Title: For Everyone that hates on Kanye West
Post by: eKardz on January 05, 2006, 12:05:22 AM
hey mama off of late registration has to be one of the best songs ive heard in the longest time.  i been listnein to this song so much lately and its real good.  got some real meaning and he pours his heart into this track.  when i listen to it i feel like it was written for me and my mom.  for you westcoast fans that like 2pac dear mama, which i love also, gotta hear this track its right there with it.

"Hey Mama"

[Chorus]
(Hey Mama), I wanna scream so loud for you, cuz I'm so proud of you
Let me tell you what I'm about to do, (Hey Mama)
I know I act a fool but, I promise you I'm goin back to school
I appreciate what you allowed for me
I just want you to be proud of me (Hey Mama)

[Verse 1]
I wanna tell the whole world about a friend of mine
This little light of mine and I'm finna let it shine
I'm finna take yall back to them better times
I'm finna talk about my mama if yall don't mind
I was three years old, when you and I moved to the Chi
Late December, harsh winter gave me a cold
You fixed me up something that was good for my soul
Famous homemade chicken soup, can I have another bowl?
You work late nights just to keep on the lights
Mommy got me training wheels so I could keep on my bike
And you would give anything in this world
Michael Jackson leather and a glove, but didn't give me a curl
And you never put no man over me
And I love you for that mommy cant you see?
Seven years old, caught you with tears in your eyes
Cuz a nigga cheatin, telling you lies, then I started to cry
As we knelt on the kitchen floor
I said mommy Imma love you till you don't hurt no more
And when I'm older, you aint gotta work no more
And Imma get you that mansion that we couldn't afford
See you're, unbreakable, unmistakable
Highly capable, lady that's makin loot
A livin legend too, just look at what heaven do
Send us an angel, and I thank you (Hey Mama)

[Chorus]

[Verse 2]
Forrest Gump mama said, life is like a box of chocolates
My mama told me go to school, get your doctorate
Somethin to fall back on, you could profit with
But still supported me when I did the opposite
Now I feel like it's things I gotta get
Things I gotta do, just to prove to you
You was getting through, can the choir please
Give me a verse of "You, Are So Beautiful To Me"
Can't you see, you're like a book of poetry
Maya Angelou, Nicky Giovanni, turn one page and there's my mommy
Come on mommy just dance wit me, let the whole world see your dancing feet
Now when I say Hey, yall say Mama, now everybody answer me (Hey Mama)

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
I guess it also depends tho, if my ends low
Second they get up you gon get that Benzo
Tint the windows, ride around the city and let ya friends know (Hey Mama)

[Verse 3]
Tell your job you gotta fake em out
Since you brought me in this world, let me take you out
To a restaurant, upper echelon
Imma get you a jag, whatever else you want
Just tell me what kind of S-Type Donda West like?
Tell me the perfect color so I make it just right
It don't gotta be Mother's Day, or your birthday
For me to just call and say (Hey Mama)

[Chorus (with variations)]

It is a great song. I've been feeling Addiction lately too. By 2005 standards, Kanye has one of the best hip hop albums out right now.

Dude's ego makes me wanna hate him and his music though.

Kanye is a very smart.

His marketing makes him like the Muhammad Ali of Hio-Hop right now. People hated Ali, but they still paid to see him box. People hate on Kanye, but he puts out classic CDs so people will buy it, hoping they can diss it. Kanye still ends up rich. Very smart.

He barely broke even with this album, if he even did. Ali was the biggest draw of his time moneywise, Kanye is nowhere near the most bought artist. I always questioned how legit some of Ali's matches were but I never questioned hid ability to make more money than anyone else. And people didn't hate him all that much. They liked to watch him play the pro wrestler in boxing. It was fun. Every 60+ year old I talk to says he was very popular and not very hated. The booing in the Listin matches were more about everyone thinking they were fixed rather than hating Ali. Kanye sucks at music in my opinion and he doesn't make all that much money. It just seems that way because of the hype.

I liked Hey Mama better off the advance too)kanye always changes his songs too much), the new one seems too busy.  Musically, it is very impressive though.

I don't really get how people hate on Kanye's music though..............the guy puts TIME AND EFFORT into his music, something very few rappers try to do.  He PUSHES THE ENVELOPE, does not rap about the same tired ass shit, and experiments with different sounds, etc.

He had much success with College Dropout, but didn't do a carbon copy even though it would have sold a couple million guaranteed.

And who gives a fuck if he is gay or not? Speaking out against homophobia does not make someone gay, nor does dressing up once in awhile.  Besides, WHY DO YA"LL CARE HOW SOMEONE DRESSES OR ACTS ANYWAY, its just music!!!

And SHALLOW, WHO THE FUCK CARES IF KANYE MAKES MONEY OR NOT???  The fact that he was willing to spend 3 million on an album, or that he produced his own THorugh the Wire video when noone believed in him should tell you he's about the art and making quality music, not money.  Besides, the fact that his record label (GOOD MUSIC) is nominated for 20 GRAMMIES should bring in a little money, as well as all the other joints he does for artists.  You realize artists don't make their money off cd's. but off touring........and have you any idea how successful the "tough the sky" tour was.............

I can see how people could not feel kanye's music, but calling him gay, saying he has not talent is ridiculous.  He is one of the best overall artists in hiphop and has succeeded despite being a little different, and its pretty hard to deny his influence on the game.............

The guy I responded to cares about money. He compared him to Ali in that respect. Ali was the biggest money maker in sports in his prime and Kanye is not the biggest money maker in music. He's not even close. His CD had to go 2.2 or 2.4 platinum to break even, it barely did that, and his concert tour wasn't all that high the revenue list. )P.S., I think I heard him say he spent 600 grand on the album, not 3 million, but I don't have any proof. Can you proove he spent 3 mil?)

Here's the list;

1. The Rolling Stones $162.0 / $133.98

2. U2 $138.9 / $96.92

3. Celine Dion $81.3 / $136.04

4. Paul McCartney $77.3 / $135.46

5. Eagles $76.8 / $104.17

6. Elton John $65.8 / $102.46

7. Kenny Chesney $61.8 / $54.63

8. Dave Matthews Band $57.0 / $47.09

9. Neil Diamond $47.3 / $63.02

10. Jimmy Buffett $41.0 / $76.49

11. Mötley Crüe $39.9 / $46.48

12. Green Day $34.8 / $38.07

13. Toby Keith $31.6 / $46.11

14. Rascal Flatts $28.2 / $34.92

15. Bruce Springsteen $26.3 / $81.00

16. Gwen Stefani $24.2 / $54.46

17. Coldplay $24.1 / $40.80

18. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers $23.6 / $38.05

19. Barry Manilow $22.7 / $153.93

20. "Anger Management Tour" $21.6 / $64.03

Kanye is nowhere on the list.

As for the quality of his music. I don't care for it. I think his lyrics are simple and often stupid or goofy. I think his sample are blatant and not very altered or creative (I listen to the originals of Jesus Walks, Diamonds Are Forever, Through the Wire, or Gold Digger and like the old ones better). I think his flow and delivery is mediocre. I think he is great at one thing though; he is amazing at convincing people (stupid teenage white girls) that he is a musical genius. It doesn't take much genius to sample and loop great old songs and spit pretentious nursery rhymes over them, but that's just my opinion. (of course I have hated him as a producer ever since he sample CSN's Chicago for Beanie Sigel's The Truth and didn't give credit, and people thought he composed it).

The numbers proove that he isn't the top selling guy in the industry. Gwen Stefani sold just as many copies and made more in ticket sales, and she hasn't been around that much longer. Em hasn't been around all that much longer and his album sold more copies than both of Kanye's combined and Em's album sucked. All I'm saying is that Kanye is not Ali right now.

Yeah but she's not a legend like the top of the list and her solo album is way different than the No Doubt stuff that sold, and the fan base is different. Everyone I know who owns Kingdom hates the Stefani album.

That doesn't take away from the fact that she is still a way more established artist than Kanye is, which explains her larger record sales.....like those really matter quality-wise.

Okay fine. Rascal Flatts aren't any more established that Kanye. Two double platinum albums, and they have only been around for a couple years.

And all I said was that Kanye isn't THE top earner. I never said he wasn't popular. I still think he sucks though.

John Legend - Get Lifted, Common - Be, Jay-Z - Blueprint, College Dropout and Late Registration all got either XXLs, 5 Mics or any other perfect score, plus all the awards, the critics love him, the haters hate him, and the public his shit and he sells out areas across the county. So can Lil Bow Wow, but he gets trashed on here all the time. I never said Kanye can't make it or will go broke, although I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up like Hammer, I also wouldn't surprised if he saves his money well. Either way I see him being as influential as Q Tip is now 5 years from now.

Q Tip has people begging for a Tribe Called Quest reunion 10 years after their last hit, and as part of Tribe has two 5 mic albums, and is considered a legend to most backpack rappers. I think Kanye can handle that. He claims to be the modern Pete Rock, who is not mentioned now. But then again many artist were huge at there time, released classics and no one remembers them now. Ask Big Daddy Kane, a top 10 in anyone's list, Nas, a top 3 in my personal list and with producing it's worst, as does anyone remember Eric B., or anyone not named Dr. Dre really. Kanye has great music, and does not get trashed like Lil' Bow Wow. The difference, Kanye ghost-produced your favorite songs, then produced your favorite songs, and now is producing everyone elses favorite song, well Bow Wow has his ghost writers.

Shallow:  Kanye himself said he'd ahve to make 2.6 million to break even on the album..........i read it on MTV a while back....

ANyway, i think the fact that Kanye has fans ranging from "stupid teenage white girls" like SHallow said, to so-called "backpackers" to people who have never before listened to hiphop due to the prevalence of violence in anything commercially successful, and that should be enough to silence the haters.

The Grammy nominations, 5 mic/xxl/5 star ratings, all the while breaking the trend of the gangster/pimp rapper, should be  enough for most people to at least accept the guy has talent and has had a huge impact on the game.   Shallow:  when you found out Dre did absolutely NOTHING to change the beat for Nuthin but a G Thang, did you start hating on Dre?  You realize hiphop has always been built on samples, right? Some are blatant ripoffs, others original takes on old songs.  Either way, most, if not all, successful producers in hiphop and R&B unfortunately sample profusely.............

and Q-tip still gets mad respect from peeps in the game, but like most older-school mc's seems to be forgotten by the newer generation.  ANd Kanye will still be here 5 years from now, i think having two albums in a row nominated for ALBUM OF THE YEAR(not rap album) should tell you that..........

I'll respond to everything aimed in my direction.

I never said anything against Q Tip's talent and contribution, I was only looking at his current impact, and I wasn't saying Kanye is as worse as Bow Wow, I was using Bow Wow as an example of a guy universally seen as a no talent on this board and he is living just fine despite the fact he sucks. This was in response to someone saying Kanye is still striving no matter if I criticize him or not.

As for the samples. I realize there have always been samples in hip hop and I don't have a problem with it when the hook of the song, the talent, lies in the lyrics, the flow, the word play, the delivery, the rhyme patterns, or even the DJ work. Primo sampled a lot of blatant rip offs, but Primo could excel greatly with the turntable and listening to him at the end of a song or in the middle, is like listening to a great guitar solo. I lost a lot of respect for Dre's abilities when I realized he was no better than Puffy when it came to ripping off old songs. Puffy got more slack because he sampled known hits that everyone knew weren't his while Dre and Kanye take a lot of obscure songs that some people belive were composed by them.

I fail to see the genius in Kanye as people seem to claim (mostly him). They talk  about him like he sists in his room with a piano and composes the instrumentals on his album. He just takes an old song, loops the best part, performs mediocre raps sometimes not even written by him and he gets called a genius? The only difference between his skills and Puffy's is that his get some street respect. So what if he some lyrics. The lyrics are shit, and the messages he comes out with only pretend to be different than the rest of the game. Work Out Plan still pushed the hip hop misogyny on the public with it's video. Jesus Walks only pretended to be spiritual. Gold Digger is just another "the bitch is doing me in" type of song. Content aside, I think the lyrics suck. When I read them, no matter if it's Gold Digger or Roses, they sound like nursery rhymes written by a teenager. I don't take them serious, I don't take his delivery serious, and I don't take him serious. He's mediocre, and when mediocre artists get popular they often get confused for amazing because they're popular. Sometimes they last and sometimes they don't. Either way I don't like the guy's music. If you guys want to like his music that's fine, I'm not telling you not to. I'm just telling you I don't like it, and I'm telling you why.

Dont car what people say that song is great and i was feeling it

To me classic track that relates to a majority of college and high school students that try to just make their parents proud in making of themselves

hey mama off of late registration has to be one of the best songs ive heard in the longest time.  i been listnein to this song so much lately and its real good.  got some real meaning and he pours his heart into this track.  when i listen to it i feel like it was written for me and my mom.  for you westcoast fans that like 2pac dear mama, which i love also, gotta hear this track its right there with it.

"Hey Mama"

I fucks with him.since he dissed bush stupid ass....big-up.

Shallow - Props for arguing your points, which are valid.  I agree that its somewhat wack when songs are completely ripped off.  I hold Puffy in a different light than I do Dre or Kanye though.  Puffy blatantly and unapologetically ripped off songs that were already number 1 hits.  And it wasn't like he took 1 element from those songs, and looped it (i.e. breakbeats).  He basically took the song, and threw a rapper on it, and inevitably it blew up.  But just because Dre and Kanye do it from more obscure music doesn't necessariy make it right, but to me, its more credible.  Thats how hip-hop was born - cats didn't have instruments back in the day, but they had records that they could jack instrument sounds from so thats what they did.

Listen to Stranded on Death Row from the Chronic.  The drums on that song are jacked from "When the Levy Breaks" from Led Zeppelin.  Now thats a well known song to some, but it's not like he did to capitalize of the fame of that song.  He did it because those drums SMACK.

I obviously hold Dre in a higher light than Puffy. It just gets me mad when people give him credit for something like G Thang like he composed it. On 2001 he didn't even give credit. When you take different aspects from different songs and put them together to form a new instrumental then I consider it it artistic. When you base your entire song off one or or aspects of a song you ripped off and not even have the decency to give credit then I have no respect for that.

I know what hip hop was built on, but I don't buy the fact that they didn't or couldn't have played instruments. Musicianship was a key aspect of black society in the years where they had it alot worse and were a lot poorer. That doesn't mean I don't respect the art of sampling or DJing, but I don't consider it very artistic unless it's something like taking one or two little noises from a song and mixing and scratching it to sound like something good, or when the stolen instrumental serves as a back drop for the important part of the song which would be the rapper.

Word.  I don't like people with no originial talent.  They gotta be snatchin' beats to make it heat.  It's all bogus to me.  I bet you that many  rappers/ producers don't know how to compose.

As a composer and musician of course Scott Stotch is better than Dre. Is he a better producer? No. Dre is a great producer and I'm sure Kanye is too. I just think it's bullshit that they get prause for being composers. A producer guides the record. Tells the rapper how to rap, or fizes a few parts of the verse to suit the song, changes the instruments round, adjusts the tempo of the song, chooses which parts should be focused on and which should be in the background (for example the flute will be really loud while the piano is soft), helps mix the record, and works on the sound quality, (sometimes a great producer chooses a very distorted sound rather than a crystal clear one because it suits the record better).

It's real simple, it's just too many hip hop fans confuse the word producer with music writer.
