I agree to an extent but every artist has to start somewhere, gotta have that core fan base as a platform... not saying that Jay Rock will blow up like Wiz Khalifa did, but Wiz' indie album only did like 5K first week and then a year later he drops his major debut and goes Gold with Platinum singles

plus Strange Music is in it for the long run, they will push the album to sell at least 20-25K

That's crazy that Dom Kennedy and Kendrick sold more then jay rock the first week.  Those sales would be cool of the album was sold like Dom or kendricks albums which seemed more like some do it yourself shit.  But on a label like strange, with a good distro deal, billboards, etc that's not a real good look.  The album is dope though.

nobody is selling much music which is why smaller, hell any artists, need to make the biggest cut possible from their own sales.

The album is knot and I hope they keep pushing it, but the sales ain't good, and it's crazy how people are acting like it almost went gold! Yall must forgot about that wayne and ross feature, and not  even from the money aspect, but from the fact those equals didn't draw more attention to the product. The public today are into swag and personality more than actual content, you need that shit to get the record buyers into yo shit yell

can i ask yall this, are people who used to buy gangsta rap, still buying gangsta rap today?

imo, seems like that core demographic audience found out how to download music instead of running over to the local store and picking it up.

i believe in the hardwork jayrock put in, grindin going over to meetings to get an album out etc. but when you have the new boyz outselling you, yg with the club banger, cali swag district. The type of music to make nowadays (if you plan on makin a livin in what i think is a lousy business) imo is catchy dance music. Jayrock can still cake it up off of shows and what not but dam todays market for hood rap. Shame on you hip hop

Dumbest post I've read on here in a while.

Anyway, if you look at stranges discography all of them have weak first week sales. They make their money off touring and slow but steady sales

feel you box, but in games case he was riding 50 cents wave, and a cosign with Dr Dre at a very special time in hip hop. 50 had all the minds and hearts of many. Game would've never made it with JT the bigga figga. Jay rock shouldn't have to jump off the watts towers with a parachute to sell albums, but he might have to get back with those pay a fee plus shippin and handlin to gang bang bloods from the south

I agree. But also the label situation Rock went through def fucked it up a bit. That's the problem with alot of labels IMO, they always try to hit new artists with a bang instead of building them up from the ground. I'm sure that Rock's album would've done better had it dropped in 2007-08 and they could've kept dropping a few albums and i'm sure he would've been a bigger name by now, but what happened was the label tried to reach a wider audience and they never caught on and so they didn't wanna invest big money for his project. But like you said Rock also doesn't have that "star potential" and neither does Kendrick, but who cares still dope artists.

Yeah Jay Rock had a buzz but no where near the level of his buzz when he first signed with Warner. Really past the Strange announcement, touring and some videos here and there, that was it. He pretty much had the album completed by the time he signed.

if you still worrying about album sales after the rescission then you trapped in the past because nobody really selling shit.. if you didn't have a big fan base before album sales went rock bottom then you ain't selling nothing. the only niggaz still selling is niggaz thats affiliated with cash money, dr dre and niggaz like that.. the real money is in touring because ain't nobody buying albums anymore. even niggaz that selling bootleg cd's can't even sell shit anymore.. when is the last time you saw a nigga on the streets selling cd's ? i use to see niggaz selling cd's on the corner almost every weekend but not anymore because everybody downloading free music on their ipod, ipads & phones.. that nigga jay rock just came off that all 7 and 6's tour so that nigga made more money than these niggaz you hearing on the radio. strange music averages over 200 tour dates a year. jay rock just came off a 3 month tour with strange so that niggaz pocket is fatter than niggaz that on majors sold more albums than he did. touring is were the money is brah.

thats money ( these strange music niggaz eating good)

nipsey hussle, dom kennedy, kendrick lamar > jay rock
I dont see Dom or Lamar in your sig but I do see Jay   As for Nipsey, wheres his album ???
It dont matter whos on the cover. The overall product coming from Nipsey Hussle, Dom Kennedy & Kendrick Lamar is better than what Jay Rock has to offer. Not saying Jay Rock is wack or anything but I prefer the previous artists more so then Jay Rock. Either way, its good to see healthy competition between the new West artists.

It's funny, the same people in here saying sales don't matter will be the same ones in the Game thread if Game doesn't sell well, saying he flopped.

Anyway,  I'm not really feeling this album.  Nothing stood out for me.  Just a bunch of average tracks.  Rock has steadily declined (in my opinion) with each mixtape he's dropped.  The rest of the TDE crew seems to have past him.

all those acts got a personality that these new fans feel, jay rocc  is raw straight no chaser, he don't put on a act like say a william roberts or a game with his antics. We are in the act a fool age of entertainment yell

Me personally if it's knot, I'm getting it no matter what. But to be a superstar and really sale you got to appeal to a broad fan base, and those fans are band wagon ride the in thing cats. And personality or idiotic actions draw them in.

Game did ride the 50 wave but he also created a bi polar and name dropping character. Its something banks didn't do, yayo has some personality but again he's real, he won't go wwe like game and mix in alot of fiction with his realness (game is second only to pac in doing this). When you say to someone what you think of game? You will get he's a name dropper, jay z and dre stan, a clown who always does something for attention etc or he's  keeping the west alive, he's dope when he makes deep songs, he got people rep'n bloods tough, he will knocc a muthafucca out etc. dude name can spark mad engaging convo and that was even from the start, yet a jay rocc will usually just get he's real, can spit, and his album is banging or not and that's it from a wide audience yell

I was commenting it aint regard to fact most knew hitting 10 tho would of been great, hes a new artist on a indy not being back from Akon or Wayne or some other radio artist. The albums dope i got my copy, glad a New west act actuloy got a album out, And they def messed up All my life by changing hook and having WillIam saying ghetto over and over Kendrick layed a perfect hook.... Suprised song didnt do better, his buzz was bigger at warner when he dropped Lift me up, All my life, and lots of mixtapes. They should push the track with Ross try n get more sales

You can't compare indy sales with major label. It's a completely different machine altogether. He's a brand new rapper with no mainstream radio or video play. Touring and word of mouth will be the big deciding factor in how well this does.

Really? I doubt it. In my local HMV store in Canada, there was a copy, and beleive me, there's almost nothing in the hip hop section there

Damn these numbers suck. Guarenteed he can push at least that through the local swap meets and out the trunk. Is the west coast really dead? Will Nipseys album ever see the day of light?

It's not a super great look for dude but like I said, the indy situation is different. Nobody's doing first-week promo tie-ins with the album on sale for 9.99 with a free DVD. It's just there for people to buy. I had to go to FYE and spend the full $15. Three other stores I tried before (including Best Buy) didn't have it. Let's see where the next few weeks take it.

Its 2011 99% of hip hop albums arnt selling, Jay Rock will make his money from touring and slowly building a fan base due to his alliance with tech.

are you really surprised an indie artist from California isn't in best buys across Europe? That's like me walking into a supermart and expecting to find an album from one of your local artists.
