About rappers droppin videos too late...
« on: September 25, 2001, 10:25:51 PM »
Yo, someone just posted a thread about Xzibit new video, Get Your Walk On, being just released... It made me realize how some artists really mess up their hype by waiting way too long to release 2nd or 3rd videos. It certainly has to do with bullshit greedy ass labelheads but what do y'all think about this "trend" of late videos. Is it really helping the artist's sale or not?? Think about the following for example:
+ XZIBIT - Get Your walk On (remix or not): WAAAYYY too late for Xzibit sales, especially if it's a remix. I can't believe Loud didn't drop it earlier with X having sold 1.7 mil by the time his 2nd single dropped (that's what he said on BET's Rap City)
+ D12 - Fight Music: I'm afraid they waited a lil too long to release this one. I love it but I don't know if it's gonna boost sales... They just fuckep up on that promo for D12 though coz the "Shit On You" video got played late at night on BET way before the album dropped and on very very rare occasions... Then MTV didn't really play "Purple Hills"...
+ EMINEM - Stan: Should have been the 2nd single off MMLP. I love "The Way I Am" to death but Stan was so crazy anticipated as soon as the album dropped, radio started playing the song just like a regular single. And I remeber, it took about 2 months between the time when Carson Daly was talkin about the making of the video and its actual release. So by the time the video dropped, EVERYONE already knew the song. It still was a hit but I think that excellent video would have propelled Eminem past diamond (10 mil) if it had come out right after the 1st single. That joint had the potential of being a PLATINUM single, fo' real. Even peeps who don't like Em or rap loved that joint...
+ KURUPT - I don't know what the hell he's waiting for, before droppin his second single and erase that "It's over" memory...
+ DR DRE - They talked about "Fuck You" (remix) with Ms Roq. It NEVER came out...
+ STICKY FINGAZ - Never dropped a second single and the first one (Get It Up), I only saw it once on BET waaayyy before the album dropped...
+ EASTSIDAZ - Don't know what the hell they be doing either. They can't see their sales droppin' like crazy??? They have enough dope songs to release...
+ DOGGY'S ANGELS - "Pleezbelivit" came up wayyyyyy to late... Could have saved the sales coz it was a dope track...
+ WYCLEF - he released that dumb joint, "Perfect Gentleman" almost a a year (or a few months less than a year) after "911". He's lucky he just got certified platinum (last month)...
+ EVE - What the fuck she be doing, leavin off that sick ass DRE joint forever, gettin at Award shows instead of droppin' a 3rd single??? (Jadakiss already got 3 after all; he just released "We gonna make it" a few days ago...)
+ BEANIE SIGEL - Worst promo of all... He did the very same thing with his 1st 2 singles off "The Truth". Now he's not even droppin a second one to push The Reason... It's already kinda late...
+ PRODIGY - Both his videos came too late to promote H.N.I.C. And the second one (with BG from Cash Money) was the worst joint off his album. That's why he went double wood (a shame when Mobb Deep is platinum after all)...
+ ERICK SERMON - If his new album, MUSIC, really came out today like I heard, it's fucked up he doesn't even have one video out at the moment to support it and gain momentum after the success of the "Music" joint...
AND I COULD GO ON FOREVER... So what y'all think about this trend???

I agree, they should be droppin as many videos as they can in the shortest amount of time. That way you can sell as much as possible while your album is being promoted and its still hot. Lets face it, the more people see your face, the more popular you get. Thats why all of the "hip-pop" artists sell so well cause they got their mugs on TV all the time or there video getds alot of play (like Jiggas video has been getting mad play).

I think that in some cases, dropping a single later will boost sales. People may have heard the first single, and thought it was hot, and were meaning to get the album, but forgot/didnt have enough money/etc... When the second single is released it gives them that much more incentive to go out and get the album. It shows the buyer that the album is not just a one hit album, but has depth and there is more than one good song. I do agree that "Get you walk" on was released a little late, but watch xzibit on soundscan for the next couple of weeks. if it gets even moderate video/radio play, I can guarantee that his sales will go up.

U have a good point but I could add, let's say, BILAL to that list I put up earlier (hmmm, yet another Interscope artist by the way, after Em, D12, Dre, Eve...). He released not 1 but 2 videos BEFORE his album dropped. "Soul Sista" came up too early, "Luv it" didn't get played. Now, "Fast Lane", a potential hit, does not in my opinion get the airplay it should. Plus i think it came up a lil late (should have been 2nd single for example). So, waiting can be tricky sometimes... See, that new cat Petey Pablo, he better drop his shit real quick coz he's on heavy rotation right now. If he waits too long (which i think he does coz he's comin out Oct 23rd I think), I don't know what's gonna happen to his sales... That's one thing smart artists like JIGGA understands: even if u have to drop an album earlier than anticipated, do so; so u come out WHILE u're HOT. Not before, not after... See NELLY??? Cat doesn't fuck around. He's trying to get his Diamond plate; he's droppin' videos one after another. He might not reach 10 mil, but guess why he sold so many records already: VIDEOS... MTV, BET all day... That's GOOD business...
