Veteran rapper Too Short is in a little bit of trouble, money-wise, and may lose an Oakland recording studio he recently opened unless he coughs up more than $1 million from a settle dating back to the mid-90s for a car crash.According to InsideBayArea.com, the rapper (real name: Todd Shaw) was involved in a head-on collision in his hometown, resulting in the death of 22-year-old James Ellerbee and seriously injured the driver.
Although reports indicate Too Short was not directly responsible for the accident, Ellerbee's parents brought on a $17 million lawsuit against the rapper, which later resulted in a $1 million settlement Too Short agreed to before the case even went to court.
Court documents showed that the rapper was uninsured and legally drunk during the time of the accident.
After almost 12 years, Too Short has been unable to pay the entire amount, and now local police have been ordered to seize the equipment the rapper installed in the UpAllNite studio, which he opened in May, to pay the remainder of the settlement now totaling more than $1.1 million, including interest charges.
The rapper's lawyer, Phaedra Parks, told InsideBayArea.com that he has paid $500,000 over the years, but has not been able to pay the entire amount at once.
Court documents, however, say he's paid just $282,000.
At press time, Sheriff's deputies have yet to seize the recording equipment at the UpAllNite Studio, claiming they've tried, but have been unsuccessful in serving Too Short with a court order.
