Title: MC Ren - The Villian in Black
Post by: That_Cracka_J on May 23, 2002, 06:13:30 PM
MC Ren – The Villian in Black

1. Bitch made nigga killa…An intro/first track combination.  I love the way Ren’s flow goes right into the hard-hitting beat.  Quality production.  Quality lyrics.  4.5/5
2. Keep it real…Nice song to roll around and nod your head to.  Track about rollin’ through and chillin’ in the hood.  5/5
3. It’s like that…Thumpin’ beat.  Ren puts down some wicked lyrics.  4/5
4. Mad scientist…The production of this song sets itself apart from any other.  Nothing even sounds similar to this track.  Ren’s flow is perfect.  5/5
5. Live from Compton “Saturday Night”…Production is good, the classic Cold 187um touch.  I’m really not diggin’ the guitar sounds in the chorus.  It doesn’t really fit the song.  Ren and Hutch’s verses are tight.  3.5/5
6. Still the same nigga…The production sounds older here.  It sounds like it would fit nicely on ‘Shock of the Hour’.  Nice flow.  4/5
7. I don’t give a damn…Smooth production.  Ren puts it down yet again.  4/5
8. Mind blowin’…Decent beat and lyrics.  Hook is good.  3.5/5
9. Great elephant…Beat gets annoying with the squealing in the background.  Ren lays down a tight flow though.  3.5/5
10.   Muhammad speaks…interlude
11.   Bring it on…Beat is off the hook.  Above the Law is featured here.  Everybody’s verse is on point.  4.5/5

OVERALL…8/10

This is MC Ren’s best solo work.  His lyrics are always tight an on point, but ever since his N.W.A. days the production just hasn’t been there.  Cold 187 hooked him up with some A+ production for this album.

Yeah, I think this is Ren's best full-length album.
Although it does have some marks, like "Live From Compton". It's kinda gloomy, dark. Not the type of record you put on when trying to get some ass from your girl.
Still, a good album.

I prefer Shock Of The Hour but this was a good album. I wonder why Ren was the only other member of NWA that rapped that never went gold even? All his albums were good.
