Title: Above the Rim at 30: Warren G and More on Making Hip-Hop’s Best Film Soundtrack
Post by: gfunkin2 on March 20, 2024, 06:17:47 PM
Fun piece about that classic Above the Rim Soundtrack from back in the day. In addition to Warren and Nate, also loved hearing about Big Pimpin'

Murder Was The Case was a short film and its soundtrack is better imo

Exactly.  It's top 10 but definitely not the best ever.  It wasn't even the best on Death Row.  Murder Was the Case was superior to Above the Rim.  For Rap Soundtracks top 5 goes like this:

1.  The Show
2.  Murder Was the Case
3.  Sunset Park
4.  Jason's Lyric
5.  Above the Rim

"No More Endo Gin and Juice..." probably Snoop's Magnum Opus, maybe next to "Gin and Juice" or they count "G Thang" even though it was featuring Snoop

That's got to be the hardest verse Snoop ever wrote man I mean it was the rap version of Thriller for sure.  Then you got Dre and Cube topping that shit with another Rap Epic like Thriller with "Natural Born Killaz" larger than life track.  Then you gonna hit um with Dogg Pound's most bangin cut "What Would U Do" Tray Dee drops his gem followed by Nate classic and the ultimate posse cut of all time "Who Got the Gangsta Shit" then Sam Sneed's banger never gets old... I mean that album has epic bangers after epic banger... Quik comes with one of the most famous and classic diss records of all rhyme... they made some questionable song choices after that though, they should of used a song from Pac since they paid him the money

Okay now this shit is pissing me off.. it's bad enough the album I bought didn't have "Pain" on it which is a classic 2pac joint..

...now I find there was another banger that was like a leftover single B Side joint for the Regulators single but also attributed as being part of the Above the Rim soundtrack, well I never heard this banger until today..

This is 2pac and Treach why did they leave these two 2pac songs off the Soundtrack when 2pac is a star rapper and he's in the movie it doesn't make any sense that these songs wouldn't be there.

So I bought the album from Wal-Mart so it was also missing "Dogg Pound 4 Life".  So check this out... I was missing

"Pain"
"Dogg Pound 4 Life"
2pac and Treach joint

Yeah, it's so strange that several songs got left off the official Above the Rim soundtrack, but could be found on the Regulate maxi-single or the companion Music from Above the Rim miniature soundtrack.  Not just Pain and Loyal to the Game, but also Lord G's Mi Money Rite appeared on some versions as well depending on whether you got the Regulate maxi or the Music From in the US, Europe, or Asia.

If you're interested in buying some hard copies, some private sellers have them on Discogs.com.

yeah and did they even have a reason for not just putting all these joints on the retail cd and just having the same tracks on all releases

Well, you know, looking at it in the most cynical way possible, there was definitely a reason to not put them all on the soundtrack - money. Why would the record just sell you the soundtrack when they could also sell you the soundtrack and the maxi-single that includes exclusive B-sides?

It's possible, but they never said that.  They just always act like it's all on Above the Rim. And the music is in the movie which was another thing that confused me as a kid.  This was in the days before google when you would argue for hours with friends over things you just google nowadays.  The argument was, "Does a soundtrack have the songs from the movie."  Of course I said "no", because Above the Rim has "Pump, Pump" in it, it had "Pain"at the beginning, it even plays the Dogg Pound banger that came out 2 years later on Sunset Park, so go figure.

And I was too young at the time to really know about singles and B-sides and how all that worked.  Just would've been nice to have it in 1994 instead of discovering it in 2024 when my mackin days comin up as a G and playing ball are long past

Bangin!! Wish I had came across that in stores at that rhyme (time) would of been a real find, gem—but I probably would have missed it because I was like 12 years old and I would have thought, "well I already have Regulate on Above the Rim and G Funk Era why would a buy the single" which is the same thing I thought when I saw the maxi single for "How Do You Want It' and didn't actually hear "Hit Um Up" for the first time until September that year

That's damn near the level of the that 2pac Maxi Single that went double platinum and had...

"How Do You Want It"
"California Love" (Mad Max version)
"Hit Em Up"

I had the tape back in the day…it had the three bonus songs including my favourite Pac song of all time- Pain.

So many good songs from the movie that didn’t make the cut, including an early version of Just Dogging that was, at the time, titled Mobbin with the Pound https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p0YDmMOjEQM. (The version released on Sunset Park was much better )

and YZ- The Ghettos Been Good To Me  https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wkkzKFz0Ozs&pp=ygUbeXogZ2hldHRvJ3MgYmVlbiBnb29kIHRvIG1l

ATR may not be as good as MWTC, but combined with the movie I liked it better (same with Menace II Society)

that's crazy because I rewatched the movie and noticed "Just Doggin" in it, which is odd because it was 2 years later when that surfaced on Sunset Park.  Which makes you wonder why they didn't put it on Dogg Food

damn.. and yet another gem !!  That YZ joint is crazy.  I also caught that in the movie.  Was he the first to coin that phrase, "I earn my respect in the street, the ghetto been good to me.. true and living.." because Too Short also used it in his 96 anthem "Gettin It"

Back in the days, a lot of albums would have cassette only songs as they could hold 90 minutes of songs while CDs only allowed 80 minutes.

Also, it was a ploy to sell more singles. It might have also been that the song didn't get cleared for a sample in time for the soundtrack so would be released on a later single, like Pain on the Regulate single.

never knew that about the length... too bad I didn't buy the cassette back in the day.  Still a great summer though.  G Funk Era and Above the Rim.  Back in those days before jobs and a driving, you were lucky to get two albums in a summer.  Those were the only two albums I got and I struck gold.
