and these kids comin in are 19 years old....they grew up watching lebron more than they grew up watchin kobe. lebron grew up watchin kobe......it comes down to kobe havin the more respectable game, achievements, accolades, with an unmatched resume by any active player. not because "they grew up watching him", teddy, my boy.

If they're 19, they probably started watching baskteball around 10 years ago. In 2003 Kobe was in his prime, setting records and later winning championships. LeBron was just entering the NBA and was later chocking in the playoffs.

yea, but when ur 10 years old and a sensation like lebron comes along, ur more likely to be excited to watch him grow as a player, keepin tabs on him, watchin his first games, seein him develop etc...there is far more relation in that than being 10 and watching someone who u didnt really grow up watchin, cuz u were too young to see them when they were comin into the league.
which explains cham bein a lebron fan, and me bein a kobe fan....i was 10 when kobe played his first game for my lakeshow, and have followed him ever since. it feels more personal when uv watched them grow....at that time, jordan was on top of the league, but i wouldnt say i grew up watching him as much as i grew up watchin kobe. it's actually common sense, if u think about it.

Anyways, in the end it's probably personal preference. But judging by how my friends and I were following bball, as matter of fact any sport, we cared about top dog the most, the one who was talked about the most, was on every poster and sticker. I didn't care about personal involvement when I was 10, or someone to identify myself with. When I turned on the TV I saw Kobe being that dude, so I was not occupied with rookies. If anything, now that I'm older it's the other way around. I follow some players since their college careers and hope they make it.
I'm an athletic coach btw, teach kids from 8-12, and I've never heard one kid saying anything about Irving. All they care about is Lebron and/or Durant.

Not that quick on the uptake, are we? It's called an analogy, and though the sentiments may not be the same, the general concept of watchin some1 grow remains.. There's more of a sentimental value for players you've grown watching. For instance, I can relate more with Jason Kidd than with Kevin Johnson, because I've watched him play his entire career..but go ahead and act like u dont get what I'm saying for the sake of ur baseless argument lol
And my point was not that kids would like Irving more.. It's that in 10 years, they will have been able to say they followed Irving closer and will naturally develop more of a personal attachment to him than say Deron Williams (comparing players of the same caliber) . Also, let's not act like LeBron was ur average rookie... Coming in, he was already bein talked about more than any other superstar. Players who are 19 now grew up watching/hearing about LeBron more than Kobe, that's all there really is to it.

LeBron was on a bottom feeder team in Cleveland. 8 years ago, the Lakers were not as good and the Cavs were a much better team than in 03-04, but Kobe averaged 35 points a game and had his 81 point game.
Point is, that why LeBron had a TON of hype around him, the average 10 year old boy is more concerned with who is the best or most known. They know what's on TV. Tell me at that time Kobe wasn't plastered all over the TV? The Lakers had to have triple or the National TV games than the Cavs during those times.
Kobe's window of unmatched popularity ran from 03-04 until about 06-07 or 07-08. All the Rookies who will be entering the league who were kids around those times will say Kobe.
My favorite player when I was 10? Hakeem Olajuwon. Why? Because by the time I was 10, Jordan was on the White Sox. Magic had already retired. Same with Bird. Hakeem was the best player out there. I was born when Olajuwon came in the league. But, as a young impressionable fan, Hakeem was the one I saw on Sports Center. He was the one I saw on TV playing.
To this day, Hakeem is still my favorite player. You gain a connection with that first player you follow.

I skipped over any post of yours. Though, you may have missed my point: You gain a connection with that first player you follow. You follow the first player you really find out about. You find out about the Best player (LeBron was NOT the best player 10 years ago) or the player you see the most (Kobe, again, was on a team that made the Finals, had 3 other hall of famers and were a top 5 in the NBA 10 years ago, who do you think was on National TV and Sports Center more?).
Remember, in 03-04 you just couldn't go to a website and watch all Regional Games. You were at the mercy of what was on TNT/ESPN that night. Kids who were born 2 years before and 2 years after me all say Jordan was their favorite. Why? Because when they were getting into watching Basketball, he was the best. By your theory, my favorite player should be C.Webb. He was the Rookie of the Year when I REALLY got into Basketball. He was hyped in College. But, he's not. My friends who were born a couple years later, should probably Iverson. They don't. Kids born 2 years before me should say Shaq. They don't.

How old are you exactly? Magic stopped playing in 90-91. I don't think you're my age, but I could be wrong. I'm guessing you were born 87 or so. I hardly call being a fan of someone at the age of 2 or 3 constitutes as "following." Unless, of course, you're older. You seem to be more exception, than rule. I just go by people I know. Friends. Family. So on. My brother was born 1980. He loved Magic and when Magic retired it was Malone. Many of my older buddies who were born in 81-83 are all Jordan fans. What I think you mean to say is: People who got into Basketball in the late 90's until about the mid 2000's relate to Kobe, Duncan, Garnett and J.Kidd. People who got into Basketball from the mid 2000's until about the next few years will relate to LeBron, Melo, Wade, Durant etc.

In College, he was apart of one of the most talked about teams ever, the Fab 5. They had plenty of hype, plenty of attention. He only spent 2 years in College, but both years he took his team to the Championship Game. He was the number 1 pick after that.

I watched C-Webb his entire career. I remember watching him in College, I watched him enter the NBA. 10 years later, I didn't relate anymore to him than I did before. I watched him grow into a real leader on the Kings. But, it didn't change a thing. He wasn't the best when I started following.

I was born 84. My favorite Pro-Wrestler was Hulk Hogan. Why? Because I started watching Wrestling when he was on top. You know who I hated? Shawn Michaels. Why? Because I thought the Rockers were a shitty Tag Team and I never bought into his character. But, ask someone who got into Wrestling in the early to mid 90s, they'll tell you Shawn Michaels was their guy.
My favorite players in Baseball were virtually any mix of Mark McGwire, Kirk Gibson, Jose Canseco, Ricky Henderson or Orel Hershiser. Why? Being from California was a major factor and because in and around 88 was when I started playing Tee-Ball and going to Dodger games with my team and my dad (or A's games with family in the Bay). The A's and Dodgers played in the Series that year. Why wasn't I into guys like Dave Justice, Sandy Alomar or Jeff Bagwell (all amazing players, but not guys that I could say are my favorite)? Because they just weren't the best or playing for the best when they came into the league.
In Football, obviously being in California I had a lot of choices. Being from L.A., the obvious choices were the Rams who were terrible and the Raiders who my dad taught me to hate. Branching out, closest to me was the Chargers. I remember my dad listening to Mighty 690 (which was the a sports Radio station in San Diego that we would get up here in L.A.). But, i couldn't get into them. That left the Niners. I had obviously heard about and saw Montana, but it wasn't until I really was able to follow the game that I got into the Niners. Watching Young and Rice with Ricky Watters on Offense and Hanks and Norton on Defense left an impression on me. Those were my favorite players. Not guys like Marshall Faulk or Jerome Bettis.
I say all that to say this: Everyone is different and will find one thing or another to relate to a person, place or thing. Typically, when it comes to being a fan of something, the person will relate to what is popular, because it's easier to understand.

That could be. And, obviously, hypocritically, I was a fan of guys like McGwire when I was very young, too. But, I also had a large sample size of McGwire to watch from then on, whereas a guy like Magic was gone by 91. I don't know that going back and watching Highlight reels is really the same. Part of what makes sports great is being in the moment. Being in that moment of the Pennant Race. Watching a Game 7 and NOT knowing the outcome. Etc.

i was old enough to shit my pants when magic retured for a season in '95.....and yea, cats born in the 80s usually become old enough to really start following basketball in the 90s, hence being able to relate more to the kidd-kobe-garnett-duncan class of players....and thats from experience. now, chris webber is not a 1st tier star, so u wont find nearly as many cats claimin him their favorite as u would the others i mentioned. he was a great player, yes...but he was 1 step under the class of malones, barkleys, duncans, etc.
