Title: Going to L.A. in 2007...any tips on what I need to visit/where to go/etc...?
Post by: CRAFTY on July 10, 2005, 03:00:39 AM
Even though it's still 2 years to go, I thought I might as well start gathering some info on what places I need to visit in the Los Angeles area. It can be anything: big (good) music stores, clothing stores, nice avenues (Sunset Blvd), party spots, clubs, sports events, car shows, etc...anything.

Sikotic, Justin, SGV, E-Crazy, Da WCC Mack, R-Tistic, and the rest of you...I'm sure you can give me some suggestions on what I definitely need to hit up. (Justin's post about Santa Barbara (Isla Vista) for instance).

I'm only looking for spots in the LA area: Venice Beach, Santa Monica, Santa Barbara, etc...

Thanks in advance!

I went to LA in 2001, I was in a hotel in Figuoera (or some shit like that) street in downtown. My advices : the Staples Center  ;D, all the museums related to the cinema at Hollywood (Universal Studio....), Long Beach (remember there is a race around April n the aquarium (don't know the word in English)  ;D. Hollywood is ok, nothing special to me , always the same annoying gift shops. I 'll give u some places later  8)

I see...thanks for the feedback so far.
I was wondering: are there any avenues where all the shops are? Or are the shops located at many different streets?
Also, what is there to be found in:

Hollywood Blvd.
Figueroa
Wilshire
etc...
^^^^Are those streets mainly business complexes?

Another thing, since my parents are coming along with me, they'd like to know where all the fancy clothing stores are: Armani, Versace, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, etc...'cause they'll be spending quite some time there I think.

And where is Lakewood mall located? In Los Angeles? Or is Lakewood a city too?
Are there any other good shopping malls?

AT figueroa remember there is a sight seeing in which they speak lots of languages (including French) so they can help u a lot if you don't find a place. . On Hollywood Blvd there are some museums, Walk of Fame, lots of gift shops. Anyway I don't know how you wanna do to move but The Metro is a good mean : When I was there, only a few people used it n u u can go to Hollywood, Long Beach easily

.. like someone mentioned.. try to see the tv shows... when I was in LA with a few friends we were at the taping of the Jay Leno Show.. and although I never was a big fan of Leno it was really outstanding... and besides that... the usual tourist stuff like walk of fame and the hollywood sign and all that stuff.. besides that I donīt know.. donīt know any insider places... but try to see some sports games... I saw the Giants in San Francisco and it was 4+ hours of excitement (although the match itself sucked but just to experience the crowd was great) with 8$ a beer.. lol

Wow... 2 years from now. Some clubs may be closed, there may be new ones. It's too long away to call.

Just check out The Sunset Room and The Highlands (Which is where the Kodak Theatre is, across is where they film Jimmy Kimmel), both in Hollywood. Check out Universal City Walk, there's some good clubs there. Old Town Pasadena, too.

You gotta be 21 & Over for them and dress fairly nice. Except for The Saddle Ranch at City Walk.

Olvera St. would be coo to check if you're an out of towner.

Staples Center, if something is going on, is coo.

As far as Concerts and such, really it depends on when you're coming. Just start checking that like E said, around 2 weeks or so before you come.

Hit up Pinks, Tommy's, Roscoes Chicken N Waffles (Just so you can see why everyone talks about it. Btw, across the street, look for DJ Warrior and Strong's shop.)

Hit up:

Amoeba - 6400 Sunset Blvd, Hollywood (323) 245-6400

Fat Beats - 1722 N Vermont Ave, Los Feliz/Los Angeles, CA (323)663-3717

And then just go out on your own. Find shit that way.

yeah, santa barbara and isla vista aint evenpart of LA. its like 1.5 hours north. its still kinda considered southern california, but definitely not LA. theres not much to do in santa barbara, mostly just for like relaxing and shit, cos its by the ocean. isla vista is more for students, and their friends.. dont make a point to visit it, its only cool just for partying and shit, im sure u'll have much more worth while shit to do since its ur first time in california. but yeah you should hit up san francisco too, if yioure flying all the way here. i'll list off a few

San francisco

LA
disneyland - i dunno, if u have a little bro/sis or anything. self explanatory.
six flags magic mountain - crazy ass amusement park
hollywood - the theater and all that shit
melrose - dope shopping i guess, Rodeo for high class .
venice beach - this is what people think of when they think of LA. nice weather, by the ocean, fly breezies.
3rd street promenade - cool place to walk down
sunset strip - lotta clubs, key club, sunset house of blues, the Hustler store, whole lot of nice bars and clubs. i dont do either, so i aint really up on that shit. i just know the music scene.

Frisco ( more like new york city like, LA is more spread out)
chinatown is dope - good food
fishermans wharf - clam chowder fasho.
golden gate bridge
haight street (for your hip hop and dope gear)
union square (hella shopping)
alcatraz island - crazy out of commision prison housed infamous criminals
Frisco's dope too, just watch The Rock and you'll see why.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions...there's a few that I hadn't heard of until now, so I'll check them out (except Skid Row & stuff like that...lol, just because I'm from Belgium doesn't mean that I got my head up my ass. I know about Skid Row...).

Justin: I might hit up Frisco, but I'm not sure yet...depends on how long I'll be staying in Cali (I'm thinking 1 month).

2 More questions:

1) Where's Lakewood shopping mall located?
2) How long does it take to get to the following destinations by car when you're in downtown LA:
 - Venice Beach
 - Santa Monica
 - Santa Barbara
 - Beverly Hills
 - Sunset Blvd.
 - Hollywood Blvd.
 - Crenshaw Blvd.
 - Ventura Blvd.
 - Citywalk

----> I'm just curious to know whether these cities/avenues are far away from each other...

Downtown is far inland and there isn't much to do there, Avoid getting a hotel there if you can, try getting a place closer to the beach....anyways, here are the times with no traffic, but keep in mind theres almost always traffic in LA and it depends on the ammount of traffic on how much of a delay you get.

2) How long does it take to get to the following destinations by car when you're in downtown LA:

- Santa Monica - 30 mins
- Santa Barbara 1 hour and 30 mins
- Beverly Hills - 25 mins
- Sunset Blvd. - 20 mins
- Hollywood Blvd. 15 mins
- Crenshaw Blvd. ???
- Ventura Blvd. 20 mins
- Citywalk - 15-20 mins

Thanks a lot Sunset! That's all I needed to know :) *props*

Downtown is far inland and there isn't much to do there, Avoid getting a hotel there if you can, try getting a place closer to the beach....

Avoid getting a hotel downtown because of the price, or is there another reason? (and aren't the hotels near the beach quite expensive too? Since those are probably the hotels meant for tourists?)

Still got 1 question unanswered: where is Lakewood mall located (and is "Lakewood" a city itself)?

long beach is like south LA, so about half an hour i suppose..  i dunno not that much to do in Long Beach for tourists, couple real nice downtown areas, and the harbor and shit, the big ass queen mary boat.. Lakewood mall used to be pretty close to where i used to live off Bellflower in LB. its on lakewood blvd thats all i know, haha. you can hit up Vault 350 for some shows too, or Club v2o.

i dunno you dont really want to live in downtown LA, its cool for residents, well i mean its not that nice, but i mean if youre getting a hotel, its better to be posted up in a tourist area. try getting somewhere in Santa Monica or Venice, itd be a lot better, and a lot closer to everything. or even off sunset strip, shit would be dope.

if youre spending one month in california, you should definitely hit up Frisco, one month is hella long, two weeks in LA will be plenty. one week in frisco will already be way enough.

are you guys going to be renting a car or something? youre going to have to get use to the crazy driving in LA, all the traffic and angry and fast drivers, haha.

Yeah, I think we'll rent a car (but LA has got a bad reputation for bad traffic though, lol, so we'll see...).
So 2 weeks should be enough to visit LA? Even better then! How long is it from LA to Frisco and from LA to San Diego?

Is San Diego worth visiting?

Justin, from what I hear it apparently would be better to stay at a hotel in Venice or Santa Monica, but would you happen to know if it's cheaper than staying downtown?

(I'll get myself official info on hotels, car-renting & stuff like that in 2007 of course, but it's interesting to hear all of this already in advance...)

Definately check out Catalina Island.  You can take a boat out of Long Beach and go over there for a day.  Its definately more of an experience then a Mall or some shit like that.  I'd definately reccomend it.

hrm to make the trip easier, u should either start off at Frisco or San Diego and start from there, cos if u start at frisco u can just work your way down to La and then down to San deigo, or if u start in diego, just work ur way up to La and then frisco finally. LA - Frisco is about 5-6 hours. LA to San Diego, 2-2.5 hours. San Diego is hella down south, i almost never make it down there.

yeah two weeks is definitely enough time in LA for sure. i'm not too sure what goes on in San Diego, all i know is that its got some real nice areas by the beach, so i think SD is also more like a relaxing place. SD and La are all apsread out. if you want to see real city life you prob want to hit up San Francisco, cos that resembles a lot more like New York.

i'm sure u can find some cheap spots in san ta monica or venice too. downtown la might be the cheapest. but i really dont think theres a dramatic price difference.

Acgrundy: I'll keep that in mind, thanks for telling me! (Where exactly is Catalina Island? And what's there to see/do? Pure for tourists?)

I see...yeah I already thought about going to SD first, then LA & then finally SF...I won't have to go back and forth constantly.
Acgrundy: I'll keep that in mind, thanks for telling me! (Where exactly is Catalina Island? And what's there to see/do? Pure for tourists?)

Its off the coast of southern california.  its about an hour boat ride from the long beach port to it.  Its not purely for tourists, there is people living there.  Anyways I went there for 3 days and I got certified scuba diving.  the water there is beautiful, and they even have this like scuba diving/snorkeling underwater park type thing, its real cool.  there is lots of cool hiking to do, and its just a cool experience to check out the place.  I dunno, I think its a much better thing to experience than most of the stuff listed.  I could really care less about shopping and shit, as you can do that anywhere, its not usually how I spend my vacation time.

I hope you got a shitload of money to spend on this trip, cause just the hotels alone is gonna cost quite a bit of money for one month in cali.  then all the gas money and rental car.

what do you usually do for fun?  are you going with friends or family?

If you are planning on spending a month here, I'd definately tell you to take 3 days and go to las vegas, its not that far from LA, but there is a ton of fun to be had in vegas.

yea, it amazes me when people go to another country and they do not go to the countries food place, but instead to MC Donalds! OR KFC or whatever, why???!?!

^^^^Yeah I know what you mean, but the thing is...I plan on doing quite some shopping in Cali since I'm not able to get LOTS of albums/DVD's here (yeah, I buy off Amazon, but shipping costs are a mothafucker...). The same goes for clothes. From what I know it's a lot cheaper to buy certain brands there than it is here.

But I'll definitely look into Catalina Island, 'cause it does sound real nice! Thanks for the tip man.

Another thing, I've heard Pico Blvd. being mentioned several times in rap-songs...is it worth seeing too?

I can give a fuck about McDonalds, lol, 'cause we got that here as well (in fact, which country DOESN'T have a McDonalds?!). I'll definitely hit up those places that you mentioned (Pinks, Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles, etc...) and of course some fancy restaurants too. I remember reading a XXL article where the Four Seasons Hotel in LA was mentioned, and they said that you can catch Hollywood stars & NBA players there on Sundays...anyone know if that's true?

Oh really? Didn't know that. Isn't Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles situated on Pico? 'Cause I remember Ludacris saying in one of his verses "or hit up Roscoe's off Pico" or something like that...

I think my parents will love to eat at the Four Seasons restaurant, since they enjoy being in fancy(expensive) places, lol.

i regret that i didnīt really "do" anything when i was in LA. and i went with my cousins from NY and they knows a bunch of people in LA so we just smoked and drinked for a month straight with their friends and i regret that a lot coz thereīs a lot to see and do in LA except for gettin high and pissy drunk every day. but i did go to certain places that iīve heard about in various songs(Crenshaw for example)and i didnīt see what was so special about it to be mentioned over and over again in songs. but iīll definently do a whole lot of things when i goes to LA in September and i might go to Diego aswell if i get a week off from the job iīm gonna do when iīm over in the states.

Yeah I can imagine that, kinda like The Hilton and shit but the price card will be "nice" too eh? ;)
I mean, we're not poor, but we're definitely not that rich to stay for 2 weeks at the Four Seasons, you know?

I think we'll settle for a hotel somewhere at Santa Monica. I remember watching this soap on TV (think it was called Pacific Blue...with those cops on mountain bikes), and I know that they shot that serie at Santa Monica. I remember seeing lots of palmtrees, the beach and LOTS of fine women too, damn!

E-crazy your making me doubt your even from LA your giving some off ass info, 15 mins from LA to Long Beach my ass, with no traffic and going 80mph it takes atleast half an hour from Santa Monica to Long Beach.

Oh yeah and there is one MAIN pico blvd which is the one that goes all the way from Santa Monica all the way inland towards downtown, and thats the one all the rappers talk about, I've never seen any other picos but if there are others their not famous or major

If you don't wanna believe my timing, don't but im sure you will be on the safe side if you take my timing, anything faster than i said and your either lucky as hell or your flying over all the traffic

It's a whole lot I'd say you should see. Many people listed a lot of the spots already. Dependin on who you are with, I'm sure it's a lotta neighborhoods and locations you'd want to see that you have heard about in rap songs that are probably considered dangerous. If I am there when you come (depending on if I do Grad school in LA) I could take you everywhere around the city. I am very familiar with all of "black" LA (south central, mid city, watts), then Compton, Inglewood, Carson, Harbor City, Gardena, Hawthorne, all the beach cities (Redondo, Manhattan, Torrance, Palos Verdes, Venice, Santa Monica), Hollywood, Beverly Hills. I am not as familiar with Long Beach, some of Lakewood, some of Lynwood, Cerritos, a bit of Anaheim, and most of those cities on that side I just have an idea about where the main spots are. Even though some spots may be considered dangerous and all, I am usually cool wherever I need to go, and I got people in a lot of major hoods so I've never had any problems bein outta bounds.

-Crenshaw still cracks at times, but it's very on and off. It was crackin Saturday nights like 2002 but it stopped, and came back a few months ago until some ____s got shot there. On Sundays it cracks sometimes in the daytime. Also, it is a LOOONG ass street...it goes from Wilshire, which is basically 3rd St., all the way south past Torrance and into Palos Verdes Estates to where the street numbers are almost 300, if not past. I live right off Crenshaw and Rosecrans (worldwide let em recognize from Long Beach to Rosecrans)
-Sunset isn't really crackin for black people anymore, mainly because the gangbangers shut it down. But it's still the same clubs and the same flossin atmosphere.
-The original Roscoes is on Pico and La Brea, that's the one I always go to. It's one right off Sunset, one in LB and one on Manchester and Main, but the one most people go to is the original.
-The Slauson Swap Meet probably has a lot of things that LA people don't even pay attention to because we're used to it, but you might see things in there and be like "daaaamn they got that?!?!?!?!"
-The Barbary Coast is a strip club in Gardena, about 3 min. from me, and is the most famous black strip club in LA county by far. Hittman mentioned it on 2001 "Good to go girls...Like the Barbary coast girls" and Pac and Snoop used to go in there. Snoop and his people got into a big azz fight there back in the 90s.
-I'd assume the Black Wall Street headquarters will still be there in Compton in 2007.
-I never go near Main St.s hood, who is the set that 4 Life is composed of, mainly because I don't know anybody over in that area and have no reason to go. But I know where that's at.
-I could basically show you anything you mentioned or listed out, and it's not too many black hoods that I'd never want to drive through other than the Jungles, and the Nicks unless I'm with somebody I know from over there.
-Fox Hills Mall and Beverly Center are probably the best malls that you'd be interested in going to. Del Amo Mall in Torrance is/was the 2nd biggest mall in the nation, but they are going through major renovation, so I'd assume it'll be ready by 2007. I used to always go there between like 94-2000 when they fell off...I still go but it's not my mall of choice anymore.

But damn...you got a looong time!! I'm graduating from college in 2006 and that seems like a long way to go, so I'd assume nothin should really change before then other than the music scene which should hopefully be crackin once again.

R-Tistic: thanks for the info...and it would indeed be cool if you showed me around town a bit, I'd appreciate that a lot. But don't you think it will cause problems to drive through those places you mentioned (Compton, Gardena, etc..) since I'm white?

Yeah, the Slauson Swapmeet is another place that I hear a lot in West Coast rap songs, so I'd like to check that out as well. What exactly is there to be found in Swapmeets? Clothes, music, etc...?
Well, several people from MainStreet are registered at the IV Life forum, and they always tell me I need to come down there 'cause they appreciate what I do (promotion), they even invited me to their 4th of July picnic last week at Lake Parris. So yeah, I think I'll go down there with DJ Slip & Crisstyle and them...
The Fox Hills Mall...yeah, another place that I've heard a lot about. I'll definitely check that out along with those other shopping malls that you listed.

Once again, thanks for all the info man, I appreciate this a lot. See you (maybe) in LA then in July of 2007! 8)

LOL...I've never been the type to overhype LA. Gardena is where I live, and even though it's a crip neighborhood, it's not too dangerous at all, other than the apartments. It's about 75% black, 20% hispanic, and 5% white in my actual neighborhood. It was all white back in the 50s, and it's a few whites who still live there, so nobody would even care seein somebody white drive by. Actually, it's not too many places that white people can't drive...I'd say if you rolled through the Jungles or some of the Watts PJs, or through actual neighborhoods in Compton and in the bottoms in Inglewood, they would probably look at you real funny as if you were undercover, but usually they don't even pay attention. In most hoods I drive through where people don't know who I am, they'll usually mad dog, but I don't look like a gangbanger so they don't ever do anything. But I am usually never goin where I shouldn't be anyway.

Swapmeet has all that, clothes, music, arts n crafts, custom clothes, jewelry, food (it's suspect though).

Crafty, a lot of the places and things that R-tistic mentioned is shit i would suggest only a local or someone familiar with the area do, its not exactly the safest thing to not be familiar with the area and go down in those areas, I theres a good chance you will be fine and nothing will happen, but there also is a good chance something WILL happen, like stopping at the wrong stop sign at the wrong time and getting your car jacked, trust me that shit happens.

Yeah that's really how it is...it's so many misconceptions because of the rappers and what you see in movies, but to me it's all exagerrated. There are many things that you may not know about that would suprise you (in a bad way) but then there are many things overblown. You can definitely wear red and blue in moderation, all depending on where you are and who you are with, and what you look like. Hat signs can be worst than colors, and bandanas are always an instant indicator.

Well yeah, I wouldn't advise him to go through any deep hoods without somebody who's from there. Maybe since I grew up there, I feel comfortable and I don't stick out at all, and many people are at least familliar with my face so they usually don't just mess wit me for no reason. But if they saw somebody who looked nervous and had a nice car or nice jewelry or whatever, then yeah they might try to jack em. But at stop signs n shit like that, it's not too many places you gotta worry about because dudes don't just post up outside waitin to jack people like they did in the 80s.

yea thatīs the thing that my cousins friends told me about(they told me to ship red Philly hats,Boston hats when we was gonna go to CPT). they also told me not to wear certain color combinations aswell coz some people automatically connect certain color combinations with a specific neighborhood. donīt know how true it is but thatīs what they told me and i followed suit. if i enjoy my 3 1/2 months stay in LA later this year i might make the move over there permanent.

Yeah, 7th Street & Pine Ave are where you can find dope shopping spots...plenty of sites to see, but 7th St. can have a lot of traffic in tha afternoon & early evenings...tha theater down at Pine is good but tha one down at tha Pike is better...

PCH stands for Pacific Coast Highway, it goes along tha coast of Cali through Diego, LA, & SF, & up tha Pacific Coast...

Tha Pyramid is down at Cal State Long Beach, they have basketball games & other athletic events that take place there...

Shoreline Village has nice shops, great food, & they also got good entertainment...you can have sailing lessons there too...haven't done it before but I know that you can do it there...Queen Mary is nearby so you can see that too while you're down there...

Remember what I said on pg. 1. go visit Nickerson Gardens. The "concrete jungle" can get real stressful real quick.  Go to the Gardens to see some awesome floral displays and botanical plants.  They will help you relax.  They're to die for ;D

also wanted to add that you should check out 7th Street, PCH, & Pine Ave in Long Beach...& check out tha Queen Mary, Shoreline Village, tha Pyramid at Cal State, & the Long Beach Aquarium...

Is 7th Street & Pine Ave shopping streets?
What's PCH?
What's there to be found in Shoreline Village & the Pyramid?

R-Tistic: I wasn't planning on going in those hoods all by myself, but let's say that I'm with you that day...would I need to be worried then?

Nah you definitely wouldn't have anything to worry about. That's not me talkin like I'm a boss or got a rep either, that's just because most places that I mentioned are cool to just roll thru and look at, and I know people at most spots. At the swap meet, it's usually a grip of gangbangers in there, but most of them are mindin their own business. The only time I (almost) got banged on at the Slauson was when I had on all blue, and some females behind me were talkin very loud but indirectly to me...."I can't believe mafuckas is wearin all blue to the fuckin slauson, that shit blow my mind BLOOD....yeah these niggas must be young as fuck to be wearin that shit in here, he will get fucked up, on bloods..." and I turned around and they were lookin right at me. But even when I was in there, I saw a few bloods and they didn't say shit, and it was a fuckin Polo shirt and regular sized jeans n white forces, so those girls were just bein extra'd out.

Probably stupid question...but I was wondering. How much is it for uhm, let's say a Cheeseburger? And is it overall pretty cheap to eat at or rather expensive?

It costs about 2 dollars for a hamburger/cheeseburger and about 3 for a double cheeseburger...it's more expensive than McDonalds but it's definitely worth tha prices & tha wait...

I graduate at the end of June and I was supposed to fly to LA in either July or August '07, but since a trip to Los Angeles & Vegas needs to be thoroughly planned beforehand - and I haven't got ANY time to focus on that right now - I'll postpone my trip to July/August '08. See you guys then.
