Actor flies in cult members who plan to stay and build a church ::)
When John Travolta, not just an actor but a certified Boeing 707 pilot, flew his own plane into Haiti last month, it wasn't only carrying aid. As well as six tons of food, medical supplies and nappies, Travolta also ferried a cargo of Scientologists who now plan to stay on in Haiti beyond the immediate relief operation. They have already set up an orphanage and plan to build a church.
Hundreds of Scientologists - a group of ministers, doctors and general volunteers - arrived in Haiti to help with the rescue effort soon after the 7.0 earthquake struck on January 12. However the spotlight only fell on the church's work two weeks later when Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston - two of Scientology's most famous believers along with Tom Cruise - landed at Port-au-Prince airport.
In their yellow shirts, bearing the slogan 'Something CAN be done about it', the Scientologists have been a visible part of the Haiti relief effort. Their operation, the 'Volunteer Ministry Disaster Relief for Haiti', includes more than 100 doctors as well as other volunteers who distribute food and water. They now plan to establish a permanent base in a country which already has its fair share of belief systems from voodoo to Catholicism and Rastafarianism.
Critics of the cult have been dismissive of the kind of help the Scientologists are giving injured Haitians. Known as the 'assist' method, treatment might involve lightly touching parts of the body (above) or asking a patient to stare at a wall. The technique was developed by L Ron Hubbard, the science fiction writer who founded the church in 1954.
But Pat Harney, a Scientology spokeswoman in Haiti, claimed the church's 'assist' treatments are valid. "A person can be hurting and medical assistance does not work," she said. "We help people to locate themselves."
A spokeswoman for the International Medical Corps, a charity working at Port-au-Prince's main hospital, acknowledged that the Scientologists had been useful when "every available hand" was needed. But she added: "My understanding is they are missionaries, not medical personnel."
