Title: Songs You Hated As A Kid But Like As An Adult
Post by: Smokin Briccz on October 06, 2012, 09:01:04 PM
So....This song came out shortly after I graduated high school. At the time, I was 19 or 20 and I hated it, but now, in my early 30s, I like it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpbreN4QdnE

Even the pop shit like this from back in the day shits on 99% of mainstream hip hop nowadays.

If I wouldve known what hip hop would become, videos like the one I posted wouldnt have been so bad back then lol.

Anyone else got songs they hated as a kid but like as an adult? Post em up.

i feel pretty much the same...nelly, ja rule, cash money, no limit, trick daddy all the commercial pop-rap that was comin out in the late 90s, i usually wasnt really feelin too much. if that shit came out nowadays, it would actually be a breath of fresh air. lookin back, some of that stuff actually seems classic in comparison to the current state of mainstream hip-hop.

While I didn't exactly "hate" this song, I always fell asleep whenever I heard it (mostly during the credits to Good Burger). Nowadays it's one of the top 10 played songs my iPod :).

I disagree with a lot of the tracks/artists mentioned in this thread.  Mase, Ja Rule, Cash Money, No Limit, Trick Daddy and all that shit is wack in any era.  I admit they may get a catchy tune every now and then, like Mase first solo album had quality production and a dope sound.  But good hip-hop music is more than just a good sound.  It's also what the artist stands for, their integrity, and the effect their music has on the life of the listener.

Chocolate cake may taste good, but you can't be eating chocolate cake everyday without getting fat and sick.   Some of that music may sound good but it's not good for the soul.

of course, ur not gunna get substance with mainstream artists, even from the 90s....but some of that shit was hard, well-produced, and some nice shit to ride to. specifically no limit and cash money- they had their share of banegrs. the production shits on the stuff comin out 2day. at least it was still hip-hop.

Anyway.. here's a list of music I hated as a kid but like as an adult.  Remember as a kid my #1 shit was anything Death Row.  There were a few artists who weren't associated with Death Row that I was big into.  Like Bone and Outcast, but mostly it Death Row affiliated.

-Anything by Erykah Badu -  "On and On" was way over my head as a kid.  I had no idea what the fuck she was talking about in her songs, and didn't realize how fine she was till I was older, either.

-Anything by Mos Def -  I remember his joint "Ms. Fatt Booty" burning up BET Rap City. But that shit was way over my head.  I remember thinking... "this song is about a bitches ass, this dude is trying way to hard to be smart and poetic about something so trivial"

-Anything Rakim  -  I didn't understand what the big deal was about Rakim.  He sounded kind of monotone to me, and his beats were too simplistic.  I thought his music was weak.  I didn't really realize how dope he was till after Eminem's Slim Shady LP album came out and changed the way I listened to lyrics.  After that I appreciated lyricism more.

-Nas-  Even though I loved "If I Ruled The World" and a couple other Nas joints here and there.  I still saw him as somewhat of the anti-Christ in hip-hop.  He was like the leader of the East Coast.  I wanted to see the West Coast on top so I wanted artists like Nas to fail.   Also, I remember the SlimShadyLP came out right around the same time as the I AM album.  So I really wanted to see Eminem's album stay #1 on the hip-hop charts, but I Am knocked the album off #1.  I hated Nas for that.  The "Hate Me Now" joint with Puffy was god-aweful!   I seriously wanted Nas to fail until a few months later (in late 99') I went back and bought the Illmatic album.   At first I only liked the track "Half-time" but steadily over the month it grew and grew on me and Nas has been one of my top 3 favorites ever since.

Let's see... I actually can't stand No Limit even more now, I just don't have time for bad hio hop, especially if it's not relevant to today's hip hop scene. I've tried listening to stuff I didn't like then, and the only thing that I like now is KRS-One and Boogie Down Production. Being from the California, I thought New York was not refined enough to sound good, and though I actually liked most New York artist and songs, for some reason I just didn't like KRS-One back then his voice was too rough over very raw beats. Now I think that's what makes him great, and I love to listen to KRS-One go hard over a beat.

As for Ma$e, I loved me some Ma$e, and loved the song Get Ready. I use to play that song all the time before going out. A lot of the tracks from that era sound very generic, typical fast pace hip hop beats with R&B singer features and videos at night with people in black leather jackets or flashy suits. So there was something about hearing many songs that sound like that Mint Condition song posted, and then a song from like Jagged Edge, and then hearing Get Ready by Ma$e that switched up the pace on radio and made me happy. Now I didn't hate the generic Bling Era tracks, I didn't love them either, I just saw them as what was playing at the time.

Ask my friend and he though 1993 was horrible for music, and didn't like Dream Lover by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. I loved 1993, my favorite year of music, so I guess it's all up to the person. Still, other than KRS-One, most music I hated then, I don't like now.

It's amazing how close minded some of you are, walling off so many musical contributions because they don't reinforce your current view of the world.

I can fuck with almost anything, guess that's cuz I am what Lyin' Brian would call a "citizen of the world" in one of his flawed, hypocritical rants about how he is different from other whites.

'Cause we don't like No Limit. That shit was wack as fuck man. Even then, especially now.

Like I said, if it was bad then, and irrelevant now, what would make the music any better. Wack music is wack music!
