Title: Terrace Martin - 3ChordFold [Discussion Thread]
Post by: Si-Chiggedy on August 12, 2013, 04:10:10 PM
I just downloaded it off amazon and I'm spinning it. I'm at the second last track and I can tell you this is real music, grown up, sophisticated and well played. Terrace Martin definitely is one of the best producers and musicians that the west has brought up since the 2000's! Great album, really soulful!

Terrace Martin is my favorite artist besides DJ Quik. Nobody active in the game is touching him right now. Terrace is in a league of his own in my view. If he keeps putting out music and stays in the game for a few more decades, his corpus of work might surpass Quik's.

im loving this from start to finish...    Terrace is a genius and the Quincy Jones comparison is spot on...  you never know what to expect.. this album is like a hip-hop, jazzy-funk gumbo masterpiece ...narrow-minded music fans need not apply. 8) 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

if i had to pick a favorite after one listen...i would have to pick Angel (and the hidden MJ remake "Can't Help It")

Streamed this from djbooth

This was worth my time, the album is pretty consistent from beginning to end. The tracks themselves are fairly tight. Terrace definitely put the best of his recent sound on there. The compositions and melodies are still arguably spongy and lightweight, but nothing unlistenable. Standouts of the album are Terrace's sublime Saxophone, some of the female monologues and Tone Trezure's scene stealing voice.

Overall it's good music but still Terrace is juggling too many sounds and switching between being a pretty bad singer and a wack rapper. When what he really does well is being a gifted Saxophonist (something too few and far between on the album) and to me he's just not playing to his main strength. In terms of hiphop his best previous material had been his production collaborations with other established producers like 9th Wonder, Crazy Toones etc. His musicianship is undeniable, but as a solo producer or artist he's still got a way to go.

6/10

that's always been my take on Terrace Martin's music, but I have somewhat high expectations for this album, but I'm not surprised reading feedbacks such as Will B's. Need to find a link before buying it.

I disagree with the idea that Terrace has a ways to go as a solo artist. The reason some people think this is because Terrace is simply an unconventional, but very true-to-himself kind of artist. He's not trying to present people with a consistent image and an easily classifiable sound. His music is eclectic, but I think it is doper because of its eclecticism. To me, Terrace is one of the most complete artists out there. Whether he's rapping, singing, producing, using the vocoder, or playing the sax, the nigga is dope.

Absolutely loving this album. $16.99 on Australian iTunes but well worth the price. Really smooth album and just chill to listen to start to end.

Just in time for Summer down here. Love it.

Yeah, it's funny, the people who criticize Terrace's artistry would probably have no complaints if he just rapped about killing people and slanging over the dope beats he produces.

I've been bumpin 3ChordFold every day since it released. The Ab-Soul Intro is extremely dope, one of Terrace's most perfect beats. Angel has endless replay value. The album version of Something Else is real dope (the instrumental in the beginning/ending is different). Gone is a real nice track. Motivation is smooth. Every song comes correct.

I'm gonna have to check this out. To be honest, I've never really been able to get into Terrace's production, for some reason (and I know I'm in the minority when I say this) he's always been little boring and kinda dull to me but then again I haven't heard everything he's ever done. Don't get me wrong, I recognize that he's definitely a real musical dude, there's no denying that but imo I feel like he'd be better as a session player than the actual producer like if he played some instruments for DJ Quik or Dre for example, with them calling the shots as the actual producer. But that's just me, like I said, I want to check this out especially since it's getting such good reviews.

Word. I play it straight through and skip only 2 or 3 songs.

Best tracks: Ab Soul's Intro, Get Away, Something Else, Motivation, and Angel.

The remixed album contains a lot of dope music, as expected!

I would have liked for the remixed album to contain more of Terrace rapping...I like his raps. He must have listened to the haters who told him "stick to producing." I'd enjoy an album with a lot of Terrace rapping, playing sax, singing with the talkbox, and of course producing. The nigga is strait dope.

Same here.  I think some producers shine more when they produce (i.e. Terrace Martin and The Alchemist) but these two can rap and I like their styles.

Does anyone have the production credits for the Remixed album?

This is the tracklisting and production credits for the original (non-remixed) album:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3ChordFold#Track_listing

As you can see Terrace did have some co-producers on there - so just wondering who worked on the Remixed version as I'd like to enter these into my song titles.

Thanks.
