ive really only heard 1 or 2 songs with drake on it, i try to avoid the radio and tv music as much as possible. all i know is he sings a line in his song that goes something like "ive got shit on lock at the mall" which is funny as fuck to me. clearly marketed to 13 yr old girls

Heres my thing. Yeah ive been into hip hop....really since the Fresh Prince was still makin tapes (yeah, tapes lol). I remember the first tape I ever bought was Fresh Prince's "Rock The House". So Ive watched the shit progress through the years. And for me, its pretty sickening. Im not gonna say that there isnt any good rap music anymore...cus thats just some shit bitter old school people say about new music. But for me, I listen to the content a lot. Im focusin on the rapper themselves. The beat is the beat and you can throw damn near any garbage rapper on a hot beat and make a hit. But the average rap fan nowadays doesnt seperate the two. When a hot new single hits the radio...and the beat is smashin...the average rap fan doesnt know enough about rap MUSIC to say...."yeah the beat is off the chain...but the rapper sucks". They just say..."I love that new Lil Wayne song, he's an amazing rapper" lol. Its because the fan base has changed over the years. The rappers/music will reflect the fan base. So when 13 yr old girls are your number 1 buyers...you make music that appeals to them. 13 yr old girls dont give a shit if you are actually a good rapper. Only if there is a catchy hook and they can shake their lil asses to the beat.
The reason I say its gotten bad nowadays is because at one point, rap had to appeal to actual RAP fans. People who were actually INTO rap music. The bar was higher for the rappers then. Eventually it started crossing over and mixing with R&B and Pop music. Good for the rappers paydays. But it meant that you were now dilluting the rap fan base with R&B and Pop fans. The bar lowered for the rappers themselves. Think about it. Now more then ever, it seems like knowledgeable rap fans understand that the best RAPPERS...arent even the ones making all the money and all over the TV. The marketable ones are. Thats a damn shame...

this i agree with...yes he's obviously aiming at a specific audience (teen girls lol) but at the same time when you compare him to some of the other more recent commercial rappers to break through (y'all know who im talking about), hes got a lot more to offer...
he also seems to switch quite comfortably between "commercial" and "underground" shit...for example, he'll do some Young Money shit, then turn round and drop "My New" featuring Von P from Tanya Morgan, and Phonte from Little Brother, produced by Nottz, or "Think Good Thoughts" with Elzhi and Phonte and production by 9th Wonder, and is quite vocal in his opinion on the less commercial artists/groups who have influenced him and he listens to, so from that respect i gotta give it to him, he kinda caters to both audiences at times
but maybe if he did more of that kinda shit i'd be more open to the idea of actually listening to his other shit...at the moment im not convinced 8)

it's just the fans pay combined millions of dollars for this new generation of Hip Hop & they aren't even interested in things that "real rappers" put out.

Yeah but you gotta see where I'm coming from. He's been on TV here as a the clean cut athlete on a highschool drama, he was always around in the malls and community centers. He was younger than me so we never really hung out, and he was from a much higher end white neighborhood so he wouldn't come down to my area too often. But he was never the guy he's acting like now and I can't buy him in that role at all. Most rappers are acts but when you have seen the real person for so many years it's hard to buy into the facade.
For me it's like I grew up in the same part of New York as Alfonso Ribeiro and after finishing with Silver Spoons instead of going on to play Carlton Banks he decided to jump on the growing hip hop movement and started talking like Big Daddy Kane and Rakim. I just couldn't take him seriously.
I remember seeing Drake downtown at Dundas Square the summer of 08 or 07, just before he started releasing music, and he was all thugged out taking gangsta pics with some photographer. He wasn't famous as Drake yet and no one would have recognized him from the show the way he was dressed, and it was 1AM and not many people were outside anyway. He was walking around talking like Jay Z. We saw each other and he nodded recognizing me from the ball tournaments and shit (I was always the only white guy that dressed and talked like a white guy at these things so I was easy to notice), but I just looked back like what's wrong with this guy. Then he took off in his Pontiac Grand Am and the next time I saw him he was Drake on TV all big and bad.
Do I wish I spent more time with the kid when he was a nobody begging for acceptance on the street? Absolutely. But will I ever take his gimmick seriously? No.

yo fuck the bullshit..i hated him at first..the few things i heard were trash..but then i saw he had a track produced by khalil, and that shit went hard...so i gave a chance to a mixtape or 2 and i was like damn..this muthafucka really got it when he wants...for every wack track, theres a dope one somewhere in his catalogue...im down with drake...mtl to t.dot ;D
