Arenas to be suspended for remainder of season

A person familiar with today's meeting between Gilbert Arenas and NBA Commissioner David Stern said the Wizards' three-time all-star guard requested to be suspended for the remainder of the season and sources said that Stern plans to abide by the request.

According to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Arenas also told Stern that he would tell the players' union not to fight the suspension. Stern will announce his ruling later this afternoon.

Arenas met with Stern at the league offices in New York for nearly an hour on Wednesday afternoon. He was accompanied by his attorney, Ken Wainstein.

The meeting came nearly two weeks after Arenas pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge and was expected to provide Stern with the final details before he determined a punishment for Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton, who were involved in a locker room dispute in which guns were displayed at Verizon Center on Dec. 21.

Arenas was suspended indefinitely for his behavior after the incident was first reported, including taking an infamous picture in which he mocked shooting his teammates with his fingers before a game in Philadelphia on Jan. 5. Arenas has missed the past 12 games while serving the suspension. The Wizards have 38 games remaining, which would put his season total at 50 games.

The same source said that during the meeting, Arenas expressed concern about the possibility of having the remainder of his four-year, $80-million contract voided, to which Stern replied, "That would be left up to the team." He also informed Arenas that member of the Wizards organization had yet made an inquiry about voiding his contract to the NBA's legal department.

Arenas also has intimated to friends, the NBA and legal representatives that he has no desire to play for Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld again, according to a person familiar with Arenas's situation.

Arenas faces sentencing on March 26.

If he had just owned up to it and apologized when it happened he probably wouldn't have been suspended the whole season. Instead he made a joke out of it and made himself look like an even bigger idiot.

haha, even worse. he apologized first, and THEN made a big joke out of it, making every apology he made afterwards look insincere. i dont think i've ever seen any athlete handle an incident like this worse than he did.

but in his defense, maybe the season-long suspension was inevitable, because they suspended crittenton for a whole season too.

He'll get another team. Michael Vick did, Lee Hughes did (footballer who ran over and killed someone in a car accident then drove away without reporting it). As long as he is still a good player teams will still hire him regardless of his reputation. Sad but true.

Yeah and in all seriousness, I think people are overexaggerating what he did anyways. While the concept of a gun in the lockerroom is obviously pretty horrible, he didn't actually do anything with it, and according to him the reason it was there in the first place was because he was keeping it away from his family and had plans on getting rid of it.

Stephen Jackson fired a gun at a club and only got a few games suspension. Hell Latrell Spreewell fuckin choked his coach and still managed to play in the NBA again.

yeah interesting point you made there about stephen jackson, he actually fired a gun and was giving a timid suspension. but once the media got hold of the arenas story then that shit wasnt going away in a hurry. i think the nba because it was in the spotlight had to make a judgement and a severe one at that.

interesting how arenas and crintentton both asked stern to be banned without pay for the whole year, that takes some balls and the next big thing will arenas mammoth contract be void? the future of the wizards could hinge on that

Forreal, but I think part of the reason the media continued to push the story had to do with how Arenas handled the situation and made it look like a joke, so I think the NBA figured "fuck it, lets penalize him and move on." Crittenton obviously gets hurt from this as well because Arenas is a big name.

If I'm correct, the word is Arenas will ask the Players Union to not interfere on his behalf and let the Wizards terminate  his contract. Worst case scenario for Wizards is that they'll probably be able to buy out his contract for a very low price.
