we are the world comment is pretty funny but i dig it.  nothing wrong with hip-hop promoting motivation instead of negative tendencies.  i'd rather they'd try to change the world instead of creating pathetic excuses as to why the world sucks

Sick shit! Finally no jokey single, this one got a nice "uplifting" vibe as his manager said, especially on the chorus (like it). And to everybody that was worrying about Boi 1-Da, imo he did great. Can't wait for Recovery!

This is pretty good. It's very different from what he always had as a first single. He did a lot of singing on it but the only part that was kinda annoying was the bridge between the hook and the 3rd verse. Hook was aight. His raps and lyrics are top notch as always. Beat could be better.

I like the track, and I like that after 5 studio albums, Em is finally ready to drop the gimmicky first single that had kind of become a tradition for him.  I think that decision will please hardcore Eminem fans, although I'm not sure how the more casual fans will react to it.  Personally, I think it's the right direction for him to be moving.  I actually wasn't a big detractor of "Relapse."  However, one of my criticisms of it was that "We Made You," seemed too jokey to really fit the tone of the rest of the album.  It seemed like, in that case Eminem felt the need to put the "obligatory" gimmick single on there, even though it didn't really jibe with the rest of the album.  With this song though, I don't get that sense at all.
That line on here about "Relapse" was interesting too.  It seems as though Eminem is his own worst critic.  But I definitely prefer that to him acting like "Relapse" was a perfect album.  And the absence of the now infamous "accent" makes me think he is making a conscious effort to listen to his fans.
Overall, I'm happy with the way this track turned out.  I can't say Em knocked this one out of the park.  But I would consider this a big step in the right direction.  I liked the chorus.  The beat was nice.  And Eminem's lyrics were straight forward and to the point, rather than relying on accents or jokes about celebrities and pop culture.  I hope the rest of the album follows suit.

He means it was bad because of his rapping and the accent in particular.

As for this song, mid way through first listen I wanted to hate, but it's growing on me. I just wish he only did the rapping. I don't need to hear Em sing the chorus or the bridge. Mid range Don't Cry Axl Rose would have been great doing the singing on this track and wit the content it would mean something too.

this is fucking ill. 8)

doesn't really fit the formula, but he's Eminem, it won't affect sales.

the hook is very un-Eminem like; not his vibe, but he pulls it off.

the whole singing part before his last verse is "whatever", it's not very good though.

the beat is good, no complaints, but like someone else said, it does feel like it's missing something.

You didn't think it sounded a lot more poppy than the tone of the rest of "Relapse," ?  I have to say I thought the same thing about "Crack a Bottle," which is a shame because it was one of the few accent-free tracks on the album.  But to me those two songs, while okay as stand alone songs, seem oddly out of place within the context of the album.

I don't see how anyone can call this pop. This beat is simple but decent. Reading the comments, I expected a poppy ass hook - sure he sings the chorus but it's not cheesy or poppy. The singing before the 3rd verse was a bit unnecessary but this joint is pretty fucking hot  8)

VERY different than Em's typical 1st singles.

Least he knows the accent was stupid and Relapse was eyy lol

Personally, I would say his past first singles have been much closer to being "Pop" than this.  In fact, I think in the grand scheme of things, going with a more conventional single might prove to be a risky move, sales-wise.  I think this single will please the more avid Eminem fans.  But in the past, Eminem's first singles with all of their references to pop culture, have kind of been the "hook" that has drawn in the more casual fans.  Personally, I really like this new single.  I'm just not sure it will have the same cross-over appeal with the casual rap fans.  But I guess time will tell.

WORD!   Exactly.  I am very happy Eminem said this.  I'll always love Eminem for what he accomplished from 98-2003, but this restores my faith in the abilities of the new Eminem.  And this song is more what we expect from him.

12 years after being signed by Dre Eminem is back and still doing it!!!!

I wish people would quit complaining about Eminem's lead singles to his albums... Because most were excellent, and paved the way for his music reaching a broader audience which people can't fake like that isn't important on so many levels.

"My Name Is"- 10 out of 10
"Real Slim Shady"- 10 out of 10
"Purple Pills"- 8 out of 10
"Without Me"- 6 out 10
"Lose Yourself" 10BILLION out of 10
"My Band"- 4 out of 10
"Just Lose It" 1 out of 10
"We Made You" 1 out of 10
"Not Afraid"- 7 out of 10

...So most of his first singles you have to admit were great songs.  And the ones that weren't still served the purpose of helping him reach a broader audience and kept him from becoming a bitter and disgruntled battle rapper like Canibus, or great lyricist like Ras Kass who most people have never heard of.

Good to hear Em using his normal voice again and spitting some worthwhile lyrics.  However, the beat is very mediocre and the hook/bridge is just alright.

But for real, why can't Em spit some relevant shit with Dre's team overseeing production duties?  This beat is so underwhelming and disappointing yet he wants to make music that is more timeless.  This ain't the one.

That's not turning his back on his music.  It's just turning his back on that one shitty ass album that people only liked because Em is such a musical genius that even his shittiest work still has some quality to it.

After giving it a couple more spins I think that the best word to describe it would be "safe". It's a safe single, he's not sayin much, he's not doing accents, he's not spittin but he's giving us a more mature Em under a decent beat. I dig it but I expect a lot more from the album.

I really liked "Relapse" too.  In a way, I think Em is caving in to the fan response on this one.  Don't get me wrong, I think it's good that he listens to feedback from his fans.  But he could have lost the accent for this album and still stood by the creative decision to use it on "Relapse."

The chorus sounds like something Nelly woulda done when he was fucking with country music.

There are a lot of positives though that he's actually rapping at a high standard and that he feels the accent thing was shit.

I guess if u like drake etc maybe ud really rate this. These anthem choruses made for stadiums

This is nice. Im glad eminem went more the route of loose yourself in terms of first singles than the comedy poppy bullshit. Yeh the beats abit simple  but i think it fits the concept and i like the hook. Only thing about the song which is terrible is his attempt at the bridge...sounds funny lol, but i like it. I can see this being big in todays world...like long beach said, its like an MTV song in its cliche way but its good and a fresh move.

Also it could be a sign of this album...im glad he admitted relapse was garbage and i think he is going back to basics on this album and hopefully making some nice joints again!

Solid start to the album without doubt! First time in such a long time i aint trashed the first single of an eminem album...and the beat fits eminem i think. This will help eminem sell like usual and keep him interesting to the public. Good start to the album!

Still not fucking with the j.cole single though  ;D

Nah, man, I'm sure it's the same beat.   It's just mastered where as budden's isn't.

Quote
Ok here's the whole story:

Versatile & I made this beat in Jan of 2007 for Fabolous. We got a call about a sample that couldn't get clear for a song Fab was doing with Neyo called "Make Me Better". They (Def Jam) were looking for a new beat for the song so of course Vers and i had to take advantage of that. So that night we made a real dope beat and later met up with Fab at Sony Studios to play it for him. He liked the track but wasn't in love with it, he told us to keep the drums but make some changes and bring it back to him the next day. Vers and I went back to jersey and didn't sleep. We made another a better beat that night and we knew that this one was a winner! We knew once Fab heard it he's gonna go crazy for it. The next morning we went up to Def Jam to play it for Fab & Skane Dolla, we were waiting for about 3 hours because Fab was in a meeting with Jay z. When Fab came out he told us that Jay-z didn't want to mess up his relationship with Timberland so he's not taking any new beats for "Make Me Better" Vers & I was very disappointed but we still wanted him to hear it but after a while we ended up just leaving. On the Drive home we were a lil upset about what just went down and we still felt like the record was real crazy. So we decided to shop the record to a few artist we thought would sound crazy on the record. We started with Joe Budden, now this took place about March of 2007, We sent tracks to Joe before but never heard anything back, until now! He called use back like 15mins after we sent it..lol.." Yo this is Crazy.. Finally you guys give me something i can work with". Keep in mind this was before Mood Music 3 or anything of that mixtape stuff he was doing.  He said he was gonna write to it so we said cool, we both like Joe Budden so why not! After that phone call we never heard anything else from Joe, no phone call, no email, and it wasn't on Mood Music 3 or the mixtapes so we thought he changed his mind on the record. Fast Forward a Year.. March 2008 Versatile is in a meeting at atlantic records and he playing records for Maino's Project and The A&R Brian Berger hears the tracks and loves it! He plays it for Maino and Maino loves it. Maino then records to it and the song comes out hot and they wanna buy the record and use it for Maino's Album. Now since we haven't talk to Joe in about a year, we both agree to do it. Atlantic cuts the check and Maino buys the record (end of story so we thought) Not even a week later Joe Budden pops up and tells us he wrote this CRAZY idea to the record. Something about having a conversation with God trying to get into heaven. After telling him that we had already sold the track to Maino, he then tells us that he'll talk to Maino. That was the last time we spoke to Joe.

September 2008 Versatile was playing around online and Google's produced by Versatile & Dilemma to see what comes up, he saw "Pray for Me" Produced by Versatile & Dilemma
He clicked on the link and there it was,  Joe Budden's Padded Room's Track List.  We didn't believe it at 1st until it popped up in the XXL Mag after that. Even still, we didnt do anything about it cuz Maino was supposed to drop in October 2008, and Joe wasn't dropping until Feb of 2009 so we didn't really think nothing of it as long as Maino Drops 1st. Once we got word that Maino album got pushed back to June of 2009 we knew something was about to go down. We let the people at Atlantic know what was going on and they said they would take care of it. Weeks later Joe Budden Drops and the record is on there... WOW!! in Best Buy right now! For Sale!...Wow... I didn't know how to feel about it because it was a good song but still it was Bad Business. Now if Maino doesn't use the record because of what Joe did, Vers & I loose money & a major placement opp!! Long Story Short (kinda too late) Maino still used it so i guess they just don't care.... Versatile & I really lucked out!

It's a great example of Budden's mixing not being on par with other cats (at the time at least).  I prefer Maino's final sound of the beat than Budden's despite enjoying Budden's track more.  Anyways, both made dope tracks and is a good example of flipping the same beat  different ways.

Plenty of things to get excited about here:

1) The song is actually great and not the usual corny first single shit.

2) He's FINALLY rapping over beats produced by someone else than himself or Dre.

3) The accent is GONE GONE GONE!!!

However there are some things which could have made this single much better:

1) The hook is great but Eminem is NOT a singer. He should have gotten someone like Drake to sing it.

2) The track sounds underproduced, like it was put together in 3 minutes and not properly mixed. Could have used a lot more work.

3) The singing middle part is awful, should have been scrapped.

Still great shit and it makes me anticipate the album even more than I already did. I don't necessarily like that he's dissing Relapse though, as that was a great album. Infact, the Relapse bous CD that came out before CHristmas was far worse than Relapse.

Haha I love the bridge, it just sounds too funny :D

I agree on the beat though.. could use more mixing and that snare is annoying.

Nice song tho

This is better than the entire Relapse album combined. You can hear that it benefit's Eminem to work with new producers. The beats on Relapse was mediocre and bland, and somewhat uninspiring. However, I think Recovery will be very good

If the beats on relapse were mediocre and bland then that makes this beat the equivalent of someone farting for a bassline and another person hitting a stick on a can every few seconds.

And this song is nowhere near Deja vu.This song isnt even as good as beautiful or hello for that matter.

Word this has nothing on Deja Vu, Underground, Hello, Same Song And Dance...

Song is dope, Dre needs to mix the shit outta that beat though, make the piano louder, add a thick ass bass line, get some crisper snares in there. Em sounding on point though, the bridge is pretty wack, raps are fire though, interesting to see he regrets relapse, atleast he knows the accent sucks though lol, raps were always dope, just bullshit accent!

Real interested to see how Recovery turns out, this was a good time for Em to do a complete 360 to his usual format and reinvent himself as an artist, this is some mega stadium music for real

Production wise I agree with the unfavourable comparison you make to the likes of deja vu lyrically this is some great shit and the more I listen to it, the more I appreciate just how tight his rhymes are and how insanely good the flow is.

Yes...Eminem is too corny and then he is too gangster and then he is too fake and then he is too sentimental and then he is playing a clown and i don't like that

Some people are never happy but this song to me is the shit

Yeah, I'm with those that think the production on Relapse is far superior than this tracks.  I don't mind the accent but do prefer his vocal style on this track despite the singing.

But the more i hate the beat. Its just SHIT. Theres no other way to describe it. It sounds like an unfinished TI or Rick Ross beat.

I hope the rest of the album follows suit.
did we listen to the same album?

You didn't think it sounded a lot more poppy than the tone of the rest of "Relapse," ?  I have to say I thought the same thing about "Crack a Bottle," which is a shame because it was one of the few accent-free tracks on the album.  But to me those two songs, while okay as stand alone songs, seem oddly out of place within the context of the album.
well if you really want to go that route, i'm sure you can mention more songs from that album that fit the description?
it's not like the rest of the album is dark

Good to hear Em using his normal voice again and spitting some worthwhile lyrics.  However, the beat is very mediocre and the hook/bridge is just alright.

But for real, why can't Em spit some relevant shit with Dre's team overseeing production duties?  This beat is so underwhelming and disappointing yet he wants to make music that is more timeless.  This ain't the one.

Relapse had 3-4 decent beats, rest of them was mediocre. If anyone besides Dre had produced "must be the ganja", "same song and dance", or even "hello" you would probably dislike them.
I for one think this beat is great. Suits Eminem perfectly, nice and simple and has a great uplifting feeling.

It seemed pretty dark to me.  But it has been a while, so let's have a look see:

1. Dr. West

Doctor starts out friendly then basically turns to Satan and tries to tempt Em with Drugs.  I'm goint to have to say "dark."

2. 3 AM

Entire song is about Eminem murdering people.  I've heard some say it was based loosely off real life serial killer H. H. Holmes..."dark"

3. My Mom

Okay.  Here, we have Em rapping once again about his mom's drug addiction. I wouldn't say this is as dark as the previous two tracks because Em has added a comedic tone to his delivery.  But the subject matter is definitely dark, so I'm going to still go with "dark."

4. Insane

Em's stepdad fucks him in the ass...."dark."

5. Bagpipes from Bagdad

Okay.  I can't really call this "dark."  So I'm going to have to give this one to you.  It's not really poppy sounding either though.  Just weird.  And pretty hilarious.

6. Hello

Sorta "dark" because of the subject matter, but again Em's delivery keeps it lighter than it otherwise would be.

7. Tonya

Skit where Eminem pretends to help a girl who's car broke down, so he can get her in his car and kill her. "Dark."

8. Same Song and Dance

Same as above... "Hella-dark."

9. We Made You

Em raps about Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson and sleeping with Sarah Palin.... "Light and Poppy"

10. Medicine Ball

I think I would put this somewhere in-between dark and funny.  Em raps about Christopher Reeve again, who's now been dead for several years, which is definitely morbid.  But there definitely are some funny punch lines on here as well.  Still wouldn't call this "poppy."

11. Paul

Okay.  Not "dark."  Kinda funny the first time you hear it, and then less funny each subsequent time.

12. Stay Wide Awake

I would say this is dark.  Beat's dark, lyrics are dark.  And that umbrella line is gross, by the way. "Dark."

13. Old Time's Sake

I had forgotten about this track.  Which is weird in and of itself, because I normally don't forget about tracks that feature Dre.  Anyway, this track isn't dark at all, but it also isn't poppy.  It's kind of just there.  I would say this is similar to the Dre/Em collabos from the other Eminem albums, only not quite as good.

14. Must be the Ganja

The song itself isn't dark, but it leads into a skit that's really dark.  So I suppose people can decide for themselves whether or not they think this one should be considered dark.

15. Mr. Mathers

Em's coding.  EMTs are trying to bring him back...."dark."

16. Deja Vu

One of my personal favorites on the album.  Eminem's talking about how messed up everything got when he was dealing with his drug addiction.  "Dark."

17. Beautiful

Okay.  This one is kind of an interesting one.  It's not really one of my favorites from the album by any means.  But it seems to be an example of a song that is both "dark and poppy sounding."  But I'll say this, if I were to try to edit out poppy sounding songs to keep the tone of the album consistant, I might still lose this.

18. Crack a Bottle

Okay, so here we have Em, Dre, and 50 rapping over a poppy sounding beat about getting drunk and having bitches in the car with them.  To me, this was obviously made with the thought of having it as a single in mind.  Sure, there's a couple curse words in it, here and there.  But not what I would consider excessive cursing, especially for Em.  I still have to go with "light and poppy."

19. Underground

Alright.  Last one.  Beat's kinda dark on this one.  Eminem's flow is more lyrical than anything else.  Nothing on here is especially dark, but not particularly in contradiction to the tone of the overall album, either.

There you go, Dreday.  Just for you.  My opinion on the whooooooole album. lol  You were right right.  There were a few more tracks, that in retrospect, I thought weren't dark tracks either.  Btw, I don't think I've ever typed "dark" as many in trying to make a point, as I did just there.  I still stand by my opinion though that "We Made You" and "Crack a Bottle" were the too most light-hearted tracks on the album.  And they both seem poppier to me than "I'm Not Afraid."

appreciate the sentiment of this, much more meaningful than some of em's recent shit. boi-1da took it bit too far with that snare sound though, definitely one of his weaker beats. and while he can get away with it with the whole personal vibe and popularity, would be better with a female vocalist singing instead of em.

its a decent track though.

The beat makes sense IF its an indication of eminem going back to his roots in hiphop and getting back to basics and just making good joints. Its not bad at all imo though the drum pattern is OTT and to be honest, if anything this sounds like a typical eminem mediocre production just with a less monotone sound and sounding abit more atmospheric with the string/synth or whatever it is in the background constantly and with additional keys. Infact i wouldnt be suprised to see some additional eminem work on the beat.

Regardless this is a good joint. The comparisons with the production on relapse is stupid because regardless if the beats on relapse were superior, the joints mostly were wack so as productions they were weak and bland often. And the beats regardless of this track on relapse wasnt anything amazing apart from a few nice nice beats but again, as a whole joint and as a cd, relapse was weak. This on the other hand is a more than solid start to recovery, cant complain at all. And im straight up, i dont care about hurting eminem groupies lol, i just say it like i see it  ;)

Apparently Havocs got a beat on the album.

I love the verses but the chorus is just cheesy to me.

Havoc rarely disappoints, one of the real underrated producers in hip hop. i agree to an extent that the chorus is kinda cheesy, but i think it almost fits into the radio-friendly side, but then lyrically its one of his strongest singles for years...almost caters to both markets

I hope the rest of the album follows suit.
did we listen to the same album?

This ain't the one.
looks like we're on the same page

This is better than the entire Relapse album combined. You can hear that it benefit's Eminem to work with new producers. The beats on Relapse was mediocre and bland, and somewhat uninspiring. However, I think Recovery will be very good

If the beats on relapse were mediocre and bland then that makes this beat the equivalent of someone farting for a bassline and another person hitting a stick on a can every few seconds.
oh shit, you're getting more serious lately, jay! nice.

agreed, simple Dre beat> this boring beat

It seemed pretty dark to me.  But it has been a while, so let's have a look see:

There you go, Dreday.  Just for you.  My opinion on the whooooooole album. lol  You were right right.  There were a few more tracks, that in retrospect, I thought weren't dark tracks either.  Btw, I don't think I've ever typed "dark" as many in trying to make a point, as I did just there.  I still stand by my opinion though that "We Made You" and "Crack a Bottle" were the too most light-hearted tracks on the album.  And they both seem poppier to me than "I'm Not Afraid."
LOL i didn't expect a breakdown, but it's all good, i've read it, but only quoted a part of your post.
yes the single choices were obvious, i just disagree that they didn't fit the album at all.
your point about the subject matter is valid though

The more I listen to it two things become more and more apparent. One,eminem is completely on top of his game, his flow, voice, lyrics everything is top notch,I have high hopes for recovery. An the second this beat is fucking horrible, that snare is so cheap sounding and so irritating.Ugh.Every single beat on relapse was better then this.

hm, wrong. But thanks for trying.

What was wrong? Seems on point to me
he's just trying to discredit the opinion.

It's all good.  There's no right or wrong opinion on it.  In fact, Eminem obviously agreed more with you, or he wouldn't have kept those songs on the album. lol  I don't really think those songs are bad either.  Just a little light for the rest of the album.  But regardless, that's all just my opinion.

And this song is nowhere near Deja vu.This song isnt even as good as beautiful or hello for that matter.

This song worse than most songs on Relapse, After a couple of listenings, it has grown on me, but the production is awful. Also, on the second verse, it´s annoying to me that he seems to have payed to much attention to all the ones that whine and moan about "the accent"  that he used frequently on Relapse (actually I love that album, probably his best as a full lenght). Still , I think recovery will be a great album, remember this is just the first single!

I loved relapse, the beats on it were  :o :o :o , and eminem ripped some tracks up like Insane , Deja Vu, Underground and Beautifull.

This single is meh. The beat is lackluster and lacks any kind of energy, but eminem does rap on point as usual showing off his mad skillz

Speaking about eminem sales aint saying shit, dude dropped just loose it and my band and sold shit loads, most of his fans probably dont know shit about hiphop so really was ANYONE suprised to see eminem do well on the charts? lol

Speaking of not afraid though, i remember when i first heard it i thought it was solid and refreshing for eminem to go the 8mile route rather than the corny route for his first single. AND i prediced it'd be huge which i think it will be but i didnt think it was anything amazing but a dope joint. Then i heard it a few more times and i liked it more and then it got really played out quick. J coles joint on the other hand i played out too much, kept bumping it but when i check it now, its still fresh, the music, dude on the mic, its energy and good music.

Eminem should do great with this single though, its very solid but im already waiting on hearing something else now lol, not afraid aint something to jam come summer.

Infact unless one of these bigger names step up, im guessing someone unexpected will like usual step up with their young energy for the summer shit

Im def looking forward to hearing eminems album though, should be a solid release finally if this is anything to go by. But im already waiting on a next joint, this has gone boring for me lol

it's doing something that hasn't been done in Hip Hop since 1997 lol.

Fair enough, i guess it just goes to show the power of the brand that is eminem. I can think of many singles which have been more commercial and better than this which would never sell as much and i guess have not since the shit u stated about 1997.

Like i said, if dude could get people to buy his shit with records like just loose it, imagine how many eminem fans will be going ape shit when he drops a solid record for a single.  :o :o

Im already expecting to hear the usual shit when his album drops soon enough ''eminems back/GOAT/best rapper ever/alive.../who said he fell off? (because the last however many years become irrelavent lol) etc)

BUT this time, i sense he come out with something respectable after his last two efforts. And i wont clown on anybody if he does  :) :)

oh and on a side note, congrats to eminem on the number 1 debut, not that im suprised in the slightest he is doing well

Who knows, what i do know is it was horrible waste of around 4 mins.

His first two singles from his first two lps were more than solid for the time they were released (my name is/real slim shady) but then after that it became too much of a gimmick and a gimmick fail and just terrible.

I guess.

I know I was disappointed with We Made You.  I was expecting a scathing diss track against certain artists or a reflection on fans & artists.  It felt like a half-assed version of the latter.  More or less Joell Ortiz approach to the track was what I expected.

Irrelavent? He was M.I.A. for a few years and when he came back, he had the biggest-selling hip-hop album of the year. Not everyone was feeling it but it was still a hot topic of discussion.
