Wu-Tang Clan & Jay Rock Debut on the Charts Yet Wu-Tang Clan and Jay Rock failed to make it into the Top 40?Posted: August 3, 2011 - 1:17 PM10 Comments Post A Comment None of the new hip-hop releases managed to crack the Top 40 this week, but Wu-Tang Clan came closest, debuting just outside at No. 41.The Wu?s latest CD, Legendary Weapons, dropped at No. 41 on the Billboard Top 200album chart, selling 10,000 copies in its first week, according to the Nielsen SoundScan report released today (August 3).
Jay Rock?s debut with Strange Music, Follow Me Home, sold 5,300 copies, resulting in the No. 83 spot. Black Rob?s Game Tested Streets Approved, the last new hip-hop release of the week, did not manage to crack the Top 200, selling 1,700 records.Bad Meets Evil, the Eminem and Royce Da 5?9?? collaboration, climbed up a spot on the charts to No. 10 with their EP Hell: The Sequel, selling 26,000 in its seventh week, making the total units sold 396,000.DJ Khaled, whose fifth album, We The Best Forever, held the fifth spot in its debut last week, fell to No. 14, selling 20,600 copies this time around, pushing his total to 73,700.Further down on the charts is G.O.O.D. Music signee Big Sean, who fell three spots this week to No. 30, trailed closely by Pitbull at No. 32. Sean?s Finally FamousLP sold 13,200 in its fifth week out, totaling 160,000 units sold. Pit?s dance infused Planet Pitalbum sold 12,500 copies this week. Shit aint to bad, but with single on tv and the good promo, expected more...Hope he stays with Strange Music, hes a good fit there and they release music, wish they sign Eastwood and Y.A and these other dope west acts that need a cd.
-
The West is back, my niggas. We all eating! 8)
-
And this is what you get for replacing Kendrick Lamar with Will.i.am on "All Of My Life".
-
Shit aint to bad,
LOL you serious?
This is terrible. lmao ;D
-
they got to make a dope video for "Finest Hour" if they want to climb the top 100 !!!
-
Shit aint to bad,
LOL you serious?
This is terrible. lmao ;D
how is it terrible? everybody knew he would do 5-10K first week
and at least he got his damn album out after all these years ::)
-
I bought it, solid album
-
Shit aint to bad,
LOL you serious?
This is terrible. lmao ;D
how is it terrible? everybody knew he would do 5-10K first week
and at least he got his damn album out after all these years ::)
The fact that the numbers were expected doesnt make them less terrible. No artist should be pleased with those numbers.

I agree to an extent but every artist has to start somewhere, gotta have that core fan base as a platform... not saying that Jay Rock will blow up like Wiz Khalifa did, but Wiz' indie album only did like 5K first week and then a year later he drops his major debut and goes Gold with Platinum singles
plus Strange Music is in it for the long run, they will push the album to sell at least 20-25K
-
5,300 is cool if its a independent album & they didnt spend much on promoteing & recording the album
-
Not bad
-
The West is back, my niggas. We all eating! 8)
With 5,300 sales during the first week?
-
that was obviously ironic lol
-
Not bad
-
That's crazy that Dom Kennedy and Kendrick sold more then jay rock the first week. Those sales would be cool of the album was sold like Dom or kendricks albums which seemed more like some do it yourself shit. But on a label like strange, with a good distro deal, billboards, etc that's not a real good look. The album is dope though.
-

I'm joking. That's fucking terrible. This is why people on here look retarded when they try to act like the Death Row days of the West will ever come back.
-
would have been worse had it not been for the backing of strange..
-
nobody is selling much music which is why smaller, hell any artists, need to make the biggest cut possible from their own sales.
-
He's with strange so he will keep selling through touring etc. Dope album so I'm glad I copped
-

yeh there is a lot more moula to be made from touring and artists having a big cut of the live revenues.
-
Pac would go platinum in a week. That's 200 times better than this lol.
-
The album is knot and I hope they keep pushing it, but the sales ain't good, and it's crazy how people are acting like it almost went gold! Yall must forgot about that wayne and ross feature, and not even from the money aspect, but from the fact those equals didn't draw more attention to the product. The public today are into swag and personality more than actual content, you need that shit to get the record buyers into yo shit yell
-
can i ask yall this, are people who used to buy gangsta rap, still buying gangsta rap today?
imo, seems like that core demographic audience found out how to download music instead of running over to the local store and picking it up.
i believe in the hardwork jayrock put in, grindin going over to meetings to get an album out etc. but when you have the new boyz outselling you, yg with the club banger, cali swag district. The type of music to make nowadays (if you plan on makin a livin in what i think is a lousy business) imo is catchy dance music. Jayrock can still cake it up off of shows and what not but dam todays market for hood rap. Shame on you hip hop
-
all those acts got a personality that these new fans feel, jay rocc is raw straight no chaser, he don't put on a act like say a william roberts or a game with his antics. We are in the act a fool age of entertainment yell
-
And this is what you get for replacing Kendrick Lamar with Will.i.am on "All Of My Life".
Dumbest post I've read on here in a while.
Anyway, if you look at stranges discography all of them have weak first week sales. They make their money off touring and slow but steady sales
-
Follow me home was a weak albm though . i tried to like it but it just fails to impress .
-

feel you box, but in games case he was riding 50 cents wave, and a cosign with Dr Dre at a very special time in hip hop. 50 had all the minds and hearts of many. Game would've never made it with JT the bigga figga. Jay rock shouldn't have to jump off the watts towers with a parachute to sell albums, but he might have to get back with those pay a fee plus shippin and handlin to gang bang bloods from the south
-
thats terrible sales, but guess wat...I DONT GIVE A FUCK...i got my copy, much respect to any new westcoast artist dropping an album. ill support all the way
-
Bad Meets Evil still under 400k?? I guess it will keep selling well with "Lighters" blowing up though, so platinum is still not totally out of the question, although it's gonna be tough.
-
maan i stoped worrying about the sales. usually nowadays the ones who sell the most suck the most 8) jay rock, snoop, k.dot all had great albums imo
-

I agree. But also the label situation Rock went through def fucked it up a bit. That's the problem with alot of labels IMO, they always try to hit new artists with a bang instead of building them up from the ground. I'm sure that Rock's album would've done better had it dropped in 2007-08 and they could've kept dropping a few albums and i'm sure he would've been a bigger name by now, but what happened was the label tried to reach a wider audience and they never caught on and so they didn't wanna invest big money for his project. But like you said Rock also doesn't have that "star potential" and neither does Kendrick, but who cares still dope artists.
-
lol, thats terrible. 5300 copies, id be embarassed. the only guy from west who could sell less than this, is Knoc-Turn' Al
-
lol, thats terrible. 5300 copies, id be embarassed. the only guy from west who could sell less than this, is Knoc-Turn' Al
Kurupt sold less than that 1st week. Mack 10, Kendrick sold maybe a couple hundred more 1st week
-
i know what ur sayin, but its still a very big fail imo. Jay Rock had an online-buzz n all, the "black hippy"-stuff wit Kendrick.. better numbers were def expected
-

Yeah Jay Rock had a buzz but no where near the level of his buzz when he first signed with Warner. Really past the Strange announcement, touring and some videos here and there, that was it. He pretty much had the album completed by the time he signed.

if you still worrying about album sales after the rescission then you trapped in the past because nobody really selling shit.. if you didn't have a big fan base before album sales went rock bottom then you ain't selling nothing. the only niggaz still selling is niggaz thats affiliated with cash money, dr dre and niggaz like that.. the real money is in touring because ain't nobody buying albums anymore. even niggaz that selling bootleg cd's can't even sell shit anymore.. when is the last time you saw a nigga on the streets selling cd's ? i use to see niggaz selling cd's on the corner almost every weekend but not anymore because everybody downloading free music on their ipod, ipads & phones.. that nigga jay rock just came off that all 7 and 6's tour so that nigga made more money than these niggaz you hearing on the radio. strange music averages over 200 tour dates a year. jay rock just came off a 3 month tour with strange so that niggaz pocket is fatter than niggaz that on majors sold more albums than he did. touring is were the money is brah.
thats money ( these strange music niggaz eating good)

True

these niggaz don't even know if you don't write your own shit you get paid last.. thats how that girl group En Vogue from Oakland went broke. baby face wrote most of their music so after they made all that money off selling millions of albums them bitches got paid last. baby face took his cut, the major label took their cut, their manager took his cut and them bitches where getting crumbs. i heard one them was working in a fast food spot at a mall now..don't get it fuck up brah a lot of these rappers selling all those albums get paid last and they have no money.. niggaz is renting everything and y'all niggaz think they own that shit son. didn't you hear they came for game's car :D i know that shit is probably no true but it just goes to show you that these dudes are not eating at good as you think they are. if you ain't touring you ain't eating brah.
all that brah and they broke
En Vogue is an American female R&B[1] vocal group from Oakland, California assembled by music producers Denzil Foster and Thomas McElroy.[2]
The group has won more MTV Video Music Awards than any other female group in MTV history, a total of seven, along with four Soul Train Awards, six American Music Awards, and seven Grammy nominations. According to Billboard Magazine they were the 18th most successful act of the 1990s, and one of the most popular and successful female groups of all time.[3] En Vogue have accumulated over 2,800 weeks on various Billboard charts.[4]

tech n9ne is eating better rick ross, game, wiz and all these other niggaz that got more fame than he does. dude takes a month break then he's back on tour. if i was any upcoming rapper im fucking with them strange music niggaz because them niggaz is touring all year every year getting money. ... fuck def jam, fuck intercope and all these majors because them niggaz gon take a big cut out of your album sales and tour money. that just how majors roll.
these strange music niggaz eating
Tech N9ne and self-made entrepreneur Travis O’Guin, Strange Music has grown into the biggest independent label in hip-hop, with annual revenues exceeding $15 million

I dont see Dom or Lamar in your sig but I do see Jay  As for Nipsey, wheres his album ???
-
Section80 did the same numbers in first week according to HHDX
-
i know what ur sayin, but its still a very big fail imo. Jay Rock had an online-buzz n all, the "black hippy"-stuff wit Kendrick.. better numbers were def expected
Did you buy the album??
na, havent even heard it yet

It dont matter whos on the cover. The overall product coming from Nipsey Hussle, Dom Kennedy & Kendrick Lamar is better than what Jay Rock has to offer. Not saying Jay Rock is wack or anything but I prefer the previous artists more so then Jay Rock. Either way, its good to see healthy competition between the new West artists.
-
It's funny, the same people in here saying sales don't matter will be the same ones in the Game thread if Game doesn't sell well, saying he flopped.
Anyway, I'm not really feeling this album. Nothing stood out for me. Just a bunch of average tracks. Rock has steadily declined (in my opinion) with each mixtape he's dropped. The rest of the TDE crew seems to have past him.
-
all those acts got a personality that these new fans feel, jay rocc is raw straight no chaser, he don't put on a act like say a william roberts or a game with his antics. We are in the act a fool age of entertainment yell

Me personally if it's knot, I'm getting it no matter what. But to be a superstar and really sale you got to appeal to a broad fan base, and those fans are band wagon ride the in thing cats. And personality or idiotic actions draw them in.
Game did ride the 50 wave but he also created a bi polar and name dropping character. Its something banks didn't do, yayo has some personality but again he's real, he won't go wwe like game and mix in alot of fiction with his realness (game is second only to pac in doing this). When you say to someone what you think of game? You will get he's a name dropper, jay z and dre stan, a clown who always does something for attention etc or he's keeping the west alive, he's dope when he makes deep songs, he got people rep'n bloods tough, he will knocc a muthafucca out etc. dude name can spark mad engaging convo and that was even from the start, yet a jay rocc will usually just get he's real, can spit, and his album is banging or not and that's it from a wide audience yell
-
in the indy game they dont ship alot of records. i was told they only shipped 8000 copies of follow me home. jay rock 5300 of those in limited stores. shipping is the bad part of being on a indy
-
I was commenting it aint regard to fact most knew hitting 10 tho would of been great, hes a new artist on a indy not being back from Akon or Wayne or some other radio artist. The albums dope i got my copy, glad a New west act actuloy got a album out, And they def messed up All my life by changing hook and having WillIam saying ghetto over and over Kendrick layed a perfect hook.... Suprised song didnt do better, his buzz was bigger at warner when he dropped Lift me up, All my life, and lots of mixtapes. They should push the track with Ross try n get more sales
-
You can't compare indy sales with major label. It's a completely different machine altogether. He's a brand new rapper with no mainstream radio or video play. Touring and word of mouth will be the big deciding factor in how well this does.
-

Really? I doubt it. In my local HMV store in Canada, there was a copy, and beleive me, there's almost nothing in the hip hop section there
-
Damn these numbers suck. Guarenteed he can push at least that through the local swap meets and out the trunk. Is the west coast really dead? Will Nipseys album ever see the day of light?
-
It's not a super great look for dude but like I said, the indy situation is different. Nobody's doing first-week promo tie-ins with the album on sale for 9.99 with a free DVD. It's just there for people to buy. I had to go to FYE and spend the full $15. Three other stores I tried before (including Best Buy) didn't have it. Let's see where the next few weeks take it.
-
better than bow wow's minuscule record sales.
-
Finally got this in the mail today, booklet, cd etc are all high quality, production credits were interesting, a lot of talented up and comers. Been playing this album a lot, "They Be On It" getting constant burn
-
Its 2011 99% of hip hop albums arnt selling, Jay Rock will make his money from touring and slowly building a fan base due to his alliance with tech.
-
it doesn't help that the album is still not out in parts of Europe,Asia and here in canada. they said it would be in canada some time this month but its not at best buy yet.

I think the album will do just fine when really get th@ generation & push going,,,If u luv good music subscribe to http://www.darksidemusic.net for 14 days of free music
-
it took me 15 minutes and a guy that worked at Best buy 10 minutes to find Follow Me Home and that was the first week the cd is out, Shoulddnt take that long to find a cd, most ppl would of gave up after 5 minutes
-
it doesn't help that the album is still not out in parts of Europe,Asia and here in canada. they said it would be in canada some time this month but its not at best buy yet.
are you really surprised an indie artist from California isn't in best buys across Europe? That's like me walking into a supermart and expecting to find an album from one of your local artists.
