I've been hooked on new talent from Atlanta for some time. Namely Pill, Donnis, Ace Hood, B.o.B. and Stat Quo.

Then there's also J. Cole from North Carolina (although I consider him an East Coast cat based on his flow and sound) and Jay Electronica & Curren$y from New Orleans.

Yeah I'm new schooled, sue me :P.

I think the South has the worst rappers & my username is about one lol.

Sure, they have good rappers. But they also have Gucci Mane, OJ Da Juiceman, Shawty Lo, Soulja Boy, D4L, Dem Franchize Boys & whoever made that "Stanky Leg" song.

But I'd say as far as rapping goes, East, West & Midwest have them covered.

Who does the South have? Andre & Scarface & Jay Electronica? Maybe 3000 & Face 10 years ago, but in 2010 I'll take plenty of rappers over them.

& Jay is amazing, but he doesn't even use that "southern sound" with the production or lyrically & "surprise, surprise" he's the best lol.

Every region has wack rappers....

The South has less rappers who are recognized as "great." So what? That doesn't mean its a worse place for hip hop. I mean the East coast has more rappers considered great than the west coast. But you don't see people going around saying west coast hip hop sucks or East >>> West. Some regions just get more attention than others.

Yeah, but the South's worst is easily the worst of the worst.

& as far as attention goes, I'd say the South gets more than any region. The West is all underground & irrelevant, the East has basically Jay-Z & Fab that get radio play, unless I'm forgetting someone & the Midwest only has Eminem & Kanye (which is a major part of the radio today). But then the South gets T.I., Luda, Wayne, Ross & then whatever wack one hit wonder single that the terrible rappers I named in my previous post made. So they get plenty of attention, but I think the best of the best rappers on every other coast are better than the best of the best in the South.

Think about it, there aren't many great artists coming out of the South; I don't think T.I., Luda, Wayne, Ross or even Chamillionaire are that great. Basically my point is, lets just say those rappers rapped the same & claimed another region, I would put them on the B list of artists for that region.

I hate things like that because I also forget people, but..

East - Nas, Black Thought, Joe Budden, Mos Def, Joell Ortiz
Midwest - Eminem, Common, Royce, Esham, Kanye, Tech N9ne
West - Crooked I, Murs, Bishop, Xzibit (West is actually a lot weaker than I thought, but still better than the South)
South - J. Cole (if you count him), Jay Electronica, Bun B & that's honestly about it.

Take into account that this is just in today's game, otherwise, Rakim, Wu-Tang, Ice Cube, Jay-Z, Outkast, Face, etc. would all be named on their respective coasts.

EDIT: Forgot Hopsin on the West & Lupe is pretty close for the Midwest.

lol, very true. I remove him from my West list & insert Spider Loc.

Don't listen to that shit, Hack. I swear to you & would put a BILLION dollar bet down on it, in cash...in nickels actually, that if Method Man never made a solo album & was only judged based off of his work within the group of Wu-Tang, he'd still get the same love he gets today & people would still say he's amazing.

AM I COMPARING METHOD MAN AND HIS WU-TANG MATERIAL TO CROOKED I AND HIS SLAUGHTERHOUSE MATERIAL? NO! So don't make a smartass comment, its just the principal that that's how it would go down.

The difference? Crooked I gets love by people & the occasional person will say "Crooked I >>> great rapper", a fan of that great rapper gets his feelings hurt & will throw whatever he has to in order to make Crooked look bad. Crooked doesn't have that legendary status & probably never will, but because of that, he can't get passes like that. So when he's compared to people's favorites, people will be upset lol.

the spotlight goes in cycles. I can remember a time when people used to make fun of Southern rappers and how they talk and sound. Even almighty Outkast, so for me the shine the south gets is well deserved and a loooooooong time coming. Good or horrible rappers are taking advantage of that and I ain't mad at them.

Also what is your criteria for "today's game"? How can you include Xzibit and not Outkast considering they are way more active than he is? I mean cmon, Big Boi just released a pretty solid album this year.

A few more worthy names....Cunninlynguists, Khujo, Cee-Lo (if he counts), Devin the Dude, Little Brother, Supastition

Xzibit still drops great consistent music, in my opinion.

Big Boi dropped an album that, like you said, was "solid" that people went a little crazy over because it's better than what we usually get out of the South, but that doesn't make it great.

This. I think all this topic proves is there are a lot of great Southern artists people either overlook or haven't bothered to check out yet.

And tbh Cham I think your list is incredibly weak. I like Bishop and Crooked but I dont consider them the best from the west let alone better than the best artists from the south. It says a lot about the strength of your list when 2 haven't dropped debut albums yet and 1 hasn't dropped an album in years.

Actually your list serves the purpose of this thread better because it implies the west is just as weak as the south.  ;D And all I was saying in the first place is that every region has great artists if you bother to look.

Tbh I listen to more west coast rappers than southern rappers. But there's more than enough good music coming from there, like the names I've already mentioned.

My list was "A-List" rappers, not people who put out "good music".

Fabolous puts out "good music", but he isn't one of the best artists on East Coast, in my opinion.

& yeah, I guess the West is pretty weak. I suppose the South just appears worse because their worst is REALLY bad.

Don't listen to that shit, Hack. I swear to you & would put a BILLION dollar bet down on it, in cash...in nickels actually, that if Method Man never made a solo album & was only judged based off of his work within the group of Wu-Tang, he'd still get the same love he gets today & people would still say he's amazing.

um yeah he would because he was a part of a classic album unlike crooked who has a million freestyles & one subpar group album

Way to delete the rest of what I wrote lol. Kind of takes it out of context.

But the point is, Million Dollar Story gets delayed (wouldn't surprise me lol), Slaughterhouse drops an AMAZING album next year, you fucks are still going to say "Crooked doesn't have an album, he's not good, etc".

You know that's true too. Where if Meth never dropped a solo album it wouldn't matter, same love. It drives home the point that you guys really don't care how you sound at the end of the day, as long as the artists you want to put in the bad light, get seen in the bad light lol.

Well Cham you know what at the end of the day is gonna stop people from saying that about Crooked? A album. If If was a 5th we would all be fucked up as the saying goes and Meth not only has A album out, he has it times 4 so yeah until Crook drops something outside of the group, this will continue, warranted or not.

Good point. I'd still consider him one of the best on the West right now, regardless of having an album out. Take it how you want in terms of what that means for the West, but I don't see many putting out material that makes his freestyles look weak.

I don't dispute the material, but again for most, artists ultimately are judged by albums. To give a analogy people look at freestyles as practice and albums has game time. Although impressive 50-80 weeks of material, most look at it as "practice" as AI would say lol.

There are only DL numbers and hype to measure the success where as albums are more looked at as "game time". When it counts the most to people. I completely understand what you are saying but the masses will always have a asterisk by his name till that album drops.

my sister worked with him at federal express back in 94-95..and shes cool with his mom...he gets hated on down south cause his music tends to lean toward the eastcoast boom bap sound of things..but i love his beats i think it,adds more diversity to the southern sound.

Besides lacking the album, what's wrong with Crooked I rapping?

More importantly, what does Gucci Mane have or some other scrub you're a fan of have on Crooked I rapping? lmfao.

^How is that stupid? Crooked I isn't in my Top 10 artists. I've been called a "stan" of over 5 rappers, that's incredible LMFAO.

I don't see the logic how you're going to bounce around Crooked thread to Crooked thread with no intent of seeing it straight, always with a "Crooked" opinion (oh, yeah. just did that lol) & then be like "oh yeah, Gucci screaming 'burrrrrrr' an entire song is in the system non-stop. hell yeah, i'ma fan of hip hop".

I'm not saying you have to like Crooked, but to be on his nuts nonstop, giving off a vibe that you have something against his music (you give that off, whether you think so or not) & then co-sign people like Gucci Mane is a REALLY bad look lmfao.

Lol I think you're confusing music with the movies thread on DBA. Where I said I watch classic/blockbuster movies as a social event. And you can't say you don't like a movie until you've seen it at least once  ;)

If you're going to watch those big movies as a social event you should also listen to lady gaga for the same reason.

That song isn't bad at all. The hook is pretty weak. But at least on the verses, he comes correct.

But if you're seriously comparing this & that Crooked I song I posted, that's absurd lol.

Somehow I don't think Lady Gaga has had the same cultural impact as Star Wars.  :D

And like I just said: You don't know whether you'll enjoy a movie until you've actually watched it. I know I don't like Lady Gaga because I've heard her music before.

I should say tho that if something does get enough hype around it I do check it out. Like I listened to Tha Carter III even tho I'm not a lil wayne fan because everyone was raving about it. But that's the last lil wayne project I listened to. And I don't see the hip hop community raving about Gucci.

Lol this is going nowhere fast. What is so hard to understand? I've heard her songs on the radio. I know what her voice sounds like. And I know her "style"/ what she sings about. And for crying out loud, I don't even listen to that genre of music.
