This new Rock band The Darkness
« on: November 16, 2004, 09:55:49 AM »
Has anyone heard of these guys? I guess they're pretty big, that song I Believe In A Thing Called Love is pretty big from what I understand. I picked up the album this morning, listening right now. They remind me of David Bowie circa 72-73 as far as sound goes.

Most hip-hop is now keyboard driven, because the majority of hip-hop workstations have loops and patches that enable somebody with marginal skills to put tracks together,...

Unfortunately, most hip-hop artists gravitated towards the path of least resistance by relying on these pre-set patches. As a result, electric guitar and real musicians became devalued, and a lot of hip-hop now sounds the same.

They're too clean for me to consider them like Bowie. Obviously not as good yet, but the sound is way to clear and it sounds polished. Bowie's old stuff sounded raw. Young Americans, and the Ziggy stuff were fucking classic.

They've got a quality of the pre-Young Americans/Ziggy phase, more of the sound of Hunky Dory and The Man Who Sold The World. Not nearly the same level of quality but the singer has a similar style and their guitarist reminds me of Mick Ronson.
