New West Talk
« on: May 30, 2007, 07:50:19 PM »
This is fairly long so if your up to it, read and have your input.

I Just read the Clinton Wayne interview XL Middleton put up, and he stated how if you not from LA, Watts or Compton, you basically don't exist.

Usually when there is talk about new west, it's usually talk about Bishop Lamont and Glasses Malone etc etc.

But there is so much talent from artists that come under 'New West' category, it's too hard to see many of them blowing up.....

I mean besides B Lamont and G Malone I can name a heap of artists I consider come under NEW WEST category. Bad Lucc, Damani, Styliztik Jones, Sixx John, Omar Cruz, Young Maylay, Mykestro, Y.A., Problem, Akademik, One-2, Xl Middleton, Prophet, Conflict, Jay Rock, Gail Gotti etc...Then you got I.E which has talent such as Sly Boogy, Dr Stank, Dirty Dirdy, Lunch, Diamonique, 40 glocc etc and of course YAY area with The Pack, Balance, Roscoe Umali, Big rich, Casual etc etc etc....I suppose Crooked I can even fit into this category even though hes been in the game waaaaaaay longer than the rest..same for Eastwood.

I mean I just thought all of them off the top of my head, Im sure there is plenty more I have forgotten about.

The only 'NEW WEST' artists that has broke through is Game (sad as it is)....Like it would be good if a Sly Boogy or someone such as Crooked I who has been in the industry for such a long time, would have broken through when their buzz was strong enough too. The thing probably missing is having the machine behind them to do it.

It seems that you have to have support from your own are or affiliated to one group or another to even get a chance...no real avenue for someone to craft their own skills and pave the way for themsleves....

Like the point Clinton Wayne said about being from LA, Watts or Compton to be even considered New West...Like Bay artists got their own support which have pretty much seperated themselves from LA and rest of cali when maybe bridges should be being built so that everyone from cali can support everyone else from cali too not just Bayb support bay, LA support whatever hood they from in LA (even more seperated)....I.E. trying to get together thier own Movement...and Omar Cruz who has Latin community as well as industry behind him....

Apart from XL Middleton wh seems to fit well in grinding his way through the indy market, it seems most of the other artists I have mentioned are trying for major labels....

Damani, Omar Cruz, Bad Lucc (I think hes signed? if not has Western Union thing going for him), Mykestro (is he signed?), 40 Glocc (Spider Loc), Lunch, Bishop Lamont and Glases Malone seem to be West only chance of blowing up. (I feel Crooked I lost his highest buzz years ago, as with Sly Boogy who Sway/Bolo records or whatever stuffed around)...To be realistic, Out of those signed to majors, Maybe only 1 or 2 if we are lucky will blow up.....I think Omar Cruz may be best shot, and Western Union if they play thier cards right might have a reasonable career. Bishop Lamont on Aftermath and we all know thats not the best label to blow up new talent....Game had to go with G-unit to be where he is today.

In otherwords, There is plenty of talent looking to go major, but barely any of them will be little more than a 'NEW WEST' category artist, sadly to say....

What are your thoughts/ How can this change?

Yeah I agree. Out of all those artists you mentioned, I think Omar has got the best chance of blowing up. Plus, he just did the Cuervoton tour across the United States (New York, Houston, Miami, Chicago & Phoenix) which will probably have given him very decent exposure too.
