i guess that somebody already asked that question way back buit i read that topic about scott storch and thought to make a new poll about westcoast producers. i listed 9 names, if u think someone is better than those cats. post his name. i really wanna know how may peeps dont think that dr.dre is man with the masterplan... vote now. :pimp:
-
Dr Dre.
-
Dr. Dre is a better buisness man and makes more hits that sell alot, but Dj Quik is a better Musican/beatmaker and is more talented, so i give it to Quik.
-
DJ Quik says Dre is the best. :P
The Poll is about _producer_ NOT musician, writer or rapper.
A producer doesnt have to play a single note or rap a single line, just direct it.
Dr Dre produces a better final product.

Of course Quik is gunna say Dr. Dre is the best. Hes not gunna say himself.
It depends what your defintion of a producer is. In your case, he is the best. But most people consider a producer someone who makes the beats for songs and does everything besides the lyrics.
oh, and BTW, this poll is "Who is your favorite producer" not who is the best by standard.

Dr.Dre
But some other great producers are:
Battlecat
Daz Dillinger
Warren G

its a tie between quik and dre to me.. im tending to go with quik.. ill vote later
-
^^ i added him for u...
thx :)
-
dj quik
-
best producer is dre quick is a close second but dre has so many projects with pop stars that makes him considered the best. quick has shined on occacion but he does so many artist record that a lot of folks never hear that mausberg and that last 2nd 11 none album was off the chain. even the stuff he does for suga free and Hi-c was tight but you still have to give it to dre ( or dre group of hidden producers I.E. the Mel-Man) he was all over the cronic album.
-
what has Quik ever done on the level of
NWA, Doggystyle or The Chronic ?
on the basiis of those alone Dre wins.
Who has Quik put out there to last?
Who has Dre put out there to last? NWA, Snoop, Eminem, 50 Cent, The Game..
compare their output on pretty much the only project they both worked (but didnt collab) on ? Dre put on Cali Love and You Can't C Me.
Quiks catalogue cant compare.
-
Dre got the classic albums on lock... but he's not as good as he was 10 years ago IMO... I have 200+ Battlecat produced songs on my comp, and I prolly can't name 5 wack beats... so BC gets my vote!
-
Close call....but it's BC Powda

lol why you always get so sensitive when it comes to this question?
the question is who does each person consider the best producer, meaning opinions can differ, meaning it doesn't make sense for u to get mad if we dont agree..
i love dre, dre is tight and all, but i rate quik up there with him, what's wrong with that? to me quiks catalogue CAN compare!
-
gotta be dre...
Well...at least i rekon hes made the biggest name for himself...
-
^^ of course he's got the biggest name... no doubt about that! but doesn't mean he's automatically the best is it?
im still pending between dre and quik... can't pick who to vote for lol

you have to remember the history of this forum... where do its strongest roots lie?

True...however...i dunno....i just like his stuff...seems a lot of others do...majority rules? heheh
-

i remember the history of this forum, but im not sayin anything bout other people, i mean dre and quik are pretty much on the same level of popularity on here, im just sayin, whats the point of arguin about the question who does each person like the most... cause its just a matter of opinion anyway lol
-
they dont compare.. look at the level they're on now..
ask yourself... if you have a brand new hot artist.. wind the clock back.. and lets say Game who would _you_ have more faith in overseeing and producing and putting out his project..
who has a track record of having success.. not only with their own career (quik has flops remember! dre had the star track on his last album!) but with putting out big time artists..
-

im not denying at all that dre career has been wayyyyyyyyyyyyy bigger thank quiks. the question is though, who is the best westcoast producer, and to me:
quiks beats and on the level of dre's beats! it's only about the BEATS here. not about career, business mind etc etc. BEATS.
-
dre doesnt put out weak beats.. quik HAS put out some weak stuff.. i'm not saying he's no good.. but just that his output isnt consistent.
-
dre doesnt put out weak beats.. quik HAS put out some weak stuff.. i'm not saying he's no good.. but just that his output isnt consistent.
funny i was about to post the same thing, except other way around, dre has had some weak beats whereas almost all of quiks work been hot.
i honestly haven't been feeling too much of dre's work since 2001, except of course some songs, he really dissapointed me on Encore, and smoe of the other beats he had were weak to me. his beats on Game's stuff were good though. But yeah, as far as bein consistent goes, look at quik, he put out like what 7 albums? dre has TWO solos. quik has produced seveal other records all by himself too. with almost all tight beats.
-
dre doesnt put out weak beats..
you're exaggerating there..
-
dre might put out something "average" but nothing you'd skip...
-
^^ same with quik.
its useless arguing over this man, cause we just have a different taste i guess, which we won't be able to change by arguing lol.
-
naw quik has done some dodgy things..
i aint saying he's wack.. just has less quality control.. perhaps because he'sbeen in a situation where he's done stuff for low budget projects etc.. whereas dre has the luxury to be picky... quik's my #3 producer.. dre's #1... do ya know me well enough to get #2 ?
-

homie see thats what im sayin, u sayin he has less quality control, and i dont agree with that. but doesn't make much sense goin over this man, its just a different taste when it comes to beats.
btw ur #2 is pete rock

:-*

^^ of course he's got the biggest name... no doubt about that! but doesn't mean he's automatically the best is it?
im still pending between dre and quik... can't pick who to vote for lol
pretty easy nima, yea, dre put out 50 cent, eminem, snoop and even the game....
BUT the question was: best WESTCOAST producer...
is 50 cent from the westcoast? eminem? and even snoop isn that of a good westcoast 'product' at all... after doggystyle he didnt really put out westcoast music - the game: when i listen to his record, yea i like a few things a lot - but it NEVER EVER gives me that westcoast-feel almost everything that quik produced gives me
dj quik is a damn great musician!
and hes a hell of a producer, but he never ran with the rigt company - and thats whats the difference between him and dre - dre always ran with the right ppl at that time
if quik wouldve been with deathrow back in the day, and really putting albums out under DR, he probably wouldve had oversea promotion
and from my point of view his albums are at least on the same level as dres productions are - but its less comercialised - but maybe that wouldve been different if wouldve been with aftermath/DR
so i want YOU to vote quik for president! ;D
-
Quik ran with Death Row back in the day.. he was signed under his real name.. Suge executive produced Safe + Sound.
So basically you're dismissing Dre coz he worked with people outside the west coast.. ?
-
you are too funny seer. I haven't even cared for a dre beat in years, he puts out plenty of mediocre beats. he has flops too, the firm, aftermath presents, truth hurts. He only has 2 solo albums in about 15 years, I sure hope those come out as straight bangers. Whereas quik has put out 6 solo albums. Shit I ain't denying dre, he imo is probably the best westcoast producer, I can't deny doggystyle and chronic. but you are sugarcoating him like he's your own dad, give me a break. both legends in this rap game. just because dre has put on people like 50 cent, eminem, and game doesn't add any credibility to his production. Music is not about talent anymore, dre is just a bigger name than quik. Suga free is way hotter than 50 cent or game, but he has nowhere near the success, and it isn't quik or suga free's lack of talent. and putting NWA on? shit man, I again am not denying that dre had a big part of that with his beats, but the biggest backing behind NWA is Cube and Eazy. Without them there would be no NWA.
-
oh and yes, I think Rhythm-a-lism is a better album than 2001.
-
there's so many good producers.....Warren G, Daz, Quik, Battlecat....why ain't A-Plus and Domino on the list tho?
-
my number 1 is without a doubt the notorious d.r.e.
-

Dj Khalil isn't either
-
dr. dre hands down
-
Dr. Dre and DJ Quik are pretty close in my mind. They're only separated by a hair. They're not just the best in the west, they're the best in hiphop period.
I have to give the nod to DJ Quik. I feel his music more. I think Quik has a better feel for rhythm. When you listen to DJ Quik's beats, he takes it back to the 70's soul sound, but not just by sampling, but by composing. Albums like Rhythmalism have that feel. DJ Quik has been consistent his whole career. Dre has had some misteps, such as the early aftermath days.
What Dr. Dre has the DJ Quik doesn't have is Doggystyle, which is the best produced album ever. That album alone could make a case for Dr. Dre being the best.
As far as the argument about hits and record sales, DJ Quik is an underground artist while Dre is a mainstream artist. Therefore, he won't move the units Dre moves nor is he considered a big name in the production arena like Dre, the Neptunes, Timbaland or Kanye West. I don't think that has any bearing on an artist's musical skills. Besides much of Quik's best work has been for underground rappers like Suga Free and Mausberg so yeah, in the mainstream arena, he won't be as recognized.
I have to give it to DJ Quik because I feel he has elevated the game more than any producer and he has a profound understand of musical concepts in general and because of his track record, not in record sales, but in the quality of the work.
-
No doubt Dr Dre.
-
G Dubb... I'm still trapped in the G Funk era and have no intention to get out.
Then Quik, a musical genius. Probably the most talented producer, but I enjoy Warren's beats more.
-
Quik ran with Death Row back in the day.. he was signed under his real name.. Suge executive produced Safe + Sound.
So basically you're dismissing Dre coz he worked with people outside the west coast.. ?
and why did he say the opposite in the dubcnn interview then???? ;D
or was it some other interview?
well, he said: NEVER signed to DR - only gave dollaz and sense for the MWTC OST - and helped a little with production when DR artists were in the studio
-
Daz Dilly
-
Dr. Dre
-
5 star surgeon general, hands down
-
I got mad love for Quik, but Dr. Dre is the best.
Producers that come close include DJ Quik, Warren G, Daz, and Shock G. Shock G is underrated.
-
don't forget rick rock is also up there with them too
-
1) Quik
2) Battlecat
3) Warren G
-
whats sad is that you have people like soopafly and jellyroll up there but not people like dj slip, e-a-ski, ant banks, khayree, prodeje, studio ton, and plenty others who are better than almost half those listed.
-
dre
-
damn....dr. dre for me
dj quik is there too though
either way.....they both bring heat no matter what, now them working together on shit....thats a hell of a combination hands down
I mean....its all about westcoast producers:
dr. dre
dj quik
fredwreck (his beats are westcoast)
battlecat
daz dillinger (dont forget the shit he did for 2pac. and dogg food..amazing to me)
plenty others
now for the dre, quik argument
pros for quik
hes had many albums, all quality albums, each album has a classic no matter what, the beats are dope, sure some of his beats arent the best each time, but to me, hes NEVER came WACK
plus his quiks grooves are the shit, he flows tight, he knows what hes doin......as for popularity wise...its sad that hes underrated to many people, sure dre has game, and aftermath...but game would sound equally dope on a quik beat...i hope they make a song on quiks new album
pros for dre.
hes brought some of the most popular artists..but besides that, his beats...especially that g-funk era sound, all of his stuff in the death row days...fire...2001...damn dope ass album
the thing about dre....2 albums (excluding aftermath), 2 albums aint much...but look at the impact they made in rap, especially the first
-
dre
Like he said
-
whats sad is that you have people like soopafly and jellyroll up there but not people like dj slip, e-a-ski, ant banks, khayree, prodeje, studio ton, and plenty others who are better than almost half those listed.
those producers are "others" and u posted them. i could make a list wit 30 names but that makes no scene. u think studio ton, slip, khayree...... or "plenty others" are better than dre, quik, daz, warren g? ok, post the name u like the most and everything is fine.
-
Dre followed closely by quik then warren G
-
Dre hasnt done any amazing beats(well a few) since Chronic 2001 which was CO produced by Mel-Man and had (supposedly) Ghost producers.
Doggystyle and The Chroinc ware amazing(and one of the bests ever) but ever since he left deathrow he hasnt been as consistent on the board.
Since 91' Quik has been droping amazing beats on every album he has worked on. Dre has had some below average beats recently espically on the Encore album.
-
WELL WELL I SEE ALL YOU NIGGAZ SAYIN WHAT IS THE BEST PRODUCER IN THE WEST, WELL THE TRUTH IZ DJ QUIK IZ DA BEST, ALL THE QUIK PRODUXTIONZ ARE DA SHIT, DR DRE IZ THA SHIT TOO BUT THE NEW PRODUCTIONZ (THE DOCUMENTARY) ARE CRAP !!!! DJ QUIK ARE THE BEST EVER & THE ONLY CAN DO THE TALK BOX LIKE TROUTMAN ... SOMETHIN 4 THE MOOD BITCHEZZZZZ
-
Gotta go with D.Blake...
yo, Quik is just :o when it comes to the beat's
he's versitile, & more importantly u know he's doing that shitt
he's coming off from a different plain ImO.
+ he's nice on the mic, & he writes his own rap's.
he's a complete package in music.
He remind's me of a hip-hop Prince. (U know the Minnesota genius)
Yo I love Dre, but this is Opinion
& I got mine gotta go with Q.

Yeah, hes the best Rap Artist ever.
Hes a Producer/Musican/Rapper/Songwritter/Arranger/Engineer and Perfomer. And your right he reminds me of a hip-hop Prince.

DJ Slip.

ok, so this is the 300th time this has been done.. basically it says best and not fav so its dre vs quik.. and its dre...
-

Ant Banks is a legend, with all that work with Too $hort back in the day. Don't forget about DJ Aladdin, he produced some classic albums back in the day and he was only a teenager back then. He produced the Lop Profile LP and Ice-T's OG Original Gangster.
-

SAN DIEGO HAS SOME DOPE ASS MUSIC PRODUCERS. E-LOW, VMF, CRIKET.
-
Augh shit...That nigga DRE is in a class by his damn self.. I think Quik is the only nigga that's close to him but, Dre is the mothafucka.. It's that nigga that got NY niggaz trying to immitate. For the people that saying DRE's shit is not like 10 years ago.. It's a little thing call changing the game and that's what Dre is doing. He can make them same sample beats for years but, he's the type of brotha that likes to experiment and change his music.. It must be working cuz there's no producer more consistent than him.. PERIOD
-
Dr.Dre, then Quik and Daz
-
Dre is pretty good but i dont think he gives enough people their credit.
warren G and dj quick are tied for second
-

warren G and dj quick are tied for second
I don't want to hear about that credit shit, it's a known fact that all these mothafucka's talking about DRE not given credit or taking niggaz beats, they haven't put out a hit record since they fucked with DRE....especially that nigga DAZ. Quik is the closest thing to DRE and the the next mothafucka is a loooooong ass distant third..
-
David Blake
-
Dr. Dre no contest
-
The Alchemist
-
1. dj quik
2. dr. dre
3. daz
4. warren g
5. mc eiht n dj slip(2gether) ( gets slept on..)
6.anthony banks
7. saccs
8. fredwreck
9.alchemist
10. jellyroll
-
can johnny j get some props? he's a key part of the tupac legacy...
-
dr dre
-
Dr. Dre, but DJ Quik is also very good!
-
havent heard anything from him in awhile, but ant banks usually came with good shit. is he dead?
-
Since everyone is dickriding Dre and Quik and I going a different route.
I say Ant Banks he has produced a lot of classic shit and has just as much talent as Dre or Quik but for some reason he doesn't get any credit.
-

are you fucking joking?
-
^
It's my opinion.
-
did you read the post before yours?
-
it's pretty predictable.. Dre
-
we can't compare dre & quik anymore.
one is making dark beats and the other still makes real funky melodies.
and imo I love a lot more californian sunny melodic beats than sad NYC beats,
u dig?
-
DK ALL DAY AND FADE OUT OF CPT ARE BY FAR 2 OF THE HARDEST UNHEARD OF CATS IN OUT THIS WAY. YOU WILL HEAR OF THEM SOONER OR LATER WATCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
DJ Quik for me. Give Quik the same marketing support as Dre/Aftermath gets, and a generic thug rapper and they'd sell just as many under Quik as they would under Dre.
-
QUICK'S SOUND IS VERY GOOD BUT DOES HE HAVE A UNIVERSAL SOUND?
-
quik has a universal sound, listen to under the influence.
battlecat is the best on the west. quik takes second place. historically i'd like to throw pooh or rhythm d in there somewhere, but they haven't done anything lately.
dre is a fraud. he doesn't do shit on his own, he only works with bigger budgets and on bigger projects than cat or quik, so the "greater success" aspect is dubious. people look at dre's track record, but they never count his numerous false starts and fumbles. dre couldn't get a rakim project done? what about king tee? the whole original aftermath thing? dre's track record is not stellar, and he doesn't even attempt to bring out new artists without a gimmick (like eminem) or some somewhat well known artist (like 50) behind it. the guy is a fraud. and warren g (and maybe daz) have to get credit for some of the best tracks on doggystyle.
musically, quik is on a completely different level than dre and it's almost insulting to compare the two.
and dre doesn't have the diversity of quik or cat. dre doesn't even attempt to do r&b anymore because he can't cut it. all he can do is a bland hybrid sort of sound that isn't anything special. which is why dawn robinson had to shake him. drop an rc album already! let chris taylor ghost produce it or whatever.
the guy gets way too much credit. i don't understand how people can vote for the guy with a studio full of ghost producers. does dre even deny using ghost producers?
-
heres my favorite producers from the west......
Muggz
dr.dre
dj.quik
Warren g
Ant banks
shock g
i know most of these cats probably aint hittin nowadays but they gave hip hop some of its biggest hits. PEACE
-
oh, i forgot to add madlib, LOL madlibs beats are the bomb!!
peace
-
QUIK
-
Half of you mothafucka's are smoking serious crack! Quik use to say the same shit half you mothafucka's are saying about Dre, until I got in the studio with him. Quik said Dre is a genius in the studio and can't be touched..PERIOD. Also, Quik mentioned that he didn't do that beat for Truth Hurts and that Dre told him to take the credit to launch his production skills.. Quik said that shit worked for him.. Niggaz don't know what the hell they be talking about.. DRE is the best producer on BOTH coasts cuz we all know that majority of the East Coast producers are just plain WACK!
-
dre is the man, but i think RICK ROCK is on his ass !
-
hard one but i chose Battlecat
-
dre
-

quik got paid and said some nice things about the guy. oh well.
Also, Quik mentioned that he didn't do that beat for Truth Hurts and that Dre told him to take the credit to launch his production skills..
quik did the best track, on truth hurts first album, by far; and that would be "i'm not really lookin"
dre is overrated.
-

wasnt quik or the label sued cuz of that cut? nice move from dre. lool
-
DJ Quik noooo doubt. Dre has dissapointet me again and again lately. Crap compared to Quik.
-
Warren G is my fav. Dre, Battlecat, Daz, FredWreck and Jellyroll are also sick as fuck too
-
Easy Question maybe hard but fuck alot of talent on the Westcoast.
-
I gotta go with Quik but Fredwreck is very close
-
DJ Quik. Close 2nd Dr. Dre.
-
prefer pooh and muggs to all the usual suspects.....
-
Alchemist should be near the top. At least... he should be considered one of the most consistant producers on the West Coast ;)
-
come are people serious on here? or are they saying who is your favorite producer, i mean fred wrecc the best producer on the west coast of all time? i don't know what to say sometimes, fred is good but the best producer of all time on the west? man i don't know what to say no more yell
-
Dr. Dre
-
is this a trick question?
obviously Dr. Dre lol.
i don't understand how when you ask for "best rapper" it's all the legends because of impact & all that bullshit; but then when you get asked about best producer you all get personal & shit lmfao.
-
I'd probably be confused too if when I grew up 50 cent was the most popular rapper out. I can definitely see how it could cloud your judgement.
-

NWA, The Chronic, Death Row days, 2001, Eminem, that's more "impact" than anyone else you can name, sport; forget just the West lmfao.
is saying Dr. Dre like so obvious that it's not cool to say him? like you have to prove to everyone else that you know more producers than Dr. Dre? i mean, power to ya if that keeps positive vibes flowing through you; but this shouldn't even be debateable lol.
ESPECIALLY after listening to some of you drag on how important "impact" & "revolutionizing" is.
-
i co-sign this post^^^^ yell

Until someone invents a point based rating system this will always boil down to someone's ears & opinion.
Anytime a topic like this gets posted it usually ends up being Stan Vs. Stan. (Hulk can beat up Superman,The Punisher would fuck up Batman etc.) If it were "What West Coast Producer Was The Most Successful", Dr. Dre wins hands down. I mean you have record sales, longevity, artists they've recorded with, and numerous other factors to take into consideration.

the thing is, this is a West Coast Forum & 90% of the forum is stuck way in the past; tell me Dr. Dre didn't produce their favorite work back in the day lol.
also, when people make threads like this; true, you can never find an answer, but there will always be an argument; even though a majority of people in this thread voted for Dre lol. :P
but it's like, it's only West Coast too; they cut out GZA & Premo & any of Dre's actual competition lol; so honestly, if you look at the results it's basically obvious Dre took this with the exception of those who prefer Quik's sound to Dre's, which i personally don't have any problem with.

the thing is, this is a West Coast Forum & 90% of the forum is stuck way in the past; tell me Dr.
I co-sign everything you said...The thing I have never understood... is that some people really GET UPSET that someone else's opinion differs from their own

Until someone invents a point based rating system this will always boil down to someone's ears & opinion.
Anytime a topic like this gets posted it usually ends up being Stan Vs. Stan. opinions are like dicks, only men should have them.

THE DOCTOR NO DOUBT. NO LOVE FOR T. MARTIN HUH. I WOULD SAY THAT IF YOU GOT THAT GUY RIGHT NOW TO DO A WHOLE ALBUM FOR YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST YOU WOULD NOT BE DISAPOINTED. HIS STYLE IS SO OLD SCHOOL BUT YET IT SOUNDS SO NEW.
-
terrace martin gets a lot of props on this forum, where have you been?
-
I know T-Martin gets love in this Forum. I am talking about this thread DORK.

you weren't specific in your first post, so that's not my fault.
i can't read your mind & the fact that you're calling me out says enough

Interesting looking back on this poll and the only people that REALLY stayed factors were Quik & Dre. No disrespect to the other producers, they probably just have had stuff going on in their lives and had to take a break.
-
Quik
-
Dre, hands down.

I'd probably be confused too if when I grew up 50 cent was the most popular rapper out. I can definitely see how it could cloud your judgement.
ESPECIALLY after listening to some of you drag on how important "impact" & "revolutionizing" is.
props, good post.
yeah some get mad when i put it in perspective, but there's no way around it

Anyone who doesn't vote Dr. Dre is kidding themselves really. No one can ever touch him as far as longevity and the quality of his production.
