Title: The Roots -...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin [Discussion Thread]

The Roots have a busy schedule ahead of them with the continuing transition into Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, but that hasn’t stemmed their creative ambitions; they put out a collaborative album with Elvis Costello last September, titled Wise Up Ghost, and have been in the studio working on their own 11th studio album, which Questlove tweeted last year was set to be called …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. Details have been pretty scarce so far, but Black Thought hopped on the phone with XXL this week to discuss the direction of the project, and some of what to expect.

“We’re close to being done on it, it’s coming soon, hopefully sometime this Spring,” Thought said. “It’s called And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. It’s conceptual; it’s another concept album in the spirit of undun, but it’s not just about just one kind of character, we create quite a few different characters in this record. It’s satire, but in that satire it’s an analysis of some of the stereotypes perpetuated in not only the hip-hop community, but in the community. I don’t know if that makes any sense.”

Thought expanded on some of the differences between ATYSYC and undun, their critically acclaimed 10th album from December 2011. That project was positioned as a day in the life of a character named Redford Stevens, whose first-person narrative of the day of his tragic death served as a metaphor for the plight of urban youth in America. This one will not be so centered on one character, however.

“We created some of these characters that we kind of see,” he continued. “We as artists, musicians, Philadelphians, New Yorkers, we as black men, we’re familiar with very many of these characters, and we kind of introduce them to the rest of the world in a manner that makes them more easily understood than maybe seeing it.”

One of the defining things of undun, outside its narrative, was its length—just 38 minutes bookended by a symphonic act that provides the backbone to the project. ATYSYC may not have that same type of pocket, but it will still be on the shorter side.

“Hopefully you’ll get something new from it every time you listen to it, you’ll hone in on something different,” Thought said. “It’s short enough to do that, to take in, to digest in one sitting, so to speak. I think right now it’s at maybe 34 minutes; there may be one or two musical things added on to the record that I know is the record at this point. But I don’t think it will be any longer than 36 or 37 minutes in its entirety. So in that, it’s short enough to digest, but it’s gonna be dense. So dense that maybe in one sitting you’ll listen to it and only listen to the piano and string arrangements, and then you’ll listen to it again and you’ll get into the actual words that are being said, and you’ll listen again and get into some of the other musicality. There’s very many layers to this record, but it doesn’t take place over very much time.”

The album is slated to be released via Def Jam Records; as of press time, there was no official release date.

Title: Re: A guide is a group of Joomla!
Post by: Will_B on April 03, 2014, 02:22:17 PM
A template is a group of Joomla! widening that changes the operating your install looks. There are two types of templates employed aside the Joomla! CMS: Front-end Templates and Back-end Templates. The Front-end Die controls the personality your website is presented to the operator viewing the website's content. The Back-end Mould controls the street your website's administrative tasks are presented in search controlling command functions during a Joomla! Administrator. These would file shared tasks such as: consumer, menu, article, category, module, component, plugin and pattern management.

So spot on then I'm managing a staff of around 30 people working on a private school website based off of Joomla 1.5. I am irksome to gather all of our Joomla articles regarding our sports teams perform the unmodified panoramic templet (illustration). Precise now, I'm decent having person do it one at a time, which evidently causes truly a scattering inconsistencies. Perfectly I would like to replace the articles in that sample with a form (on the backend) that just has input fields for the individual tidings (band moniker, schedule, roster, coaches, etc.) and then displays it using the die on the frontend. The closet preoccupation I have inaugurate is Load Templater, but I'm wondering if there is a better way. Thanks in advance.

There is times that you liking hunger to place a module backing bowels a certain of your Joomla articles. There can be any tons of reasons why you might hanker after to do this..

The module positions are not present or not proper to recognize the modules more than or deeper your Joomla article
You wish to appointment a module in the mid-point of your Joomla article
You hunger to appropriate a module to a distinct article somewhat than assigning the module to each of the menu items linking to that Joomla article
Identical other exemplar that this can be strikingly within easy reach is that if you hold in the cards volume which is mutual to a on the loose number of articles. Placing this comfort inside of a 'Custom HTML' module and loading this same module in to a reckon of articles allows you the option to bowdlerize this content within each of your articles via barely editing the corresponding 'Expressly HTML' module.

A allowable illustration of this can be seen here on Joomla51 with the pattern specify pages (J51 - Nocturne). At the poor of each of the template details you will commentary warn a aggregation of boxes displaying features of each template. These are Patronage HTML modules placed within each page. If at any time we wish to edit this arena of the details episode we really enjoy to reorder a apart module and these changes desire be applied across each of the die item by item pages loading this module.

You dont last 21 years in this game if nobody cares about your music. Thats undeniable fact. As far as dubcc bein only place people care about them thats funny cuz I go to multiple hiphip sites this one talkin about them the least but this is also one of the worst message boards in terms of hiphop knowledge on the internet.

New York’s Public Theater sits along Lafayette Street, an easily forgettable thoroughfare.

As the grid of Midtown slowly peels away to Lower Manhattan’s tangled, arterial web of vendor-lined mainways and cobblestone side streets, Lafayette gashes its way from City Hall to Cooper Union, nary a care given for its neighboring Broadway or East Village’s lower numbered avenues. “F*ck you,” it screams, probably in some shrill, nasally soprano, a boroughs accent becoming harder to find as the sh*tbirds (like this author) move from places like Strongsville and Scranton to occupy its former warehouses, tenements and brownstone walk-ups. It elongates the “you,” holding it out like a balloon deflating. It’s quarrelsome and contentious–try having to live in Broadway’s legendary shadow.

But the Public Theater–Lafayette’s cool with it. The distinguished, 158-year-old building’s columned front can be reached from the smooth slatted stairs leading to the double doors that freckle its face. Walk inside, become engulfed by its high-ceilinged lobby, but make sure it inevitably spits you up to its slightly congested second floor where you can find the Public’s Anspacher Theater.

If, by chance, you remembered Lafayette and you schlepped its several blocks to its Public Theater on the night of Tuesday, May 13, you would’ve seen The Roots perform their eleventh studio album, …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin, for a packed house.
Well, sort of.

The penis, and vagina, and heart-shaped balloons fell from the ceiling right around the point when the red floor lights began flickering and a crackhead thin dancer/motion artist–surrounded on three sides by the audience–began freaking out.

To say that The Roots’ premiere of their new album was unconventional would be neither over or understatement. They definitely played the album: “Tomorrow,” the album’s second single, closed out the set, spiraling high into the rafters like evaporating rain and Black Thought’s spoken-word introduction and interludes had to have contained certain songs’ lyrics.

The thing is, you couldn’t tell when one song began and others ended, or what was album material and what wasn’t. Black Thought, shrouded in a baggy hoody, appeared intermittently throughout the entire performance to bark prophecies like, “N*ggas! Jews! Crackas! If there’s a Hell below… Then we’re all gonna go!” ?uestlove literally oversaw the four (or was it five?) piece Metropolis Ensemble from atop a black-boxed pyramid that rose steadily above the floor and held his DJ equipment and drum set. Sampling artist Jeremy Ellis provided certain tracks with electronic noodling fests, which was met by the crowd’s applause each time. And there was a didgeridoo, no sh*t (provided by Craig S. Harris).

So it wasn’t a traditional playing of the album, but that befits what The Roots do. Without getting into too much of the nitty-gritty of …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin (Tuesday night was really my first “complete” listen), the performance’s program explains the LP as “rais[ing] a series of challenges to its listeners: What is hip-hop, anyway? What does it sound like, and why? What is it supposed to accomplish?” Hence, the didgeridoo.

If going by The Roots’ performance, Hip-Hop sounds like a lot of things, but its version of Hip-Hop oftentimes becomes too confusing and convoluted in its own idea of imagery. It was hard to follow along with Black Thought’s ramblings and the symbolism of the performance’s random dancers and actors. But that’s okay. It was entertaining, thought-provoking (“okay, what does this right here all mean?”) and definitely entertaining–Captain Kirk Douglas’ near-set-ending guitar solo, FTW.

It was sort of a listening party, but it wasn’t. It was better.

Album listening events and parties are a dime a dozen here in New York City, and really they’re nothing more than industry-insider schmooze-fests and souped-up happy hours with open bars (which are always welcomed, by the way).
They’re not as interesting or glamorous as friends might think, but again: open bars are always welcomed. Free booze aside, Hip-Hop labels and artists should look at what The Roots have done with this two-night performance at The Public Theater as a way in which they can reinvigorate the idea of an album release or listening party. It was somewhat high-minded and bourgie, as The Roots are increasingly fond of presenting their work, but the fact that it ditched the status quo for listening events should be applauded.

But throwing a successful listening party doesn’t require Roots-level money and thought. Mac Miller had a great shindig for his Watching Movies With The Sound Off LP last June at the West Village’s IFC Theater. Supplying a 6-year-old’s catering dream by supplying endless amounts of Joe’s of Carmine pizza (!!), candy and soda, Mac rented out an entire theater and screened a nature film his buddy made that synced up perfectly with the album. Because guests were literally watching a movie, the whole thing dissuaded people from being the asshole who illuminates the pitch-black theater with his/her iPhone, so all attention was on the music and the sea turtle that was on the screen*.

In both cases it wasn’t a party people were attending, despite the fact they were social gatherings. More or less they were listening events, emphasizing the work they were promoting, which in the end causes two things: 1) it makes me want to know more about the music because that’s what was being forced on me and 2) it causes me to actually remember the event itself, which leads to posts like these.

What happened off Lafayette Street at the Public Theater on Tuesday, May 13 was a good idea, and I’m not talking about the music.

Two completely different styles of music. So how can that be n vice a versa please explain? Why would someone who listens to the Roots wanna hear TI talking about fuckin models popping bottles moving bricks if they some sensitive anti violent wimp? Shit Cormega one of my favorite rappers. He came out rappin about gangsta shit but now in his 40s damn near all his music is straight introspective music similar to the Roots shit. So if im his fan what am I? A thug or a backpacker? Its a  maturity thing thats all. Some of us actually listen to the music and can take in n appreciate all forms of good music. Doesnt define our personality cuz I know backpackers and street dudes that bump Cormega. Just like I know weak ass dudes that listen to straight gangster music and dudes who listen to the Roots who wont hesitate to slap the shit out of somebody tryin to call them sensitive.

Have to agree with Senor Seagully. I just can't say that it applies to anyone here. One thing I hate about these fools, is that they use groups like the Roots to try and prove they know the game. They'll be riding for some lame ass rapper and then if you try to question their knowledge, they'll start bringing up names like "I listen to Roots, Pharoahe Monch, Gift of Gab"  blah blah blah. But the reality is that they really don't listen to shit, other than for a couple songs here and there. And they probably don't even understand shit those fools are rapping about ha. Or they'll bust a different move, where they criticize a well known legend or someone who can OBVIOUSLY spit like say (Eminem) and they start name dropping again just to "prove" they know what the fuck they're talking about lol.

There's nothing wrong with liking a variety of styles. Whether some can spit and others are mediocre, it's all good. This is more about these fake ass hip hop heads who clearly try too hard and pretend they know it all. It's doesn't take much to identify these fools. Dudes just need to keep it real. Even if you don't like an artist, you can still admit they have skills. And if you like an artist, you can admit they aren't that great. Just keep it 100.

+1, you summed it up perfectly, but that could be applied to a lot of us, not just CM. just like I told CM in the TI Turn It thread, music doesn't have barriers so the "demographic" argument is invalid, if there's authenticity, groove and talent, I'll appreciate it no matter the region/style/genre. but Seagully and Iveus are spot on on The Roots being a group monopolized by hipsters and pseudo intellectuals who like to namedrop them in a conversation to sound smart without really knowing them, it has nothing to do with their actual talent and worth, which is indisputable for every rap amateur.

after listenin' to this record from top to bottom and randomly it's time for a classic review.

1. Theme From The Middle Of The Night - the legendary roots crew opens the album wit a slow moody nina simone joint settin' the tone for what's ahead on this opus. 10/10

2. Never ft. Pat Crash - over a eerie composition that takes on a life of it's own, black thought and patty speak on the ills of the world through their eyes. a nice joint to set off an album of this magnitude. 10/10

3. When The People Cheer ft. Greg Porn - the first single ! everything about this song is the shit from the rumblin' composition to the on point and poignant lyricism. get a bar muthafuckas ! 10/10

4. The Devil - the mary lou piece is appreciated I can definitely dig the roots goin' there. devils are everywhere...I see u miley.

5. Black Rock ft. Dice Raw - one of my favorite joints off the abum ! that beat is heat and dice raw and black thought give the track a lyrical beatdown. depictin' ghetto life anywhere usa. 10/10

6. Understand ft. Dice Raw and Greg Porn- the roots go to church on 'em real quick. that hook is possibly hook of the year. 10/10

7. Dies Irae - I call it beautiful noise...another piece to the amazing puzzle. 10/10

8. The Coming ft. Mercedes Martinez - over an angelic concoction Mercedes sings lovely and takes the resyt of  the album to the next phase as the composition gets dark for a moment. 10/10

9. The Dark (Trinity) ft. Greg Porn and Dice Raw - over slammin' drums and epic piano work the roots and fam go ham once again on another favorite of mine.  10/10

10. The Unraveling ft. Raheem Devaghn - as the album slows down just a tad more black thought and raheem keep it introspective. the perfect song and perfect placement on the album.

11. Tomorrow ft. Raheem Devaughn - over an optimistic groove raheem croons about how 'everybody wants tomorrow right now' there's no black thought to be found here hat's ok. the incredible endin' is amazing and after a while gets pitch black dark. it's exactly what I love about the roots the are always pushin' the envelope. 10/10

* if sophisticated hip hop on a grand scale is too much for your brain to digest this may not be the album for you. this album is dense indeed.  8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

hiphopdx -

"And Then You Shoot Your Cousin?" is what happens when you give The Roots "f--k you" money and the ability to escape the bubble of Rap while still remaining relevant in Hip Hop culture.

In the summer of 2012, Chicago drill rapper Chief Keef signed a three-album deal reportedly worth $6 million. Keef’s deal was attained due to the incredible viral popularity of his violent raps and gritty, minimalist videos. Teenage and edgy, for what he lacked in lyrical ability, Young Chop’s angry and brutalist trap symphonies he rapped over sounded like the streets he rapped about. However, one lightly regarded album, eight major run-ins with the law and millions of insulting internet memes later, Keef’s greatest claim to fame may be that his cousin—rapper Blood Money—was recently murdered on Chicago’s violent streets. Thus, in light of this news, of course the Roots’ eleventh studio album is called ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin?. In so much of Rap music being tied up in a complicated mix of artists being pushed as superstars (and being allowed the spoils of success, but lacking gifts in pure talent, execution and a classic definition of excellence)—Rap music’s most beloved band released an album that basically throws the genre they’ve adored for 25 years into a casket. Once they play taps at the funeral, they bravely walk away from Rap music (quite possibly forever) with their heads held high.

In March 2009, The Roots signed on to become the house band for NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Creatively, this partnership has blossomed into the band being named the house band for Fallon as he assumes the role as host of The Tonight Show in February 2014. However enriching the experience of playing on late night television has been spiritually, it’s likely been ten-fold as lucrative on a financial level. In short, The Roots have reached that rarefied point of having “fuck you” money. Attaining this level of largess may actually have made them wealthier than being bothered with critical acclaim and album sales. On their past three albums, they have used this rare perch to advance a progressive notion of what Hip Hop culture must do, insofar as questioning how to live in America with a black President, how to deal with a society falling apart, and, finally, how to kill, then bury, Rap music. ?uestlove worked on the campaign to elect Barack Obama, and I think it’s entirely possible that the gravitas of aiding in the election of America’s first black President has profoundly affected The Roots’ creative process. Thus, as a 40-year old black man in America inspired to stand and deliver, hearing Rap music get lowered into the ground on ...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin? must be delivered as one of the most cohesive Rap productions of the past decade—if and only because Questlove, Black Thought and company feel the newfound gravitas and importance of the demands of black American excellence.

Because The Roots are a band, I think it’s okay to call the album’s production symphonic. The dissonant drum strike that kicks off “Never” feels like Death knocking at the door, an example of just how in lock-step the producers and artists were in their creative vision. As well, because Black Thought himself told XXL this is both a satire and a concept album,” it’s okay to refer to those who contribute vocally as being in an ensemble. Thus, this is Rap as high-concept theatre, and it excels in that regard. The 11-track composition opens with the voice of Nina Simone singing the theme to 1955’ film Middle of the Night. It’s a perfect opening. The theme alludes to the idea that the sad, lonely and emotionally bereft rise in the darkness in order to discover peace. It’s an allegory to Rap, a once-proud genre now full of so many charlatans who—if they stared at themselves in the light of day—may be woefully unimpressed with who they are or what they’ve become.

Over The Roots’ last three full length releases, Black Thought has evolved from being a rapper to being a protagonist in The Roots’ story of a culture in demise. I think he also serves as one of many instruments in the band’s arsenal—hence his appearance on a scant five tracks this time around. The last three Roots albums have been “concept” albums, each being better defined as quite easily staged performances delivered in album format. Not since “Dear God” (from 2010’s How I Got Over) has there been such a clear and eloquent speech on the nature of the condition of Hip Hop culture in America’s mainstream as “When The People Cheer.” Asking, “Am I a douchebag or just another do-rag?” pretty much sums it up. We’re not in an era where we’re talking about emcees, lyricists or artists anymore. The talk is of “douchebags” and “do-rags” only. With this being the case, Black Thought gives what feels like an effortless performance here. In a manner more cold and didactic than bored and disinterested, I think he is looking for honesty from the game, but coming up empty. So, like the Rap game Othello that he now embodies, Iago has just whispered that Rap-as-Desdemona is a whore. Unable to see that Iago’s statement may be more complicated than he initially imagined, he’s content to take his own life (represented as attempting to bury Rap itself) instead of existing in a heartbroken state.

If a Shakespearean allegory feels too heavy to be believed for a Rap album, then lean in closely to the aural dynamics at play here. If Black Thought (and the always fantastic, if underrated Dice Raw and R&B vocalist Raheem Devaughn, especially) never spoke a word, the album’s minor-key dependence creating a sense of gloom of view would be crystal clear. “Never” opens with a choir that has an angelic feel, “Understand” certainly has a church organ buoyed by boom bap drums and “Dies Irae” lasts for just over a minute, but sounds like the organic answer to Kanye’s vitriolic scream from Dante’s infinite circles of hell known as “Black Skinhead.” Yes, there’s certainly a song called “The Devil,” as well as plentiful religious symbolism surrounding the nature of death. The album is dark, powerful and intentionally morose. The Roots perform here with purpose and intention as if guided by divine gift. However, they’re more than certainly aware that the genre and culture they love so much may already be headed to hell.

...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin? is what happens when you give The Roots “fuck you” money and the ability to escape the bubble of Rap while still remaining relevant in Hip Hop culture. At some point, The Roots matured into men, while clearly to them—as Questlove has recently shown in his writing for Vulture and reaction to the 2008 shooting of Sean Bell—Rap music may still be obsessed with childish things. Given these particulars—in possibly the greatest irony of all ironies—their following warrants them releasing an album that could feasibly do some business for a genre they want to kill in an industry that allowed Hip Hop culture to possibly be fatally maimed. In that being said, listen to this album 100 times. Simply put, I feel this album is a classic. If this is Rap at death’s door, then it has every right to sound this great in its final moment.

Album now in serious rotation. Roots albums always need time to absorb everything. This one closest to Phrenology in feel which took me a lot of spins to get my head round

Questlove was actually right IMO when he said its gonna deliver something new every time you listen to the album
