I'm from Kansas City, and it's pretty much impossible for any rapper from here to make a decent album.  The hip-hop culture here is just about being ignorant and being ghetto  more than it is about making great music.  I give Tech 9 credit for not going the route of the rest of KC, and being by far the best rapper in the area, but to say his albums were the best in their year? You got to be smokin crack man...  but ohhh well, nice thread anyway.

My 2008 Nas album and 2009 Eminem album picks weren't really compliments, but rather a statement on just how far hip-hop has fallen off.

...My critique of your albums is that you didn't show the West Coast any love.

...I like that you mentioned Wild Style, that was a great project all around, one of the most important things ever done in hip-hop.

...I noticed a couple people now have picked Madvilian, maybe I will have to check that album out myself.

Does anybody else think 1998, 1995 & 1996 seem the best years in hip-hop now, those were the hardest choices by far.

1988: Big Daddy Kane / BDP / Eazy-E / EPMD / Rakim / NWA / PE / Too Short

1995: Big L / BTNH / BLH / Cypress Hill / DJ Quik / GZA / Kool G Rap / Mobb Deep / ODB / Onyx / Raekwon / Tha Dogg Pound / 2Pac

1996: Chino XL / Ghostface / Heltah Skeltah / Jay-Z / Mobb Deep / Nas / Outkast / Ras Kass / Redman / UGK / WSC / Xzibit / 2Pac

^Every one of these album can be called the greatest album of all time without anybody questioning it^

Definitely I could agree with that.  Although, I usually see 1994 mentioned before 1995.   I think 94 was the year of Illmatic, 36 Chambers, G Funk Era, Ready to Die, Murder Was The Case

36 chambers is 93.
Even though ready to die, The Sun Rises In The East, Regulate, Tical, Resurrection & Creepin on ah come up are all seen as classics I believe pretty much everybody can agree that none of them can fuck with illmatic.

2000:  Marshal Mathers LP
2001:  Stillmatic
2002:  God's Son
2003:  Get Rich Or Die Trying
2004:  Damian Marley- Welcome To Jamrock

2007:  Lupe Fiasco's Food And Liquor
2008:  Nas- Untitled
2009:  Eminem- Relapse
2010:  Nas and Marley- Distant Relative

lmao this is clearly some kid who never even knew hip hop till eminem came out so he just listed a bunch of old westcoast albums that he kinda likes or thinks are important. whatever the case you must have a shit taste in hip-hop and easily buy into anything that is marketed to you.

to phrase it in another way, this is the kindof list some indie kid or pop kid would produce when asked their favourite rap albums. "oh yeah i LOOOOOVE rap music, let me tell you how much i love nas, eminem, and this token reggae artist!"  lmao

lmao, this is clearly one of those fake ass, pretentious fucks, who will mention an underground artist over a mainstream artist just to appear to know a lot about hip-hop and gain attention for his opinions.

Sometimes the obvious must be stated to keep it real.  Eminem's Slim Shady LP and Marshal Mathers LP were the best albums in that year, I'm not going to say Black On Both Sides or Let's Get Free were the best album just so I can prove to my knowledge of hip-hop and it's history.   Dre says that the Marshal Mathers LP was "the closest he ever came to making a perfect album".  So is Dr. Dre new to the game, and he doesn't know shit about hip-hop?

Listen faggot, it's pretty simple, like a lot of the O.G.'s at this forum I got into hip-hop back in 93' through the Chronic album and Dre, and Snoop and Death Row Records and all that.  So that's why you see a lot of West Coast artists on my list in the early and mid-90's.   Then when I heard Dre's first artist released on Aftermath was going to be a white rapper from Detroit, I knew he had to be great or Dre wouldn't have been fucking with him.  So right away I was into Eminem at a time when a lot of people were hating on him (of course now they want to go back and say SlimShadyLP was his best album but they were't saying it at the time).

So because I was a big fan of Dre and a fan of Eminem, that means I don't know shit about hip-hop and it's history?  I'm just keeping it real.   I stayed true to what I was listening to at that stage in my life as far as 93 and on... , the albums I listed before 93 those are albums I only listened to later in life after they were outdated.

i aint gonna spend the time on each and every year but hip hop is dead is 2006, a few albums from that year i enjoyed and thought were far better than that:

j dilla - donuts  (best album of the year, a very important hip-hop album, nas didnt make any sort of statement with his album other than show he is out of touch, dilla breathed new life into the genre and inspired so many people with this album).
bronze nazareth - the great migration
ghostface - fishscale
t.i - king
clipse- hell hath no fury

you really think in the past 10 years, 5 of those years the best album was made by nas?

hahahah get the fuck outta here

Other than 2pac and Eminem, there are no other rappers than can fuck with Nas' career.

im not down playin nas, but im sayin there is no way in hell any of those albums were album of the year. even the biggest nas stan is not gonna say hip hop is dead was album of the year

Around 2006/2007 Lil Wayne, and snappin and poppin, club music, ignorant south music started dominating hip-hop.  Even the underground I think has suffered a lot.  So to make up for it I've gotten more nostalgic and gone back and checked out more 80's and 90's releases I may have missed, along with listening to more Reggae and Senegalese music.

Nas Hip-Hop Is Dead may not be a classic record but I think it was very important in it's time and easily the best album in an otherwise horrible year for hip-hop.  I even made a whole thread about this album.  Then by the time his Untitled/Nigger album came out the game was in an even worse state, so although it's not even half as good as Hip-Hop Is Dead in my eyes, it was still the best album of that year (but that's not saying much).

I like Nas' Hip-Hop Is Dead album so much I've even made many threads about the album here at the forum, this one I made just last week..

I felt Jacka had the best album out of everything that I heard, last year. As for 2007, I almost left it blank as a fuck you to one of the most depressingly mediocre years for hip-hop releases EVER.

2007 was a great year, I thought it was hard to decide.
I couldn't choose between "The Weatherman LP" & Guilty By Affiliation" and then I hadn't even taken "Jesus Price Supastar" into consideration.

"For Whom the Beat tolls" might not have been the best album but "Poet Laureate Infinity" is ground breaking.

I'd name the other dope albums but the list would be too long.

youre an obvious south-hater, didnt even care to mention your thoughts on donuts, and actually think hip hop is dead was "very important album for its time". why exactly was it important and not just another nas album? hip hop isnt dead, and wasnt dead. if you have certain strict ideals about what good hip-hop is and are stuck in the 90s then yes, i can see why you might think that, but for the rest of us.... fuck that shit.

Judging by your posts and threads all you listen to is mainstream hip hop, and you go on about hip hop being dead and that Damein Marley is the best thing in rap just now. I cant take you seriously.

It's always people who listen to (Borderline) mainstream that complain hip-hop is dead.
