I'm sure this thread has been done a million times but fuck it, Imma toss it out one more time since I bumped a bunch of DPG today (the 3 albums I'm discussing).
I'm not really counting 2002 or Tha Last of Tha Pound either since neither was official
To me though, this is a pretty tough decision honestly.
"Dillinger & Gotti" was such a dope album with Mike Dean's heavy involvement. It gave the production a whole new sound for real. Not too many tracks stand out though, it's just dope as a collective.
"Dillinger & Gotti II" was good too, it was nice to have them back together. Tracks like "DPGC Muzic", "What U Gone Do" and "Push Bacc" are head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion.
And of course, "Cali Iz Active" was a really nice record that brought DPG some attention beyond the usual fanbase. The single had great promo and the video was so dope to see with such unity. To have Battlecat, Soopafly, LT Moe, Lady of Rage & RBX repping the west coast was dope, and then a little beyond that with David Banner, Swizz Beats, Paul Wall, Bangladesh, Jazze Pha & Diddy. But my favorite tracks were definitely the west coast flavored ones.
With all that said, I guess I can't even answer my own question lol, even after listening to those 3 albums just now back to back to back.
What's your favorite DPG album besides Dogg Food?
Sidenote:
Dogg Chit was pretty damn dope too. That had some nice promo too, with the "Vibe" video being on 106 and what not. I'm not sure if I'd rank it up there with these 3 releases, but I just may do that with another listen later tonight.
I didn't really bump "That Was Then, This Is Now" or "100 Wayz" enough, but I will do that soon.

i like dogg chit a lot

I listened to Dillinger & Young Gotti the other day for the first time in about 6-7 years. It really is a solid album with some filler. Kurupt really carried Daz throughout that entire album, although Daz had the better solo song (Here We Are). Dogg Chit was pretty cool too but when you compare it to the trash they released before/after it, its not hard to have a standout album when thats the competition.
Its a shame those 2 are so done. I really thought one day they'd pick it back up, kinda how Mobb Deep is doing right now. But unfortunately, the Dogg Pound is DONE. I honestly don't even bother downloading their new shit anymore.

Yea, Dillinger & Gotti is just a solid album all around like I said. Hard to pick stand out tracks on here.
Dogg Chit was pretty dope based off memory and not that long ago, so I think it's kind of unfair to say they're all trash nowadays.
I'm curious to hear the new mixtape.

while it was an enormous letdown Cali Iz active is probably my next favorite
Dogg Chit was solid but felt like a step back, regurgitating the past and offering little innovation or authenticity
Really though for a longtime duo they have a pretty shitty catologue, even Dogg Food was a disappointment when released, in places like here its probably a classic but the reality is heads were expecting much more from them.
In 92 folks were expecting Kurupt to become something special. In 2012 we just hope he doesnt embarass himself with his next track
-
Im voting for 2002, it had all Dogg Pound tracks on it and was released on Deathrow so to me its offical lol!
But to be honest ive never really listned to alot of new rap music since 2002 so ive not heard any of the later DPG albums.
Kurrupt & Young Gotta was a decent album although i find myself only listning to around 4 or 5 tracks from it. I really like "Coastin", its kind of a weak
track Dog Pound wise but i like the beat and think they both flow well on it
-
Dillinger & Young Gotti and it's not even close for me...
mostly Death Row/DPG records material reworked by Daz, Mike Dean & Blaqthoven. can't go wrong. very good production. cohesive sound from start to finish. scarce but dope features (Slip Capone, Beanie Sigel, Xzibit, Roscoe). all types of vibes (party tracks, street tracks, g-funk tracks, "inspirational" type songs, uptempo, sex songs lol).
the chemistry between Daz & Kurupt on the mic is as good as it gets, on songs like "coastin'", "we about to get fucc'd up", "u just a B.I.T.C.H.", "there's someway out", "how many", and Daz is actually pretty good on most songs. i like especially his verse on "we livin gangsta like", "best run", "at night", "shit happens", "my heart don't pump no fear".
Dogg Food & Dilli & Gotti are the only two DPG albums worth checkin from start to finish. the rest is pretty much hit or miss, or sounds forced. Dilli & Gotti is material when they still sounded fresh since most of the material originally comes from the death row era.
i don't think Dilli & Gotti is that far from Dogg Food. Dogg Food is an indisputed classic because of Dre's involvement, and the fact that it was released during Death Row's heyday, while Dilli & Gotti was released independently so people didn't pay attention as much (it still sold something like 200k i think) but music wise it's very dope.

cali iz active and i really like dogg chit and tha dillinger and young gotti albums

even Dogg Food was a disappointment when released, in places like here its probably a classic but the reality is heads were expecting much more from them.

-
Dogg Food got bad reviews when it was released, but so did Doggystyle
-
Dillinger & Young Gotti
It just had a lot of new production not just from Daz but also with Mike Dean's added touch, it was just an all new sound for them. I'm pissed that I accidentally broke the CD itself maybe 9-10 years ago. I really liked the beats of that one song with Beanie Sigel and also How Many.

The reality about that album is it was the #1 album in the country. "Let's Play House" and "New York, New York" were all over MTV at the time. Plus it got favorable reviews and went double platinum.

Yup. I don't remember it being a letdown in anyone's eyes at the time. EVERYBODY liked it -- Let's Play House was a huge club single that everybody fucked with, plus New York New York got a ton of radio play too.
-
On point with the "Dillinger & Young Gotti" comments, album was solid throughout, great production and Kurupt was killing it. Only a couple tracks that really stood above the rest. Dope album though.
I'd probably go with "Dillinger & Young Gotti", "Dogg Chit" was cool but like some people said it sounded like a step backwards into the same old territory. I never really gave "Cali Iz Active" that much of a listen, can't really remember the majority of the tracks. "100 Wayz" was actually pretty dope from what I remember.
-
the compilation Daz put out when he was beefin wit Kurupt - "the last of tha pound", the stolen DAT-reel transfers were not good quality-wise, but some of the best material Dogg Pound ever recorded is on that compilation.
(-->like "jakkmove", "Started", "we r them dogg pound gangstaz" etc etc :)
"dogg food" and "last of tha pound" are the only essential releases (if u have to own somethin from DPG on CD)
"dillinger & young gotti" is also a very good album (at least cohesively)

gangsta rap is not a classic, let alone change the game remix. it was nice to hear the Pound with Jay-Z but the song wasn't a classic, it was good for what it was, a nice little remix.
2002 has too many recycled songs (Way Too Often, Feels Good, It's All About That Money, Your Gyrlfriend 2) and unfinished songs (Livin Tha Gangsta Life)... it has classics (every single day, roll wit us, just doggin remix, don't stop) and very good songs (smoke, whatcha about, 10 til midnight) but it clearly lacks consistency and cohesiveness... it's more of a compilation. just another rushed, poorly put together project.

I'm very confused as too why people are writing off Dogg Chit due to "a step back" and offers "little innovation." No offense, but some of y'all are talking as if DPG is like Talib Kweli or something LOL. Since when was THAT a step back from there usual subject matter of pussy, weed and gang banging? And I'm not saying that as a diss, I love DPG and if I'm listening to them, it's not because I wanna hear some "innovation."
You know what you get when you listen to DPG, and Dogg Chit was them doing that as close to their best as possible nowadays.

You know what you get when you listen to DPG, and Dogg Chit was them doing that as close to their best as possible nowadays.
with DIlli & Gotti they came with an updated sound, but still sounded like they were in their prime. that was in 01 when westcoast artists were still semi-relevant in the wake of Dre's 2001. 99-01 was like the second golden age for dpgc, when they dropped quality music in good quantity (Tha Streetz, R.A.W., Tha Eastsidaz, Deuces N Trayz, Space Boogie, Dilli & Gotti. they sounded hungry and sincere.
Dogg Chit has some very good production, but it came out in 07 and the way I see their state of mind when making this album (and subsequent releases) is "well we're running out of ideas, we're past our prime and we can't evolve sonically and lyrically, but we still gotta get paid so let's do an album about the same old things"... the thing is when i listen to this album it doesn't come across as sincere, the beats are decent, or good, or even very good but it sounds like their heart are not in it anymore, they just do their routine with no intention to update their formulas, and in the end , it's just boring and sounds forced. and tbh it's always been this way since they reunited pretty much, the only outstanding Dogg Pound songs where they sounded really fresh after they got back together was Push Bacc, the energy is crazy, and Money on my Mind, this song is a masterpiece in terms of production (scott storch), and chemistry between the two. other than that, i don't know. and that's what I loved about Public Enemies, Daz came with a different sound with that album, it's still g-funk but it's updated and it sounds legit. whereas D.A.Z. have very good production as well but it sounds cliché and forced.

and i just love that DJ quik production on safe...

"All Eyez on Me" is a classic, but it isn't as consistent as "Dogg Food"...if it was narrowed down to 1 disc, it probably woulda been on the same level, though.

change the game has 2 dope jay-z verses mixed with Kurupt, Beans and Bleek rapping and Daz being the hype man with his recycled lyrics
everyone on that song did their shit and Jay's verses were better than his regular version

It is a compilation, Daz and Kurupt had left Death Row already when the shit came out. "Dat Whoopty Woop" was supposed to be released on Death Row, that's why "2002" has those Soopafly songs on it. "R.A.W." was supposed to be released on Death Row also or at least the material was recorded while they were on Death Row, that's why "2002" has songs from that album also.
-
yeah i know those are death row songs, never said they weren't. but the fact that the album is merely a compilation rather than an actually cohesive album like Dilli & Gotti (which contains mostly death row material too, but remixed and re-worked), and also the fact that when it was released, a lot of songs were already available don't make it a very solid Dogg Pound album like Dilli & Gotti is to me.

"best/better album"
"best/better era"
"this vs that"
"that vs this"
goes to show how much we have to talk about on this forum nowadays

lmao at Nik saying Dogg Food is better than Straight Outta Compton or Death Certificate. Also I know for a fact you've never listened to Souls of Mischief, The Pharcyde or Blu. Cavvy is on point with almost all of his list.
-
yeah i can't see NIK knowing pharcyde...he grew up on horrorcore/hardcore raps

lmao...right. i was bumpin pharcyde since before u knew u were gay "bizarre ride" > "labcabin"... "dogg food" has much better production than all those albums combined. "straight outta compton" aint even NWA's best album, and "death certificate" is a classic, but i still prefer "dogg food"....if u dont think "dogg food" is a classic, u dont deserve to listen to west coast hip-hop.

rapsody listens to illogic, eyedea and blueprint, not west coast shit

After "I Don't Like To Dream About Gettin' Paid", with the exception of "A Doggz Day After Noon", the album slowed down and in my opinion "If We All" and "Some Bomb Azz" could have been completely left out. As far as "what albums are better" or "more of a classic" that's a matter of opinion but there are a lot of arguably classic albums (depending who you ask) that "could" be ahead of Dogg Food but will they win a popularity contest agains Dogg Food? Probably not, Death Row had that shit on lock back then. Here's a few more albums .
Warren G - Regulators
Eazy-E - Eazy-Duz-It
Tupac - Me Against The World
DJ Quik - Rhythm-Al-Ism
Mack 10 - Mack 10

Nik Im not saying Dogg Food was a weak album, it was a very good album, but to me, because the second half of the album it doesnt have classic status

imo labcabincalifornia is slightly better. Better beats involved. I would put both above Dogg Food though. Its a good album, but has too many filler songs to be considered a classic. No way it touches Death Certificate. Even 2001 is a better album. Efil4zaggin has brilliant production but there's not one song on there on the level of Straight Outta Compton, Gangsta Gangsta, or Fuck tha Police.
-
i can actually see why Oven Dodger prefers Negro's 4 Life over Straight Outta Compton....it was much better production wise and had some evil sounding songs on it like "approach to danger" amongst others 8)
-
Nik prefers the message of One Less Bitch to Fuck the Police
-
really now, comparin "Dogg Food" wit an album like "Labcabincalifornia" is kinda farfetched dontu think? ???
both albums are great in they own right, but it depends on what ur subjectivty look like.
-
there is no filler on "dogg food", album bumps front to back
-

Yet it still is no All Eyez On Me....production wise or lyrically.
now, if dogg food was a Kurupt solo then that'd be a different story. but Daz drags the lyricism down a bit.

Disc 1 of All Eyez On Me is just a jumble of songs (great but of varying quality), disc 2 is the same but less good.
Dogg Food is a tighter, more coherent album than AIOM...not by much, but better IMO. Just my 2 cents.
-
Daz raps tight on "Dogg Food", u can tell a lot of it was written by Kurupt..
-
yeah most def, Kurupt said he & Snoop wrote most of Daz's stuff during the early days. and it ain't like AEOM is the most lyrical effort by 2pac, a lot of ignorant/gangsta type of verses.
-
Kurupt said that when he was beefin with Daz, right?
-
yeah and i don't think he was lying that time, cause it makes sense, the way daz raps on Respect and Let's Play House. Kurupt gave names of specific songs, i think he mentioned Let's Play House
I found the interview.
When did Daz come into the picture?
Kurupt: Daz was his little cousin. He came back out here from Oklahoma. Came out to Longbeach. He came up to fuck with Snoop, he was more or less DJing. Snoop was writing his raps, that's how he got to rapping. Snoop wrote his raps for The Chronic, put his cousin all in. But he was coming up with all kinds of shit like Rat-tat-tat. He was tight! Before he turned into a BITCH!
Kurupt: Snoop used to write the majority of Daz' raps, till I taught him how to kill that mic. After I taught him how to kill the mic, he was writing on his own, but on Dogg Food, on the "Dogg Pound Gangsta, DPG" I wrote that. It's alot of records I wrote for Delmar. Like "Let's Play House." I seen someone on [Westcoastrydaz.com] posted "Why was Warren G taken off Let's Play House?" [laughs] Warren G was never on Let's Play House man!
http://www.accesshiphop.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-13068.html
see even though Kurupt's mad he doesn't seem to be exaggerating, but he's wrong about let's play house though lol.
Also, on an unrelated note, i'm pretty sure Kurupt wrote "i don't hang" for Soopafly. it just sounds too much like Kurupt.
-
^yea, soopafly has had ghostwriters, as well....but with "dogg food", it's pretty obvious kurupt wrote 90% of it.
-

If One by One, If We All Fuc, and Some Bomb Azz Pussy aren't filler, I don't know what is. It's a solid west coast album but not a classic.

lmao...one by one filler? bomb azz pussy, probably the greatest pussy song ever.... filler?? rof! well, i understand why someone like urself would hate songs about pussy. that really comes as no surprise. but lets be realistic here, my dude.

My bad. I'd rather be out getting pussy than sitting in my room listening to Daz talking about busting a nut. To each their own though.

and i rather have a lovely day than sit around listenin to twdy rappin about havin one, doesn't stop me from enjoyin the song, fruitcup.
people typically enjoy songs they can relate to...u do not relate to gettin pussy. it comes as no surprise at all that u skip "bomb azz pussy" on "dogg food"
-
There is absolutely no way 'One By One' is filler. Kurupt rips that song to shreds.
"Super supreme, I plot schemes like Stephen King..."
-
Who is that nigga on Dogg Food at the end of track 2.... "This is monsta poo from gayside gangs... when can I speak to EAZY DICK?!" That shit makes me laugh everytime I hear it... and that nigga on tha toilet hahah
