But the world kept on laughing long after the joke stopped being funny.
A 2008 Rolling Stone profile showed a woman in desperate need of help, living a junkie’s life in a garbage-covered flat. There were tabloid reports of Winehouse wandering around London barefoot in a bra and jeans. She appeared in embarrassing videos online, one with Pete Doherty (essentially Winehouse’s male counterpart) playing with mice, another where she sang a racist nursery rhyme. Just last month, Winehouse canceled a European tour after a disastrous concert in Serbia marred by dropped lyrics and loud booing from thousands of fans. Each instance of Winehouse publicly fucking up her life and career was fresh fodder for Amy Being Amy, a true-life Saturday Night Live skit that seemed to go on even after most people lost interest.
If you love Winehouse’s music—and let the record show that Amy Winehouse created one of the great pop records of the last decade in Back To Black—it’s easy to lash out at the media (as well as much as the public) for the cruelty it showed her in the final years of her life. But ultimately the saddest and most infuriating thing about all this is that Winehouse herself didn't—because she either would not or could not—prevent the wasting away of so much talent.
Winehouse displayed a knack for performing from an early age in the north London suburbs, forming a rap group at age 10 called Sweet ‘n’ Sour—which she later called “the little white Jewish Salt ‘n’ Pepa”—and attending the Sylvia Young Theatre School, a prep academy for young actors and singers. Winehouse later signed with British pop magnate Simon Fuller of Pop Idol fame, but she stubbornly went her own way in music, releasing her jazzy debut Frank in 2003. The album was a hit in Britain and earned a Mercury Music Prize nomination, but it wasn’t until Back To Black that she really blew up on an international level. The album, which has sold 2 million copies in the U.S. and close to 3 million in the U.K., came after an extended period of writer’s block and romantic turmoil with her boyfriend. A gifted songwriter as well as a knockout singer with a voice that exuded toughness and a wounded vulnerability just beneath the rough exterior, Winehouse poured her heartbreak into stunning songs like “You Know I’m No Good,” “Love Is A Losing Game,” “Wake Up Alone,” and “Rehab,” a defining mid-’00s single that unfortunately informed the cartoonish persona that Winehouse was never able to escape.
The body of work Winehouse leaves behind is criminally small, but what’s there is still worth celebrating. Because after all the headlines and letdowns and humiliations and cheap shots, what remains are some really great songs full of heart, pain, grit, balls, fists, tears, and a sturdy humanity that will live on once all the bullshit dissipates.

As far as artistic credentials, most big pop stars don't write their own music. Elvis Presley didn't write any of his music. Most of MJs hits were written by other people.

Haha yeh you got me on that one. I knew when writing about her 2 albums that somebody would mention Biggie. I guess the difference with Biggie is that because he was in Hip Hop, he was able to showcase his talents on a lot more platforms than Winehouse through rappin' on the corner, concerts before he broke through, freestyles and appearances, which in Hip Hop was commonplace.

The song mentions her album title. It's been stated to be about a real situation in her life. And there's zero evidence that she didn't write it. To claim that someone else wrote it is just blind wishful thinking on your part. You obviously have something against the girl.

A black women on channel 5’s news count years back, about her filing a suit against Island records surrounding the songs original writer. I guess she was paid off, because nothing’s been said ever since, apart from Tom Brennick at the time hinting at it. He taught her how to improve her guitar playing during the studio sessions so he’d be more likely to know whether or not she wrote it
I have nothing against Amy Winehouse. I’m just stating that she may be over-rated as an artist. Her, and the likes of Duffy – another ‘authentic’ artist were only pushed by Universal at a time when the re-cycled compilations of Motown and other 70’s soul/jazz were doing surprisingly well in 2006/07. It’s no revelation that both of them were the top runners for the majority of the awards at the time
As a fan of Hip Hop you should be the first to know that writing credits are not always correct. Just look at The Dogg Food album,. It’s just my thoughts, based on what’s been put out there already. I just think she was an already available/signed artist who fitted the mold perfectly to run with the motown revival mission Universal had at the time, it’s not hard to believe that she may have been spoon fed at times to congeal that ‘original, authentic’ image

To touch on another issue about the lack of sympathy she may be getting from some people. Here in the UK, there is a lot of hatred, and lack of sympathy for heroin addicts by the population. In this country we have the highest amount of benefit percentage per population than anywhere else in the world. If you don't work, you'll get your rent paid for you, free dental, free health care, free medicines, taxes all paid, education fee's, money with variation of value dependant on the number of children you have, as well as money for youself as well, and that's not including all the other things such as fruit and veg vouchers, clothing grants and so on... Heroin addicts are the same as above, however they get free Methadone, and can walk into a chemist whenever they like to get a shot of methadone - All at the expense of people like me - The Tax payer. They are a result of the high crime, resulting in tax paid police time and resources, they cost for the repeated hospital treatment they require, and they cost for all the courses, advice, one on one social visits, therapy, and sessions they have with doctors. All at a time when the tax payer is being hit with everything coming, rising food, fuel, tax, and energy bills, cut salaries, and everything else.
The UK is a generous country, so generous in fact that just 2 weeks ago,they allowed an illegal immagrant to stay with her 5 children because she liked the free health care and everything else handed to her for free here so much compared to Africa. This is not like America, and people can be housed, fed, and clothed with money in their pocket to live, for free - ANYBODY. There's no major poverty here, like in other countries. The type who take heroin here aren't your hopeless, and forgiving, they are societys pain the ass already, and just go onto that

They are a result of the high crime, resulting in tax paid police time and resources, they cost for the repeated hospital treatment they require, and they cost for all the courses, advice, one on one social visits, therapy, and sessions they have with doctors. All at a time when the tax payer is being hit with everything coming, rising food, fuel, tax, and energy bills, cut salaries, and everything else.

@mickavelli2001, I know what you're saying about the benefits system, and I share the same frustrations, but one thing I feel should be pointed out is that how you described the Job Seekers' Allowance isn't wholly accurate. Sure, there are definitely people who take advantage of it, and that sort of thing bugs the hell out of me too. But there's also definitely a number of people who are on it for legitimate reasons, i.e. can't find work, through no fault of their own. There willl be even more people signing on due to the high unemployment rate that's come around since the recession, and with all the cuts that are/have been taking place, more people are losing their jobs, and more positions are becoming insecure. I know this has gone somewhat off topic, I just wanted to make that point.
I also agree with what Pere's saying. Sure, on the face of it, she was a 'junkie', but there are bound to be underlying reasons for her behaviour. But regardless, any loss of life is never a good thing, I don't care who it is.
