Title: Computer help.. Windows Q.
Post by: Jome on January 12, 2003, 07:37:44 PM
I got a lot of unnecessary program running in the background, and they start when Windows starts up, and it takes up hella memory.

When I hit CTRL ALT DEL, I can see all this shit:
Netscape, mIRC, Explorer, Navapw32, GMT, Cmesys, Mediaman, Winnet, DW, Rundll32, Download, DirectCD, Loadqm, Systray, Systimer, Qttask..

I know 4 or 5 of these are necessary to run Windows, but I could have closed at least 5-8 of them.. they're slowing down the CPU-speed, and it's probably spy-ware among it too.
Anybody know where I can see the start-up commands, and what programs starts along with Windows? I was thinking there might be a start-up folder or something..
Better yet a little program who can keep this in check??
I have tried Ad-Aware, but that only removes some of it..

try

start/run/ and type "msconfig"

Click on the start up tab, and disable what you want...

From the list of programs you posted, id say these are unneccassry:
Netscape, mIRC, Cmesys[ i THINK this is a firewall],DirectCD, Loadqm[this shit slows down the comp a lot],  Qttask[this is a quicktime thing, You can kill it by going to quicktime player, then to edit, then to prefs., then quicktime prefs, then from the drop down select update checker, then uncheck the auto check]

I dont know what GMT is, sounds like sum gator, or windows time shit?
I dunno what Mediaman,Winnet,DW,Download[im guessin a dl program?],

You can also find out, what programs are associated with, from msconfig, peace

Edit:  Uninstall Ad-Ware and install a prog called SPYBOT, i heard its better, and that Adware stopped working on its program..

Ooh wee, I removed a ton of shit from the start-up section, and it's much faster now.
I removed 14 start-ups, LoL..

I'm still unsure about these though:

TaskMonitor - maybe it's the ALT+TAB thing??  :-\
RegShave
WinNet - Think this is some toolbar shit..
ScriptBlocking - Located in a Symantec folder..
StillImageMonitor -  ??? In the System-folder, so I doesn't dare to fuck with it.
GMT

Do you have a digi cam?  Cuz  i think regshave is sum digital camera shit, but i dont think its requred..
ScriptBlockin is related to norten antivirus
Stillimagemonitor is related to Optical devices using USB, so im guessin u have a cam, you need this, let it stay..
Taskmonitor - is sumting the disk defragger uses to optimize your hard disk and crap, its not really requred, but it is useful...so its up to you,,

GMT- if its gmt.exe then its spuware from gator and GAIN. .. try lookin for gator or gain from add remove programs, and if you see them, uninstall them.  Otherwise, end the task, and run an anti spyware program ...
