Jungle Brothers – Straight Out The Jungle (1988)

Outkast – ATLiens (1996)

These are albums that I had on the list at one point and ended up getting cut for some reason.  Straight Out The Jungle really should have been on it but I realized after I started the list that I forgot about Follow The Leader so unfortunately the JBs ended up getting cut.  I'd drop 2001 for that.  Other changes I would make, ATLiens and Me Against The World would make it and I'd cut The Don Kiluminati: The 7 Day Theory and either Whut? Thee Album or Wanted: Death Or Alive.

How did the big name producers do on this list?  Here's how many albums each of them got:

Dr. Dre...6
Bomb Squad...3
Rick Rubin...3
RZA...3
Erick Sermon...2
Marley Marl...2
Prince Paul...2
Pete Rock...1
Da Beatminerz...1
DJ Premier...0

Breakdown by year:

1984: 1
1985: 2
1986: 1
1987: 2
1988: 8
1989: 5
1990: 5
1991: 4
1992: 4
1993: 4
1994: 5
1995: 3
1996: 4
1997: 0
1998: 1
1999: 1

Breakdown by region:

East...35
West (including The D.O.C.)...10
South...4
Mid-West...1

Albums that got 5 mics in THE SOURCE that didn't make it...
Eric B. & Rakim - Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em
The Notorious B.I.G. - Life After Death
Jay-Z - The Blueprint
Nas - Stillmatic
Scarface - The Fix

...and the ones that did make it
A Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels And The Paths Of Rhythm
Ice Cube - AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
Brand Nubian - One For All
De La Soul - De La Soul Is Dead
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Nas - Illmatic
Outkast - Aquemini

Top 100?  Other albums (other than the seven above) that would make that:
(this is pretty much of the top of my head in random order)

Beastie Boys – Paul's Boutique
Jay-Z – The Blueprint
Eminem – The Marshal Mathers LP
Goodie Mob – Soul Food
The Pharcyde – Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde
Mobb Deep – Hell On Earth
The Roots – Illadelph Halflife
The Notorious B.I.G. – Life After Death
Jungle Brothers – Done By The Forces Of Nature
Gang Starr - Hard To Earn
Gang Starr - Moment Of Truth

how isnt jay-z blueprint on this list

because he isn't a big Jay-Z fan.  no matter what his excuse is.....

That's bullshit.  I like Jay-Z, it's just not a top 50 album.

Question though... I don't think his records are all that great, and I think as an emcee he's mad overrated, but where did Eminem go on your list? Did he just not make it with SSLP and MMLP?

I don't think can put those above any of the albums on the list.  MMLP is top 100, SSLP maybe.

I think you should have included:

ATLiens - Really, I´m not the only one who thinks this is the best Outkast album. Maybe the most beautiful hiphop album ever, and ten times better than "Southernplayalistic..."

Paul´s Boutique - Some of the greatest work in sampling ever AND one of the most important records that helped non-hiphop fans get into the music at least a bit. A LOT better than "Licensed To Ill" and much more innovative

since this is, of course a top 50, you´d have to leave 2 albums out in order to include these. I would leave out:

Breaking Atoms - Good, but not HIGHLY influential IMO. Also, it´s not immaculate, has its weaker moments and is nothing hiphop feeds off that much today

One For All - I admit I hadn´t even heard the whole thing when you posted it up, but IMO this is not a top 50 record either. It´s good, but while Brand Nubian are pretty respected and put out some quite good shit, they never had a huge impact, at least not one that I could see

...or you could have replaced the 1st Outkast album with the 2nd

...I would have ranked higher:

Reasonable Doubt (top 40)
Mecca & the Soul Brother (top 15)
Makaveli (top 35)
Road To The Riches (top 30)
Death Certificate (top 30)
The Diary (top 30)

I would have ranked lower:

Enta Da Stage (top 50)
People´s Instinctive Travels... (top 30)
Licensed To Ill (top 45 or maybe 40)
Efil4zaggin (top 45)

Don't agree with all that but certainly all points and opinions here are reasonable.

''The Marshall Mathers LP'' had a huge influence on hip-hop...think of all the controversy circa 1999/2000. Not to mention, he proved that a white person can rap well, as opposed to Vanilla Ice who was the only white rapper before him to achieve huge sales - yet with zero credibility. I can see how the overall quality of the album may prevent it from reaching top 50 though...compared to some of the others featured on the Top 50 it may be slightly out of reach. Still a brilliant album IMO.

MMLP is one of the most violent and perverted albums of all time.  Only a few songs killed the mood of the album.

IMO ATLiens definitley should have made the list since I personally consider that their strongest album, but I also think that Outkast should have had more than only one album on the list.

That's cool of course, but I have to agree with some other fellow posters that the MMLP is an outstanding LP, inwhateverway you look at it. Eminem had unlimited skill MC-wise back in the day.

Good looking on this list, you put up some nice stats there. Yet I'm wondering about some albums.

Big L - Lifestylez ov da poor & dangerous
Capone -N- Noreaga - The war report
Big Punisher - Capital punishment
Eazy-E - Eazy-duz-it
Method Man - Tical
LL Cool J - Mama said knock you out
Onyx - Bacdafucup
Sticky Fingaz - Black trash
Xzibit - 40 dayz & 40 nightz
Westcoast Connection - Bow down
Luniz - Operation Stakola
Redman - Dare iz a darkside
Tha Alkaholiks - 21 & Over
WC & The Maad Circle - Ain't a damn thang changed
Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill
Souls of Mischief - 93 til infinity

They may not all have been top30 albums, but those are definately some really great albums and the majority of them is seen as certified classic. What's your thoughts on those albums regarding the top 50 list?

Besides, you should add this topic to the sticky thread as well!

No way Black Star or Quality would make it.  As good as they may be, they just aren't in the same league as any of those albums.  Very minimal impact.

I just noticed you didn't have any Gangstarr album in you top 50  :o

I've addressed this.  Basically thier problem is that they really lack a stand out album, thus you don't put an album name and just put "any Gangstarr album".

Yet I'm wondering about some albums.

There are only so many albums you get in the top 50.  I can't see cutting The Score for Bow Down or Reasonable Doubt for Bacdafucup.  All good albums but don't have much on any of the top 50.

I wasn't really saying they SHOULD have been in the list, more like they COULD have been. After all, albums like Bacdafucup, Eazy-duz-it and Mama said knock you out definately have been big and influential. Not to down that album, but how much influence has for example Com's Resurrection had? I feel like some of the albums I listed there definately deserve to be up there, but like you already said a long time ago, it's been a close call for the albums ranked around the 30s and 40s. I was just wondering about your reasons for chosing these albums not to be listed, not even as honorable mentions.

Besides that, is there any chance of a hookup for the honorable mentions? I would really love to hear the Biz Markie and Jungle Brothers albums  8)
