Thought this'd be a funny topic..
What songs best illustrate the use of a Flexatone? (that classic metallic DOOOOOOOOOOOOINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGG)
From what I can recall lots of early to middle-era Death Row stuff (Doggstyle/Dogg Food/Above The Rim OST)
I'll start off with one..
Tha Dogg Pound - Dogg Pound 4 Life - nice bit around 4:30 but some throughout
also, there's a video somewhere of (I think) J-Flexx & Barney Rubble using one in a studio (NOT in the Who Been There, Who Done That video)
I remember seeing it but can't remember when/where.. maybe on one of the dpg or death row dvds - possibly one of the ones daz put out.

the first time i remembered noticing that sound prevelantly through out a whole album was on the superfly soundtrack (curtis mayfield) i was like "thats the same noise on been there done that."

theres a tray dee song that has it real heavy at the beginning of the song...i forget the name of that shit though all i know is after the flexatone then you hear a chorus of hoodrats singing "la la la la lalalala la la la la lalalala" i wanna say its i beex the hardest but i just cant recall for sure.

That was part of the west coast traditional sound aside, the winey hi-pitched synths. though producers like Hutch, Dre etc.. fight for credit on who started those sounds, it came from the original funk era (P-Funk, Bootsy and 70's all that.

The G-Funk era is nothing more then a Derived of the P-Funk Era. The difference is they just slowed the tempo If I remember correctly. But aint nothing about the G-Funk Era is original, its just a combination of a variety of different scenes to form a new sound.
and @ the OP, The GTA San Andres Theme uses one in the beginning also. that and the synth were my favorite elements of the old school sound. 8)

Heard it used the other day on 'Crazy' by Snoop Dogg, after Snoop's second verse. I'm fairly sure I heard it on Biggie's 'Sky's The Limit' as well.

Snoop Dogg - 'Watcha Gonna Do' and also 'Midnight Love'.
There should also be a list of songs that use that effect that sounds like something being wound up, like on Warren G's 'And Ya Don't Stop'. I'm sure I've heard that used in quite a few songs too.
