I know what you mean. And if some of the songs on these mixtapes were songs that he didn't think were good enough for "R.E.D." then I have to think there's a pretty good chance that "R.E.D." will turn out fine.

The Game Shocked By Runaway Success of 'Purp and Patron' Mixtape
The Game's Purp and Patron — a sprawling 29-track mixtape featuring guest appearances by Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Rick Ross, T-Pain and a long list of other hip-hop luminaries — is one of the hottest new releases this week. Rolling Stone caught up with the Los Angeles rapper Thursday afternoon to find out what inspired him to record P&P and check on his progress on his upcoming studio record The R.E.D. Album and another mixtape, The Hangover, that he's planning on releasing in the next few days.
Do you have an idea of how many copies of Purp and Patron have been downloaded so far?
In the first two hours, we were at, like, 200,000. I have my guys checking, and now we're close to 1.1 million downloads in three days with all the sites combined. Is there another word that supersedes "amazing"? It's that.
Did you expect Purp and Patron to take off on Twitter and blogs like it has? Did you try to make that happen?
F-pound-C-K no! I just put the tape out, and once my fans got ahold of it I guess they told somebody else's fans and those fans told somebody else's fans and everybody kinda chimed in.
This has been a big success, but it's a mixtape. In your mind, is there a difference between an album and a mixtape?
A mixtape is pretty much just calling in favors from, you know, some of the biggest rap superstars who happen to be good friends of mine off the mic and them just delivering for me and me throwing it all out there. But an album, you know, I've got to take my time because that's my legacy. I can joke and I can play around with different topics and lyrics and different rhyme patterns and sounds on a mixtape, but on an album I've got to take it seriously because that's who I am, it's what defines me.
What if a popular mixtape like this ends up being your legacy?
Then so be it. Let's just wait and see what it is. I'll take either/or, man.
Purp and Patron is a pretty huge collection of songs. How long did it take to put it all together?
The mixtape took me about seven days. The new album has damn near took me two years. People don't understand that with a mixtape, you don't have to go through too many clearances, and you just come up to an agreement with the producers. You just spread out, it's a throwaway. An album, though, there's politics, label politics. There's timing — this artist has to come out at this time, and we gotta set up this artist right. There's a lot more that goes into it, and plus I got to feed my family and take care of my stuff on a monthly basis so I go on tour for three months here, four months here, and I work on the album here and there. The songs outdate themselves so I got to make new songs.
It's a long process. I don't think everyone factors that in when the date gets pushed back. I'm trying to make as much quality as I possibly can and I'm not going to put out no half-assed album. That's not the way Dr. Dre taught me to make music and create classic albums.
Your representative said you were going into the studio later. What are you working on now?
I'm finishing up The Hangover, which is the 10 or 20 tracks that didn't make Purp and Patron, the double-disc, and I'm gonna throw that out this weekend or probably this Monday. I'm gonna finish that up tonight and then I've got to get back to work on The R.E.D. Album because I've got some important people in town and we've got to get it in.

Compton, California emcee Game has had a massive week, by way of his Purp & Patron double-mixtape. The effort, hosted by both Funkmaster Flex and DJ Skee has fans excited about the upcoming R.E.D. album.
Speaking with HipHopDX just minutes ago, Game spoke about getting the legendary club deejay and radio personality Funkmaster Flex to co-host this monstrous tape. For starters, the mixtape's title took its form from simple studio surroundings. "I told [DJ] Skee that it was about time for another mixtape, because I had been getting a bunch of things done just on the random - [not necessarily for the R.E.D.] album. I called [Lil] Wayne and I called [Fabolous], just callin' in favors. I just knew I was gonna put out a mixtape, but I didn't even know what I was gonna call it. We was in the studio, drinkin' this Cafe Patron, which is the bottle featured on the tape [cover], and smokin' and everything. One of my boys was like, 'Yo, we gonna call it Purp & Patron.' So I called Skee [and asked] to get a cover drawn up."
Once Game went public with the concept, Hot 97's evening deejay wanted in. "As soon as I put the avatar on my phone, [Funkmaster] Flex called me up like, 'Yo, I'm bein' part of this thing. Call Skee and let him know it's me and him.'" DJ Skee, who has been making mixtapes with Game for nearly eight years, agreed to have the legendary mixmaster host.
Without much warning, the double-mixtape released on Monday. The short notice was actually game taking a challenge from Black Wall Street producer Ike. "I didn't think I was gonna be able to make the deadline, but my boy challenged me," said the rapper. On Saturday at 11 a.m. PST, the rapper says he had nothing recorded, but began feverishly writing and recording. "I just started writin' my verses to everything I had. Shit, I went in, man. My engineer Sam, I kept asking him, 'Sam, where we at?'" The contents of Purp & Patron went from three songs, to 12, to 18, to a total of 30. "Send Skee 30 songs," Game told his engineer, without having previously conceptualized a double-mixtape. "Shit, it's called Purp & Patron. Let's make one Purp, let's make one Patron."
When DJ Skee received the weekend recordings, Monday's 4:20 pm EST deadline was fast approaching. "Skee was on an airplane from New York to L.A. He sequenced the tape and put the drops in, and got the tape right on the plane," Game revealed. "As soon as he landed [we put it out]." Although the initial deadline was not met, Game teased fans, claiming he meant Pacific Standard Time instead. Once the tape reached online sites, the fans swarmed. With a hearty laugh, Game told DX, "That shit spread like HIV on a homo dick."
Among the songs that fans are talking about the most on Purp & Patron is the Cool & Dre-produced "The Kill" . Asked about the La Roux-sampling song, Game provided an interesting anecdote. "I hadn't talked to Nas in like a year, since [L.A.X. when] we did 'Letter To The King.' Out of nowhere, I get a text from this fuckin' [New York] number, and I read the text: 'Yo, it's Esco. Two words: 'The Kill.'" As Game tried to engage in a text conversation with his friend and collaborator, Nas stopped respond. With a chuckle, Game stated, "He disappeared again. He just chimed in to give me props on 'The Kill.'"
More than just Nas' blessings, the song is a favorite by fans. "That song is crazy, I love 'The Kill.' That's my favorite song on the mixtape," said Game. "I just got off the phone with Skee like two minutes [ago], and we was talkin' about how we gonna shoot this video to 'The Kill,' 'cause fans are really going crazy for it. So we're gonna have to do a visual. We're gonna work on that in the next seven days."
Asked about the inspiration to the song, Game affirmed his critics for bringing the lyrics out. "I was in the mind-state of people always doubting me, lyrically. I think it's 'cause I have fun and I got plenty styles. I can change my voice and change my style, and I'm always havin' fun on records. I don't know why people doubt me lyrically, but I really am a superb lyricist." The self-confident emcee continued, "When I sit down and really give myself a chance to think and vibe with a beat, [I can be great]. I think I've proved that album-after-album, joint-after-joint, from 'Hate It Or Love It' to 'My Life' to 'Dreams' on down to 'The Kill.' When I start writing real music, it always comes across like this."
The emcee also praised longtime collaborators Cool & Dre, as well as his deep for the culture. "When I get a beat like that, and I'm in that real music, real Hip Hop, then that's gonna be the outcome every time."

Last week, Game gave away "Purp & Patron," his third mixtape in the last nine months. Today he's offering "The Hangover," comprised of tracks that didn't make the cut of its 29-song predecessor. Presumably, Jayceon Taylor is massively inspired by the editing decisions employed in Olivier Assayas' Carlos the Jackal biopic -- after all, Ilich Sanchez may be the last remaining person who hasn't yet collaborated with the Compton rapper.
The Interscope-signed rapper has claimed in interviews that the tape has been downloaded more than a million times in just one week. Ernst & Young has yet to confirm. At the very least, it's recommended that you at least download Hip Hop Is Read's "Purp & Patron Single Shot," a fine distillation of the sprawling tape's best moments.
In the interest of promoting his new tape and dispelling rumors surrounding his much-delayed "R.E.D." album, Game spoke with Pop & Hiss.
How do you think this mixtape stacks up and stands out compared to the other ones you've released over the last nine months?
I think that this is the best mixtape I've ever put out. Period. It's all positive, no beef, lots of guest appearances from my friends on and off the mike. And even Funkmaster Flex came in and did drops. Everyone's on there.
So what's the deal with "The Hangover" tape? Were these all songs initially intended for "R.E.D.?"
There were songs that didn't make the cut of "Purp & Patron." There were just too many songs and the decision to make it two CDs came at the last minute. We had a conversation about it on Friday and then the changes were made a few hours later and it was released.
What's the status of "R.E.D."? You've been saying in interviews this week that the Interscope brass have given you a green light to pick a date.
Jimmy Iovine is real confident in me and my project. From what they've heard of the new record and the mixtape, the company told me that they're ready to get behind the project. But from my side, it's important to make all the right moves in order to get 100% out of the label -- what I need. I'm trying to make sure that everyone's all systems go, and we're about to gear up to drop the singles.
So, is it a matter of waiting for a single to break onto radio playlists?
It's definitely hard to get a single in the format of the 10 songs in rotation on pop culture, but I'm not worried about that. The radio doesn't necessarily dictate album sales. When I get a song that's big enough and it goes, it will be amazing. But I'm not stressing about getting that massive hit single. I haven't had a No. 1 record since "Hate It or Love It." But I do have the songs -- I have the crossover records and I have the street records. There's no way I can fail.
So what are you waiting on, exactly?
Actually, now what I’m doing is sequencing. I'm trying to get that one full sound from start to finish, and after that we’re good. The singles are in place.
And the finished record is still going to have beats from Dr. Dre, Pharrell and DJ Premier?
Yup. Pharrell's still executive-producing it too, and I'm trying to get a beat from Kanye to finish it out.
You've worked with a lot of producers over the years. Does rhyming over a DJ Premier beat put you in a different headspace when you're writing?
It’s funny you said that. You have to be a real hip-hop head to ask that question. As soon as I got that Premier beat, I knew that I had to rap different to it. I knew that I had to dig into it, and I think the song came out different than anything I've done before.
How does that differ from your writing process when you get a beat from Dre?
When you do a song with Dre, it's whatever Dre wants the writing process to be. You really don’t have a choice in the matter, and you realize it's best to just follow his example.
I'm sure you can't say anything, but journalistic duty requires me to ask a question about "Detox." Any new news on that front?
I've learned to stay away from talking about Dre’s album. It's his album and he'll let the cat out the bag when he wants. I can see that it's definitely coming out, though, and it's going to feature some of the heaviest artists to ever do it.
How did you end up getting on a track with Lil Boosie? Are you a big fan of his stuff?
Oh man, Lil Boosie is a good friend of mine and has been for a very long time -- since the days when he was younger and rapping with C-Loc. I'd always meet him when I was going back and forth throughout the South doing things that I shouldn’t be doing. I was lucky enough to get him to a record a verse before he went to jail.
You're known for being heavily influenced by West Coast artists. Were you pretty influenced by Southern rappers too?
I grew up on N.W.A, Compton's Most Wanted and DJ Quik -- that’s what I'm used to hearing, but my hip-hop mind ventured into the South early on. I listened to Big Mike tapes, Geto Boys, C-Loc, Lil Boosie, Max Minelli. I've always been into the trap.
The RZA sued you this week for using "Heartbreaker" on "Purp & Patron." What happened?
RZA came to the studio and said, "I have this beat for you, it's yours." So I got on the track and he put out a cease and desist. There's no love lost. I have nothing but love for RZA. It had to do with sample clearances that neither of us had control of.
So, last word -- you want to make a prediction about the release date for "R.E.D.," or is it just safest to say summer?
I'll say summertime. I won't put my fans through any more actual dates that fall through. But it's coming soon. A lot of people say that "Documentary" is my best album, and people always have a tendency to say that with all the big artists. Most people usually say that the best Kanye or Jay-Z or Dre album is the first one. Personally, for me, it's "Doctor's Advocate." I did that on my own, no 50, no Dre, just me being raw and honest. But being a realist, none of those albums touches the "R.E.D." album. Everyone I play it for is like, "Wow." No one else is dropping albums of this caliber."

"Lost" is an instant classic. How did that not make the album? Crazy.
Game's been dropping quality shit. 44 joints in a week. Most of it quality. *Any* hip-hop head should be able to assemble their favourite 12 cuts from those 44 and have one hell of an album.
Some tracks don't quite live up to potential though. The beat to "Hangover" is great, but the mixing is all fucked up, possibly because the beat is jacked. "Dead" could have been classic with some quality mixing too.

Why do yall keep saying Lost is by Dre, it was confirmed to be by Cool & Dre even before it appeared in that video. Also, it sounds nothing like Dre. Only one that could be argued is that last track, but since his name isn't on it it's definitely not him, as they usually take every possible oppourtunity to advertise a Dre production.

This is a step up from Purp and Patron. But it still suffers from the same problem of consistency. There's some songs that are straight up wack where I'm like wtf game. Obviously he still has it in him to make dope tracks, but the question still remains as to whether he can make a good album. And I don't think its a good look that Pharrell is going to be producing R.E.D., as all the Pharrell songs we've heard have been weak. We'll see....
