MTV To Produce Tupac Documentary

The late rapper Tupac Shakur will be the subject of a feature-film documentary to be released in theaters next year. The as-yet-untitled film will be created by MTV Films -- which releases movies in association with sister company Paramount Pictures -- and Amaru Entertainment, the company founded by Shakur's mother, Afeni Shakur. Lauren Lazin, MTV VP of news and documentaries, will direct. Amaru/Interscope will issue the soundtrack; in addition, Pocketbooks/MTV Books is planning the first official Shakur biography

"The past five years have been extremely painful watching and listening while others incorrectly attempted to define who my son really was," Afeni Shakur said yesterday (Dec. 10). "Now, through patience, the strength of my family, and faith in God, the true story of Tupac will finally be shared with the world."

The rapper continues to make a posthumous impact on the charts. In April, a double-disc collection of archival material on Amaru/Death Row/Interscope, hit No. 1 on The Billboard 200 with U.S. sales of more than 426,800 copies, according to SoundScan.

Shakur died Sept. 13, 1996, in Las Vegas after being shot six days earlier by unknown assailants. The case remains unsolved.
