Title: USA: The Country without a name...
Post by: Suga Foot on December 20, 2003, 11:39:19 AM
The United States Of America is a description, not a name.  It's like calling Canada "The United Provinces of America".  Kinda weird that the USA was never actually given a name.

One other thing I noticed.  Look at the Washington Family Coat of Arms:

Stars and Stripes!  And is that an Eagle on top?

Hmmm, I really don't think it's that strange.  The land wasn't called "America" by the natives, it was a name given the entire area by settlers.  So "America" in a sense is a name given this entire area, and the "United States of America" is a portion of the bigger area named "America".

Oh, and one of my favorite country names is "L'cote D'voire" (probably horribly misspelled)

"The Ivory Coast", another descriptive name

I think this is the case with many countries actually. The Netherlands for example is officially called 'Kingdom of The Netherlands', while everybody (literally translated) calls it Netherland.

There's the famous "Iceland" and "Greenland", Iceland was named Iceland because somebody wanted to keep it a secret that it was so nice there, and wanted all the land to himself (can't remember which king/explorer).

You wouldn't understand the name unless you have seen the TV show Trailer Park Boys. Season 3, Episode 8 I believe.
