Feilhaber's strike earns U.S. the Gold Cup
« on: June 24, 2007, 02:20:20 PM »
Associated Press

CHICAGO -- Change the venue, change the coaches, change the players. The only thing that doesn't change when Mexico and the United States play is the result.

Landon Donovan scored his 34th career goal, tying Eric Wynalda atop the career list, and Benny Feilhaber connected on a gorgeous volley as the United States rallied for a 2-1 victory over Mexico on Sunday in the final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the championship of North and Central America and the Caribbean.

The victory extended the Americans' dominance over their neighbors to the south and gave them a berth in the 2009 Confederations Cup in South Africa. The United States is 9-2-1 against Mexico since 2000, including 8-0-1 on U.S. soil.

Mexico at least managed a goal this time, snapping a streak of eight straight shutouts. Jose Andres Guardado's goal in the 44th minute was El Tri's first on U.S. soil in 797 minutes.

Mexico had a chance to tie it in the 89th minute when Adolfo Bautista came up with a loose ball in front of the goal. But Tim Howard reached up as he was falling, and punched the ball free to preserve the win.

This is the fourth Gold Cup title for the Americans, tying them with Mexico. It also kept new coach Bob Bradley's unbeaten record intact at 10-0-1. Bradley took over as interim coach after Bruce Arena was let go after the World Cup, and was given the job permanently May 16.

Mexico should have won.

That goes to show you how weak Mexico is right now, strategy wise.  U.S.A plays their worst game in the tourney while Mexico plays their best and look at the outcome.

Yeah man. I don't follow soccer like I use to, so is Sanchez that bad of a coach? What makes him so bad?

His ego is too huge, he thinks he's bigger than the players.  Sure he's a legend, but as a player not a coach.  Check out what he said yesterday

"Si no crecemos, no va a ser por culpa mía, porque yo ya gané, yo ya triunfé y lo que quiero es irradiar esa mentalidad triunfadora y ganadora que tengo, para mi gente, mis jugadores, mis ciudadanos y mis paisanos, que consigamos éxito y triunfo, y si no quieren ganar es que no me están haciendo caso, como les digo a los jugadores, háganme caso cabrones"

Is that really the type of attitude you want from someone that is in charge of an entire team?  He uses an old school 4-4-2, where the striker has very little mobility up top.  The wingers are by themselves, and have a hard time attacking.  So far, the only times Mexico has seen that there is some life in them it's when certain individual talents create plays for themselves.  Rafa Marquez even says that the team was better under LaVolpe.  LaVolpe was a huge strategist, he basically had a bible of pre-determined plays, Hugo is strictly a motivator.  The players are going from a true leader and strategist to an egotistical cheerleader?  Hugo won't last long.

After the penalty on Team Mexico for tripping, I bet the player was disappointed all he got was a yellow card, and not a green card. GO USA!
