John Singleton working on a game

September 23, 2004 - In an announcement made early Thursday morning, it was revealed that the streaking publisher and developer Midway Games has begun development on a brand new action/adventure known as Fear & Respect. Set directly in the middle of South Central Los Angeles, the brand new game is being created in collaboration with the world's most famous South Central expert, John Singleton.

Singleton, who first gained acclaim with his 1991 film Boyz N the Hood, was long regarded as one of the best new director's of the 1990s -- and has put together such films as Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Rosewood, and the Shaft remake. His next film is the Marvel comic book adaptation of the adventures of Power Man & Iron Fist (minus Iron Fist) called Luke Cage.

Scheduled for release in the fourth quarter of 2005, Fear & Respect will appear on both the Xbox and the PS2 and follow the realistic exploits of a reluctant gang member. Newly out of prison and a formerly retired "OG" (Original Gangsta), the as of yet unnamed character is forced back into the life of a criminal when uncontrollable circumstances drive him to it. And though the specifics of the gameplay have not yet been revealed, it has been confirmed that players will be able to partake in both shooting and hand-to-hand combat sequences, and that the entire story will take place during the sweltering hot summer months. It's also been hinted that there will be a "respect" system, not unlike Sammy's upcoming videogame translation of The Shield, but the details of which were not expounded upon.

Expect to see more on Fear & Respect sometime early next year.
