Title: NEED INFO ON: Drum Machines, Keyboards, Microphones, etc
Post by: Shawn Nutt on September 03, 2005, 10:33:28 AM
I need some good equipment. Can anyone name me some trusted brands that I could check out? What do ya'll use? Price range...?

I need a drum machine, a keyboard, a microphone, some good headphones... basically everything you need to make decent music.

I heard Roland is a good drum machine brand.

How much is your bank roll?

This is the keyboard I use. It's about $3,000.  It's got a drum machine built in to it which is nice. It's a little fancy if you are just starting out though.

When looking for a mic, definately don't go less than $100. The sound quality is junk and it falls apart after a while.

These are pretty good. For headphones, you don't need to go all out, but at least throw $50 on them.

Then you'll need an analog mixer ^ or a computer based digital mixer (Pro Tools is good).

Now all you need is a MIDI converter like an MBox (we got a cheaper one than the one above) and a computer to edit with (preferrably a Mac).

So for good, crisp sound, you'll probably want to have between $3000 - $5000 to spend. If you are just looking for a hobby, you'd probably only need $1000 or $2000.

Well I'm gonna produce, so I'd rather buy all the good shit right off the start than spend little money and build up. I aint got much right now, cuz Im getting laid off from my job in 3 weeks. It was only a summer thing. So I guess I need to make some quick cash...  lol

Very little in my mind, but compared to anyone here it's probably nothing. I want to learn on my own equipment, but that probably wont happen. I need someone to help me with it cuz I dont know anyone who can produce rap/hip-hop. :'(

It translates the signal from the keyboard on to the computer.

I used to use Acid a couple years ago, but using a keyboard is a lot easier and has a lot more sounds.

Go to Tom Lee music on Granville.  The top floor (4th floor), is all mics, keyboards, samplers ect.  You can try everything out and play around with them.  Just talk to one of the guys that work there.
