Now that there are only two and a half weeks left this year, it's time to ask the obligatory qquestion thats asked at the end of every year: Which is your favorite album from the west coast in 2011?
I'd also like to have a discussion going, so it would be nice, if you could drop a comment when you have voted and why you have voted that particular record. If it's an album not on this list, then tell us why it deserves to be on there.
My choice would clearly be Kendrick Lamar's "Section.80". He is what the west coast needed, hungry, talented, ambitious and he actually drops a message. The beats on Section.80 reach from mellow and laid-back to modern and pop-ish flavored cuts as well as jazz-funk and old school sounding songs. His delivery and style is the best I have heard in a long time. Although he is a lot different and I don't want to compare him, he reminds me a lot of Tupac in some ways. He stands out and seems to have his own view of things and doesn't bother with regular rapper's dreams. So to me, Section.80 deserves the title "Best West Coast Rap Album 2011".

Either:
*Del Tha Funkee Homosapien - Golden Era
or
*New Boyz - Too Cool To Care
-
i liked yugi sumimoto's rap album
-
I liked the DJ Quik albums and the new music from Terrace Martin. Doggumentary was cool as well... There's an album I can't wait to hear and that is, not west coast though, Common's new album. Everything he dropped so far is really tight, so I'm really looking forward to that one :)
-
Section80, rap album of the year. I have enjoyed other album that are on the list as well.
-
3. Thurz/Techniec (tie)

dude that describes all but 5 names on this list. If he's going to list 15 other anonymous monotone underground rappers, he might as well include the ones I like, right? Let me guess though, you thought Snoop or Game had the best album of the year, since those are the only ones people were talking about outside of the internet.
-
DAZ album has a few dope tracks .
2011 was a not a good year for the westcoast in term of quality
i like jay rock but i dont feel the beats , sounds very east coast
-
I think Section 80 and Quiks are tied for first, but I voted Quik.

Both of those albums were absurd garbage. They offended me on a personal level with there wackness.
-
Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa - Mac & Devin Go To High School, was a nice suprise tho not the top west album but still it was soo smooth....some nice g funk tracks in there, as i wrote i voted jay rock for sure he a real westcoast saviour this was a good year for west cmon dont hate
-
Thurz - LA Riot
-
Section80 - but I guess I gotta check out this Thurz guy now.
-
I dont trust these fools on the message board....i wont check on thurz
-
from what i've heard its
#1 quik
and honourable mention to Murs, a great little album and my second favourite. i enjoyed both Murs rapping and Ski Beatz production on there, very cohesive and funky enough to keep me bobbin. but quik's production is on a whole other level to most music.
Luv Of My Life for track of the year :bandit:

You should break it up into major releases vs minor/independent
Usually big difference in sound and production... Half those weren't even on my radar but maybe I'll give em a shot.

Nah, the west coast already is a minority imo, so it doesn't matter if I split it into Snoop / Game / E-40 vs. the rest. It's only about how good the music is on these records, no matter if there's more money behind the production or not. Overpolished production doesn't necessarily mean good music.

There's literally only two major releasees though
-
I didn't vote, but the only albums I played more than once were these...
Quik - book of David
Ab-soul - longterm mentality
Lil b - I'm gay
Jay rock
Kendrick
Gotta go quik 1 and ab-soul second. Quik is my guy from day one, great album great beats, lyrics soso on some cuts. Absoul great album, want more from that dude

Three by my count, but close enough.

is the Erk Tha Jerk and Ab-Soul shit any good? and is it like 20 songs?
i like the artists,
but i dont want any more longass albums tho (too much music to keep up wit these days)
-
Soopafly - Best kept secret...was full of bangers...AOTY IMO 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)
-

The beats on Erk's were better than on the prequel, so you may should give it a try.
As for your posting of a Messy Marv in such a thread in the year 2011 you got to be insane though. I'm not saying anything about the beats, he used to have dope beats in all these years. But himself got fucked up badly. That's no artist to me.
-
WC Revenge of the Barracuda 8) OG Daddy V - The Original Hustla 8) and Chillafornia by The Chill 8)
-
No Glasses Malone?
-
You should include all the other West Coast mixtapes from 2011 too, since you included "War Music" on it.
-
Lol at mentioning Messy Marv. This is why I don't take some of your opinions on music seriously. Beats are important, but if you mention Messy Marv in a favorite album thread you may as well give Soulja Boy's music a chance.
-
I voted Soopafly. Kendrick would have been but I just didn't find the album great. Granted it was solid, and good "quality" music, I just aint into that alternative Hip Hop sound. I think too many on the forum jump on the band waggon with that one though
Jay Rock not far behind
-
For Me It's A Tie Between Schoolboy Q's Setbacks & Kendrick Lamar's Section 80.....But I Voted For Setbacks!!
As Of Today Mistah Fab's 'I Found My Backpack' Is Def In My Top Releases This Year!!
Slept On IMO: 'Zumbi (of Zion I) - Versus'
-

On the production tip, true. STILL, there is good and bad beats, period. DJ Premier doensn't have polished sounding production but his beats are fuckin dope! And for the most part everyone is hating on Doggumentary but that album has beats. On a big budget album they have the $$ to buy beats from established beat-makers.
I'm sorry but beats makes up 50% (at least) of all rap music so if you leave that shit out, then you basically got some dope ass rhymes that could be a freestyle. I hate listening to albums with shitty or no mastering/mixing jobs. I previewed a few songs off of Kendrick Lamars album and was not impressed by the beats at all. SOunded like a different artist compared to the fire he spit on Game's The CIty.
-
no one have mentioned big hutch only God can judge me .. solid album but not on the ATL's level !
and yeah , you should include mixtapes, nowadays ,some local and unknown rapper can make better music than big name
-
The Locksmith album was slept on. I think only a couple people from here even listened to it. lol Lock needs to get a cosign from a legend to get some attention.
-
Shit, I definitely forgot to put Big Hutch's album on the list, same went for Dom Kennedy's record (even though the lyrics are ass). As for some of the albums you've mentionend, e.g. Locksmith or Zumbi, I haven't even heard of those records. Again, to anyone who thinks Messy's album should be on the list, well I never thought anyone would seriously put a record of him past 2007 in any list regarding good or quality music.
As for the claim of some records I put on the list to be mixtapes: I don't know... nowadays it's not really clear what a mixtape, a street album, an EP or an LP is anymore. People and artists drop those terms like girls drop panties inna strip club. I figured Slim's record to be something more like an album because it is produced like one. I consider everything a mixtape that's got dj's yelling on it.
-
a mixtape called troubleman by 9th wonder's artist from oakland GQ.

and maybe also for some of those who did..

Not really the best year for the west coast. Or maybe I've just missed the really good albums...
Voted for Kendrick.
