Title: LA, SF, SD trip, what's good to see?
Post by: Dogg Ly Dogg on May 03, 2013, 12:17:52 PM
Hello Dubcc members from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego,
I'm going to CA in october and I was wondering what are the good things to see? Obvisously i'm really into gangsta rap and westcoast culture so what do you suggest to see?
What are the best record stores? the best place for shows? the best place to buy clothes? what are the good tattoo shops?

I wanted to see VIP Records in LBC but I heard it's closed now...
I want to see Watts towers, I heard Amoeba Music was good to buy records, I will probably see Nate Dogg grave, the Compton Fashion Center but for the rest I don't know especially in Frisco and Dago.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions and advices.

For some super tourist shit in SF, hit up the following... Pier 39, Fort Point, Muir Woods, Golden gate park, ride a cable car that kinda shit.  If you are trying some wigeuro wet dream gangsta tour, then I ain't gonna be the one to send you to a spot to get jacked.  No thanks.

Los Angeles hit: Venice Beach Boardwalk, Downtown Alleys, Hollywood Blvd, Sunset. They got the lil low rider shit on Crenshaw & Vernon on Sundays, thats probably the only thing I would advice you to if your trying to go to the hood.

Food Spots:
El Teypeac in East LA, get the Manual Special
King Tacos: Carne Asada Tacos

San Diego hit Pacific Beach and the Gas Lamp District.

You are going on Vacation and you want to see the Hood? The Hoods out here are probably not much different from the hoods in your area. Nothing special. You will not see a bunch of your favorite rappers out on the street selling cocaine. They will not be on the block with a bunch of hoes drinking 40s and smoking blunts.

If you're going to a great city like Frisco, don't worry about all of your little Hip Hop Fantasy's. Take a Hop on Hop off Bus Tour of the City. You can take the BART to some of Hood spots, but I don't know that you'll see anything of any real enjoyment. There's a ton of history in Frisco. Go check out Alcatraz, the Wharf etc.

In L.A. if you're coming down here expecting Low Riders, dudes Crip or Blood Walking all over the place etc. etc., you are in for a surprise. L.A. is a huge city and is real spread out. Stick to Amoeba Records, that's in Hollywood (also don't expect Hollywood to be this beautiful clean town you see on T.V., that's Beverly Hills, Hollywood can be filthy). I don't know any reason why you want to go into Watts, but be my guest. The only places you'd want to check out would Hollywood, Venice, Santa Monica, Pasadena and if you really want to go to Long Beach the only place worth seeing is Downtown Long Beach.

In San Diego, I believe someone already said, The Gaslamp. If you're down in October, might as well see a Chargers game if they're playing. They are bit outside of the city itself, but their rail system can get you to the stadium easily. SD is a great city too.

Thanks everybody for the answers.

Most of these answers are terrible unless you're a wigger.

LA -

Hollywood, even if it's just walking around the strip for a few hours it's one of the most iconic neighborhoods in America.
Runyon Canyon Trail - Straddles real LA and the Valley, you can see the entire city and is pretty cool.
There are a million good places to eat, Roscoes is cool and a good touristy place, everyone knows about it. Don't get too hung up on finding a place, just ask around.

SD - Fuck if I know.

SF -

Chinatown for a few hours is always cool.
Catch a Giants game if you can. The best park in the game (imo), excellent food and it's consistently packed now with 2 World Series Championships. Lots of fun. Afterwards you can stroll around Embarcadero and find a good place to eat.
If you skate, there is a huge ghetto area south of candlestick off caeser chavez that is also just good ghetto safari if that's your thing.

No too much I offered, but they are ways to really breathe in SF and LA, without wasting too much time.

SF really isn’t a “Gangster Westcoast Culture” city. I’m afraid you’ll be severely disappointed if that’s what you’re looking for (it’s mostly hipsters).
But SF is one of the best Cities in the US. Honestly looking for hoods, record shops and tattoo parlors is a waste of a SF trip. This city has too much to offer.
When I moved to SF a few years back a co-worker threw together a list of tourist things for me to check out. So if you like eating great food, smoking the best weed and having adventures in some of the most beautiful scenery on the west coast then you’ll really enjoy SF.

• Twin Peaks
• Fisherman’s Wharf/ Pier 39/ Ghirardelli Square
• Ocean Beach
• Golden Gate Bridge/ Bay Bridge
• Japanese Tea Garden
• Exploratorium
• California Academy of Sciences
• Cable Cars
• Legion of Honor
• Beach Chalet
• Cliff House
• Lombard St. (Enter from Hyde down to Leavenworth)
• Crissy Fields
• Pond at Palace of Fine Arts
• Union Square
• Alcatraz
• Treasure Island for view back on city
• Sam’s in Tiburon for patio dining/view of city
• Ebarcadero/Ferry Building
• City Hall at Night
• Napa/Sonoma
• Beer Garden in Muir Woods
• Golden Gate Park
• Dolores Park
• Buena Vista Park
• Beer Garden in Muir Woods
• Haight/Ashbury
• Anchor Steam Brewery (book 6 weeks in advance)
•  Full House house ("Postcard Row" is located on Steiner Street between Hayes and Grove Streets.")
• MOMA rooftop
• Fort Mason
• Chinatown
• 9th floor of DeYoung Museum
• Lands End hike
• Castro
• Conservatory of Flowers
• Sutro Baths

Yeah fly from Europe to the other side of the world to... drink some European beer! :D

Nah but seriously that's a great suggestion because the huge redwoods are the most amazing thing I remember from my trips to Cali.

No offense to Europeans but between Oregon, Washington and Cali, We’ve got the beer game on lock. I would never order a European beer out here. If you like drinking good beer and not anything with the word light in it, then you will love the brewery on the West coast. My person favorite is in SD called Stones.

But seriously Muir Woods really is beautiful.

Also like Whoisthis said: Take a Hop on Hop off Bus Tour of the City. I've done those a couple times when friends visit.

Maybe even buy an entertainment book for about $25, you'll get a bunch of coupons for tourist stuff.
