Title: Need help with an OLD tune
Post by: _That_Cracka_J on August 13, 2003, 11:09:36 PM
I hear it on the radio at work a lot (they play a lotta older stuff), it's probably from the 60's, maybe earlier.  It's got violins in the music and maybe some xylophone too.  The only words I can really remember is: "There is a place in Spanish Harlem..."

Anybody know what the hell I'm talkin' about?  Title or singer?

Hmm bob dylan, aretha franklin and ben e king did a song about spanish harlem but from what you've described id think it would be the Ben E King version...
...same lyrics as Aretha but i assume you would have mentioned if the singer was female...

Spanish Harlem
(Jerry Leiber/Phil Spector)

There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
A red rose up in Spanish Harlem
It is a special one, it's never seen the sun
It only comes out when the moon is on the run
And all the stars are gleaming
It's growing in the street right up through the concrete
But soft and sweet and dreamin'

There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
A red rose up in Spanish Harlem
With eyes as black as coal that looks down in my soul
And starts a fire there and then I lose control
I have to beg your pardon
I'm going to pick that rose
And watch her as she grows in my garden

I'm going to pick that rose
And watch her as she grows in my garden
There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
La-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la la
There is a rose in Spanish Harlem
La-la-la, la-la-la, la-la-la la
There is a rose in Spanish Harlem ....

Got to no 4 in US in 1961 and re-released in 1986..

...if this aint it lol holla ;)

Somehow, I knew you would be the one to answer this ;).  That's gotta be it.  I'll try to locate it and I'll let you know if it's the right one, but it DOES sound like Ben E. King.  Thanks. ;D
