HELLA releases from the West this year, seems like even more than last year... vote and discuss 8)
EDIT: if I forgot a few I'll add them ;)
-
I wouldnt call RED a West Coast album
-
Soopafly U 4Got
-
@ deuce deuce ^really? the guy had 5 west coast features on it and he's from LA enough of the "its not a west coast release because he had features like wayne, drake, lloyd and wale". It was and thats that.
cant speak for some of these haven't peeped them all. I've heard most...
but my vote went to kendrick, I really enjoyed his album, alot of great positive messages in it.
-
daz album was better than all those
-
Follow me home for the bay area side I'm going with Berner the white album
-
Section.80 & it's not even close.
-
WC for me.
Brotha is the closest, the 3rd: Techniec & L's
than E-40's double and G Malone
-
As of now , WC for me
-
AP.9 - Relentless (double album)
-
Ab Soul dropped a pretty dope album as well.
AP.9 - Relentless (double album)
Did not know AP dropped a album, gonna have to check that out. I still have the majority of those albums in rotation either in my car or at home lol.
-
LBC Crew - Haven't You Heard?
-
Had to choose Q. But Section 80 is a whisker after.
-
Did not know AP dropped a album, gonna have to check that out. I still have the majority of those albums in rotation either in my car or at home lol.
Yeah this is on another level, in my opinion! Here's one of my favorite tracks: https://www.youtube.com/v/O9ooCO1npgo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9ooCO1npgo)
-
Section.80 & it's not even close.
yeah for me as well
-
Follow Me Home
-
quik...easily out of that list..
-
On that list Follow Me Home.
Though my personal fav from the west this year (so far) would be New Boyz - Too Cool To Care...
-
Ab Soul dropped a pretty dope album as well.
AP.9 - Relentless (double album)

come on d u gota stay up on that bay tip.

It's too bad Thurz's "L.A. Riot" is not on that list. That album is very solid. There's not one track that I'd consider filler. And he's got little interview segments from people involved in the actual Riot like the "L.A. 4" who were involved in the Reginald Denny attack.
-
It's September 1st and we're already having a "...of the year"-thread? Jeeez... ::)
Anyway, I don't think there will be an album coming this year that can possibly be better than Section.80 but still I think it's too early for such a thread.

I meant to write "so far" in the thread title... fix your Tampax, "jeeeez" ::)
and damn I can't add in Soopafly or Daz lol
-
WC for me.
Brotha is the closest, the 3rd: Techniec & L's

Yeah where's Techniec & L's - Blacklist?
-
Revenge Of The Barracuda no doubt.
Follow Me Home a close second!
-
Gon go with RED. But Section 80 is right up there. With Doggumentary last
-

yup very solid album. Thurz is the homie...talented artist and you know what just a humble down to earth dude. If anyone should be supported on the west it is def him. I wish great success for him.
-

I dont really wanna turn this thread into a RED album discussion (there are enough as it is), but overall it doesn't sound like a West Coast album, theres a couple west coast tracks but it doesn't have a West Coast sound to it as a whole.
And you think it should be classed West Coast beacuse of the features?
5 West Coast features (Actually 4, I wouldnt class Snoop as a feature) but how many non West Coast features? Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross, Beans, Young Jeezy, Wale. Thats less West Coast features. But as I said its how it sounds overall.
-

yeah thats a good album, I need to listen to it again.

It doesn't matter what kinda sound the album has or what features it has. It's still a West Coast release.
-
Should include Tyler The Creator up on that list even tho most of the heads on here dont like the kid but he's one of the biggest la rappers to make it without the nwa tree branch invovled
-

For real, one of the biggest west coast albums this year. I'd go with kendrick though, still getting the most burn from me
-

So Ice-T's Cop Killer is West Coast?
or are gonna excuse that one because its not a solo record
-
Section.80 & it's not even close.
-
1.) Im Gay
2.) Section 80
3.) Overtime/Graveyard Shift
4.) Book Of David
5.) Goblin
Need to hear that Soopafly album, though!
-
Strong Arm Steady for sure, you can't go wrong with Madlib production...
-
Section .80
Follow Me Home
Doggumentary
R.E.D.
-
Oh, shit forgot about Tyler's album. That has song dope ass joints all over it.
-
Section 80 of course...red n book of David r dope tho
-
dammit I forgot Tyler too :-X
overall that album was ok, but it had some of my favorite songs of this year (ex: "Golden")
-
Soopafly - Best Kept Secret....easily
And if that's not a "West Coast" release, i don't know what is....He's a West Coast artist and that CD bangs hard.
-
I need to hear both D.A.Z. and Best Kept Secret lol
*consults Google*
-
Gotta say my nigga HD - Emotional Bout My Guap - Bearfaced, HD - Extortion Muzik Vol. 3: The Caution Tape new nigga outta North Oakland (Ice City) brah be spittin real nigga shit
-
So Ice-T's Cop Killer is West Coast?
or are gonna excuse that one because its not a solo record
Ice-T represents the West Coast and he's considered West Coast, even though he was born in New Jersey. It don't matter what sound albums have if they are released by an artist from the West Coast, they are West Coast releases.
-
It's a toss-up between Kendrick and Game. Q is right behind them, that "Setbacks" surprised the hell out of me.
Also enjoyed Quik's, Ab-Soul's, and that's about it.
I also don't understand how Tyler, The Creator can't be mentioned on this. It's like as soon as someone from the Coast gets mainstream recognition on this forum, they forget about them and/or hate on them (see Game and Tyler).
-
1. Soopafly
2. Snoop Dogg
3. DJ Quik
4. Daz
5. WC
I don't anticipate anything coming out and changing my Top 5 except maybe that 1st Generation if that ever drops
-
Mr slow flow album gonna be very good but very few here will check since it's not G Funk/Gangsta rap... what ever happened to Xzibit new album ? I guess it has fallen in the Detox category aswell ...
-
what ever happened to Xzibit new album ?

The E-40 & Too $hort duo album?

yeah, really lookin' forward to the 'cats & dogs' album , that is gonna be the one to beat as far as I'm concerned based of the sampler and snippets I've heard
-
Kendrick Lamar - Section 80
Strong Arm Steady - Arms & Hammers
DJ Quik - The Book of DaviD
Soopafly - Best Kept Secret
-
Goblin
-

You didn't answer the question
-
It's actually some tough calls on this one... Doggumentary and R.E.D. are suprisingly great to me. Quik's shit never quite grew on me like his past albums. I'm really digging Jay Rock and have yet to pick up Beach Cruiser.
-
can we get Soopafly added to the list?...and Daz too
-
1. Soopafly
2. Snoop Dogg
3. DJ Quik
4. Daz
5. WC
I don't anticipate anything coming out and changing my Top 5 except maybe that 1st Generation if that ever drops
You obviously don't listen to any new Westcoast music. Everyone you named is someone that's been out for 20+ years, and then you named 1st Generation.
-
If efrain's remaster of Haven't You Heard counts, then that one, easily. If that doesn't count (and honestly, I don't think it should ;D) then it's a tough call...
Maybe Red Album, believe it or not, but not because of any particular song(s) on it, but for the entire album experience compared to the others on the list. (That's not saying much). Having said that, the best songs from album choices on the list for me are from D.A.Z. with Still Get'n Money and No Hand Outs or Favors, and W.C.'s Hustla and What's Good (the latter is probably song of the year so far). I also love "Nobody" by Quik and "Take You Home" and "This Weed is Mine" from Snoop ... but since this thread is about overall album rather than individual songs, I have to look at the overall album experience. Snoop, W.C. and Daz's albums had too much filler and tracks I didn't like for them to be albums of the year.
Also, I should mention I haven't heard Best Kept Secret in full yet.
-
section 80 by far
-
1. Soopafly
2. Snoop Dogg
3. DJ Quik
4. Daz
5. WC

*face palm*
section 80 can be considered best album of the year period. section 80 > watch the throne
-
section 80 can be considered best album of the year period.
loooooooooooooool
-
it's between brotha lynch and quik..kendrick gets way 2 much love on this board compared to other artists just as good and better
-
i cant vote at the moment. but, i will next week. anyway, im going with quik. have not heard the others or even the daz or soopfly album. wait, i do have the snoop album. and prolly heard a few tracks off the wc and efourty. however, quiks album is fucking amazing. imo. good thread op. this thread gave me a list of albums to peep out. thks.
-
I honestly don't feel Kendrick gets too much love on this forum - I feel it's totally appropriate. It's not just this forum showing him love - it's Snoop, Game, Dre, Kurupt, and all the other legends popping up at his show calling him the new King of The West. There's a reason for all of this. NIKCC, have you even given his albums a proper listen? His substance is so much deeper than any emcee out at the moment, forget the Westcoast, I mean period. How Brotha Lynch can be mentioned in the same sentence as Kendrick is beyond me.
Btw, checked some of your material. Was digging the Freddy song. Just for a note, if you're gonna use an acronym for "L.A.M.B.", always put a period after the final initial as well :)

I dunno, I think Kendrick is good, but not spectacular. I dunno if u dig Lynch's shit, but he's a NorCal legend, and his recent albums have been straight heat. Did you like "DAAM" and "CHS"?

good looks on checkin the shit out...but yea, acronyms don't always need a period at the end. remember NWA?

Do some people just not understand the positive messages in kedricks songs? He's very uplifting/trying to pave the way for the young kids. Its awesome, nobody does shit like that, game will always have 1-2 songs on an album where he's on that level. Kendrick just dropped a whole album like that. Impressive. Wish more guys would rap like that.

His style obviously stands out with all the attention he's getting. I find his whole presence and delivery original as fuck, no one else sounds like Kendrick, and he has the flow and content to back it up. Each to their own though, Brotha Lynch obviously makes music that's more suited to your taste, they're completely different artists really.
-
I dont feel Kendrick Lamar at all, that album wasn't that great, i'd say Soopafly's new album...SHIT was flyyy! and Jay Rocks Follow Me Home, was far the best albums this year, You can't forget Doggumentary aswell much loove to snoop D O

sure i do...Mykestro, Problem, Lil Eazy E, Curtis Young, Glasses Malone, Killa Krock, Bishop Lamont, Nipsey Hustle...unfortunately, most of New West Artists that actually make West Coast Music don't have deals...I listened to Tyler, Jay Rock, The Game, Glasses, & Kendrick but none of them would i nominate for top 5 album of the year...Tyler's album is pure garbage, Kendrick's album sounds like something Talib Kweli would make which is cool and all but im not bumping it in the ride or at the gym, Game is trying to appease the college kids which is working cause his shits selling, plus if he had used most of the tracks he leaked and wasted on mixtapes his album could have been classic, i expected more out of Jay Rock & Glasses because both of their albums were suppose to come out 6-7 years ago but both have tracks i bump regularly...to sum it ...,most New West artists don't make music for me, they trying to make what hot on the radio and whats hot at the clubs...and every artists in my top 5 makes music from their heart (even Snoop did on this record), they all said fuck radio play im making music for me and my real fans... 8) 8) 8) 8)

LBC Crew - Haven't You Heard?
Ha! I like that! That was dope, finally getting to hear that album after all of these years.
-
Section 80 is album of the decade.
-

Revenge of the Barracuda - 8.5/10
Doggumentary - 7.5/10
Book of David - 7.5/10
Follow Me Home - 7.5/10
The R.E.D. Album - 7.5/10
The Beach Cruiser - 7/10
Arms & Hammers - 7/10
Doggumentary was a pretty dope album from Snoop
-
So basically, if they don't make 90's gangbanging music, it's not "Westcoast" music?
-

i can't believe theres even a debate about this.
-
Horseshoe Gang - Firing Squad is right up there
-
It's too bad Thurz's "L.A. Riot" is not on that list. That album is very solid. There's not one track that I'd consider filler. And he's got little interview segments from people involved in the actual Riot like the "L.A. 4" who were involved in the Reginald Denny attack.
THIS. Lotta people sleeping on Thurz. Crazy because you figure this forum would jump all over a concept album about one of the biggest moments of the 90s and an artist who pays homage to N.W.A. Co$$ also deserves a mention.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zVzTDkkYhA
If you like this song check out the album, its filled with songs of the same quality.
-
wheres Murs & Terrace Martin-Melrose?
Sorry but that album sucked. And I like both of them.

Talk about over exaggerating...
Outside of USA and probably the LA area not many people look at those riots as a significant moment in modern day history. In fact: I bet that if I would ask around about those riots very few have even heard of them.

lol are you joking? You can't possible be that ignorant. You're saying the Rodney King case wasn't a big deal? Maybe if you're from Europe. But being fans of 90s gangsta rap from California I assume it would be a huge deal for you.

Im just wondering why havn't anybody talked about Richie Rich's 2011 album "Town Bidness Volume 2"? I thought it was fly as hell....Maybe someone did make a thread or something about it but i havnt seen anything..It should be on the poll!! 8) 8)

^yea...it wasnt the best, but it should be on the list over a lot of those albums...g-macc as well.

Don't worry about me. I'm educated on the subject... but your interpretation of my reply wasn't right, but maybe I should've been clearer knowing you would respond first.

what ever happened to Xzibit new album ?
and what about the history channel?!
The E-40 & Too $hort duo album?
There are probably people posting on this board who weren't alive when that album was initially announced. I think the follow-up to Detox might come out before that one.
-
wheres Murs & Terrace Martin-Melrose?
Sorry but that album sucked. And I like both of them.
:puke:
biggest disapointment of the year. i wasnt even xpecting a masterpice, cuz it was hyped as "funny, ign'ant, feel-good" music.. but the album is just blatantly horrible.. d music was generic trash, and Murs' "party"-rhymes were embarrsing

I know what you meant to say. You'd like to point out that random people in Europe might not know or care about the L.A. riots. But keep in mind you are on a forum dedicated to an American music genre, specifically from the region of California. And that its members are obsessed with the music that came out during the 90s. The L.A. Riots were a huge deal in America, the Rodney King incident and all that has followed has been engrained in pop culture through music, television, etc. When I'm sitting in my California home posting on a forum dedicated to American music, what's significant to some random dude in Europe is the furthest thing from my mind.

definitely gets my vote for most disappointing album of the year....that and that Tyler cd....
