Title: fuck it, KanyeWest debut album is...
Post by: PLANT on February 17, 2004, 06:20:24 AM
Classic.....IMO, ........Ive been listenin to this album "College Dropout" for a week straight now, havnt bumped anything else.  Theres no filler at all on this whole cd, and every song is bangin and has its own feel to it.  This guy makes music from his heart and the album has a dope, fresh, consistant sound all the way through.   It almost has an Arrested Development new school feel to it, Even the skits are funny (altho not needed).  This is def. the kind of album hiphop needs right now.

Remember this is my opinion, if you agree, cool.  If not, well then drop what you think of the album.

Peace

EXACTLY what I was thinking. ;)
It's classic to me.

No

There are alot of very hot tracks and could be a classic but let's say there are 8 top notch tracks (4.5-5/5 for example) but there are 21 tracks here.  The couple of average-to-weak tracks and waste-of-track-skits get in the way and put too many holes in the album.  If he kept it to 10-14 tracks he probably would have ended up with a classic.

Honestly, i think its terrible.  I was so hyped for this CD and i think its garbage. Obviously Kanye's producing is great in general and on a lot of this album, but i just wasnt feeling the songs.  There were at most 4 tracks that i was feeling on the whole album.  Black Album and Kamikazee are much better than this.

peace

Ok cool,  just wondering what tracks you considered average to weak? Cuz personally I didnt think there were any average to weak tracks on the whole album.

Well I dont expect everyone to agree with me, hell I dont expect anyone to even agree with me.  Anytime someone calls out on a classic album people are always gonna disagree, but IMO this album is really powerful and soulful and its the perfect album for Represent and the kinda shit I wanna hear.

to me its classic, i dont think its perfect tho, its like a 8-8.5/ 10, but its a classic just cause its so different, all this bullshit is coming out now, a lot is the same, thats why i love Jedi mind tricks or canibus, cause its not the same as every other fuckin rapper, this cd had this it was different, i think its def a classic,

I dont think the cd is classic, but MANY classic cds are not flawless despite what everyone thinks.  I also wish i never heard the advance, because i really miss the ORIGINAL Family BUsiness, and Home.  If those two tracks were on there.........i havent even bought the album cuz i made my own copy, but i think ill cop it soon

i like it a lot nad have been playing it pretty much nonstop for the past month, and its pretty damn good and i havent gotten tired of it,  and prob one of the best cds ive purchased in a few years, but still not a classic.
i dont really like teh skits
but the feel and type of music on the cd is a lot different than almost everything coming out within these past few years. its refreshing to hear him talk about new topics even though his lyrics arent at the top of the game.

Does anyone else think Kanye is a dope MC?

Damn when he said shit like

I always had a P.H.D., a pretty huge dick...

&

Mayonnaise Colored Benz, I push Miracle Whips....

&

The doctor said I had blood clots, but I aint Jamaican man...

Iwas like   :o :o :o

Plus theres tons of other sick rhymes on that album....I never had any idea Kanye was so dope on the mic.  And his flow is really on point, I think he flows better than alot of other rappers.

It's a hot record no doubt, but I think there are too many skits, plus some of the beats on the album are average. Still better than 95% of the crap out now, though.

Represent - got to give you props - agree with your every word.

This album has got so many high points, from samples to hooks to flows, lines and concepts...

... the soulful horns that just creep in on the chorus of 'We Don't Care'... the whole concept of 'All Falls Down'... The hook on 'Spaceship'... Kanye's verse on 'Never Let Me Down'... the bit on 'Get Em High' where he's on the phone with Kweli and that girl... Bosko tearing the shit out of 'New Workout Plan' on the talk box... the honesty of 'Through The Wire'... and 'Family Business', which is so good the shit gave me goosebumps when I heard it for the first time.

Never expected the album to sound like this... only track I'd heard was 'Slow Jamz', and I copped this CD really just 'cause I loved the beats he'd done for Jay... I thought he'd be just another Roc rapper that couldn't hold a torch to Hov, but dude's done his own thing so well it blew me away.

Oh yeah, and let me say this (and it's only an opinion, but I really believe it):

College Dropout is better than The Black Album. By a l-o-o-o-ng way.

No offense meant towards anyone, but I wish people would stop calling things classics after first listen or a day or a week or a month. You really shouldn't even think about using that term until at least a year after the cd drops, since longevity is a huge factor in defining something as 'classic'.

It's easy to do, since a lot of songs and albums do just hit you like ugh when u first hear them. But so many songs just don't have lasting appeal in this quick-buck industry, so you really have to give it some time imo. Does anyone still think Obie Trice and G-Unit's cds are classics? I would hope not.

I haven't heard the Kanye album yet, wasn't really planning to, but I guess I'll give it a listen if everyone thinks its so good. Or is this just the Hype I was always told not to believe?

Should have this in the mail in the morning. I'm expecting a 8/8.5 out of 10 album, don't think it will go down as a classic, but it will be a real dope album for sure.

And Kaidy, I don't think anybody though the G-Unit and Obie albums were classics even when they were first released.

YEa its sad casue there A LOT of people that called both cds classic, like 6 for the obie and like 3-4 for the G unit, i thought the G-unit was crap, and the Obie was suprizingly good, 4/5, i dont wana rate kanye;s, but its def a classic

this album had the potential to be classic...if it didnt have the skits...just as i said before i heard it...the skits kept it from classic status...or potential classic status atleast...i dont think u should call any album a classic 2 weeks after it has come out. i love every song though.

Well, this is funny. My friend who is a big hip hop/rap fan asked me if I bought the new Kayne album. I said no, but how is it.

My friend is the biggest critic when it comes to music. He will tell you why the chronic IS NOT classic, but anyway, he said

"Yo B, this album is a fuckin classic"'

I told him not to throw that word out like that.

He said

"B, I'm telling you man, this album is going to change the rap game. Hip Hop is going to start merging with rap now. This album is a fucking classic B."

I let him rant on about it, but there is more

So a couple hours later, I went to visit another friend downtown. He asks me If I heard the new Kayne album. I said, no, but I hear it's good. He said

"Brandon, this album is a true classic."

I started laughing after i heard that twice in one day.

I said, no way can you judge an album that quickly.

He said

"Brandon, you're going to want to sit on the toilet when you hear this album. Otherwise, you'll shit your pants"

so me, not loving the HIP HOP sound to an extreme...I bought it.

I took off the wrapping

I took off the sticky tape crap

I opened the cd

I put it in my stereo

I hit play

and then........................

I shit my pants

College Dropout is better than The Black Album. By a l-o-o-o-ng way.

Yup!! But then again, I really hate The Black Album (Or was that Jay Z!?  :P)!!

The first few times I heard this album, I pretty much dint like it. I thought that there were too many skits and only like 4 ok tracks, but now that I got the chance to listen to the full album a couple of times, I must say its great!! Far from classic, but still one of the better albums!!

4/5

"whenevers theres a drought, get ur umbrellas out cuz thats when i brainstorm"

Any of these lines from one song off the black album is better than College Dropout.

whats up? u guys high on crack while listening to College Dropout and saying its better than the Black ALbum?

College Dropout....very good CD but not even close to a classic

I like to consider this a modern day classic come on compare this shit to whats out right now this has to be the best. The only thing that might of really stopped this album to be a classic is that kanye isnt one of the best on the mic but he speaks so much truth you can just feel that and it makes up for the rhyming part.

Its not perfect, but real soulful and I really appreciate that. I appreciate it cause its different than everything else coming out. Theres like 4 or 5 great tracks and the rest is good or average... one of my favorites gotta be track #21 "Last Call"...i fuckin love this song...its not even a song, its a story. 12 minutes  talkin and rapping back and forth.. I love the melody and the whole idea of the track, the story was tight (how Kanye came up and got signed to Rocafella).. I just dont get tired of this track and its hella long..I got it on repeat 5 times and the hour passed like that
