em in the trunk
Then he ran around to the front, slammed it in gear
Pulled off slow, winding down his window
and asked me if I minded if he smoke, I said no, he drove off
Cut my cell phone off, then I swallowed a tablet of Zoloft
Went to sleep and woke up feelin' kinda lost
I asked him what the weather's been like lately
he said he doesn't mind the heat and hates the A/C
Said he had a son who was eighteen and made beats
and I happened to be his favorite emcee
I said for real, that's crazy, I meet him later
Yo Jamal could you please do me a favor
When we get to the corner stop at the bodega
Hopped out the car, walked inside
the store's stereo was playin' Feliz Navidad
I got a pack of condoms and walked to the back of the line
There was three Taliban that was talkin' very loud
One reached in his back side and pulled out a Beretta gun
The last word I heard myself say was a four letter one
He looked me in the eye and said the drama's never done
Cuz there's no return...no return

[Hook]

[Verse Three]
I heard the ringtone of the red phone
Headquarters informed us there was an explosion in the red zone
We were ordered to get ready to go
and to get into our bio-weapons protective gear and clothes
I rode shotgun, my partner Ramirez drove
GPS control gave us coordinates where to go
Soon as we got there I could feel the hot air
For a second I stopped and stared, there was cops everywhere
I told 'em we need to get a square perimeter clear
We got an hour 'till nightfall, so light some flares
I said a twenty second prayer then ran to the second chair-
the lift that was there, then I waved my hands up in the air
to signal that it was clear before I ran upstairs
I could barely see, smoke was so thick in the air
I was visually impaired and started to get scared
I heard a woman scream "HELP" but I didn't know where
I started screamin' back "I'm not gonna leave you here"
Sayin to myself "damn it's hard to breathe in here"
Searched the rooms one by one like "fuck my lungs"
Ramirez said the fire truck got stuck by the front
I crawled all the way through the foyer to the end of the hallway
and seen her on the floor next to the doorway
I was half unconscious but I just ignored the pain
Helped her to her feet and she had her arm in a brace
All this tar-like black stuff was all in her face
I radio Ramirez coughin and tried to explain
I heard him say something to me like "It's all in flames!"
There was ceiling debris fallin all over the place
I looked her in her eye, she looked into mine, it was strange
Then I blinked for the last time and never saw her again

I gotta agree with Infinite...this isn't even one of Canibus best albums.

The lyrics are tight for the most part, but dude can't make a song...the execution is all wrong.

A dig a few tracks though

No Return gives me chills everytime i listen to it,

No Return is on another level in hip hop

The part that always stood out for me on this track was

I got a pack of condoms and walked to the back of the line
There was three Taliban that was talkin' very loud
One reached in his back side and pulled out a Beretta gun
The last word I heard myself say was a four letter one

now i always assumed that the four letter word was fuck or shit but its not its actually "evil." The whole track is a play on the old saying of "hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil. " Each of the three verses relates to a different type of evil.

Hear no evil

I told him detonation was definite if he kept at it
He never quit, he just lost his temper and flipped
I bowed my head like "I guess this is it"
My ears popped, the music stopped, and I couldn't hear shit

speak no evil

I got a pack of condoms and walked to the back of the line
There was three Taliban that was talkin' very loud
One reached in his back side and pulled out a Beretta gun
The last word I heard myself say was a four letter one

see no evil

I radio Ramirez coughin and tried to explain
I heard him say something to me like "It's all in flames!"
There was ceiling debris fallin all over the place
I looked her in her eye, she looked into mine, it was strange
Then I blinked for the last time and never saw her again

This is part of the reason why canibus is so dope, lyrically there arent many up there with him. Even when he presents simple tracks they have hidden meanings.

Without doubt rip the jacker is an underground classic

I own Rip The Jacker....I enjoyed it.

BUT.....I wouldn't even put it in my top 100 favourite hip-hop albums nevermind as one of the best of all time!

That's a pretty bold statement. There are 100 other hiphop albums you know of or own that are better than RTJ?

Thats what I said bitch! In all seriousness, maybe not 100, but it DEFINITELY DEFINITELY wouldnt be in my top 50. Seriously. Canibus is a great emcee but for me a lot of his songs are samey and follow the same concepts. He made a great choice in getting Stoupe on the beats for that album because what has let him down in the past before that was weak production.

Still, even Stoupe's beats weren't ALL great on Rip The Jacker.
