The 20 Greatest Hiphop Producers Ever - #19

#19 – DJ Pooh

Defining Track: Ice Cube – It Was A Good Day

Known as a classic west coast producer, Pooh actually made his production debut on LL Cool J’s Bigger and Deffer album. But it was his affiliation with Ice Cube in the early nineties that made Pooh a recognised top level hiphop producer. The tracks he produced on Cube’s The Predator album were all top notch, and the hit from the album It Was A Good Day was pure westcoast at its finest. After producing tracks on albums by the Dogg Pound and 2 Pac on Death Row, Pooh then teamed up with Snoop Dogg for Tha Doggfather, his second album. Producing five of the tracks on the album including the hit “Snoops Upside Your Head”, and mixing the large majority of the tracks, Pooh was central to the sound of Snoops second album. Although lacking the vigor of Snoop’s Dr Dre produced debut album, the album was still a success, and Pooh’s production on the album was dope. He released his first album Bad Newz Travelz Fast in 1997, but since then not much has been heard of Pooh, but there is no doubting his place in production history, simply for being one of earlier pioneers of that west coast sound that dominated the early-mid nineties.

He's pretty underrated as a producer to me.

"When We Ride" (from Disc 2 of AEOM) is one sick beat.

His two beats on "Dogg Food" are my favorite Pooh tracks, along with "It Was A Good Day"

"It Was A Good Day" is a classic beat but nothing was really changed from the original Isley Brothers sample.

"When We Ride", "Smooth", "New York New York" are true signs of Pooh's talent cause those aren't sampled.

He definitely is underrated though especially for his work with Cube.
