Author Topic: I'd appreciate your thoughts for my cousin and his family...  (Read 146 times)

This past week I realized how fast life can turn on you. Last friday my cousin was driving drunk and crashed into a parked car. He had two passengers in his car, both of them weren't wearing seatbelts. One of the passengers was ejected from the  vehicle and was killed. The other was sent to a hospital in critical condition, but is  now in stable condition. My cousin lived, he was injured, but not seriously.

However, now legal issues press on him. He is being charged with "Homicide while driving a vehicle while intoxicated" ... my cousin, who I wasn't very close with now has this to deal with. His family does too. He's always been a little troublemaker and has had run-in's with the law before, but nothing real serious. His face, his story is all over local newspapers, radio and television. They make him out to be a killer. His best friend was killed in the accident and he is being charged for it, which is understandable. If convicted, he could spend up to 37.5 years in prison. He is 22 now, if he got the worst punishment, he wouldn't be out until he was 60 yrs old.

I'm just asking for your support. He should've never drove while drinking, it was a huge mistake. He lost his best friend cause of that mistake, almost killed his other friend and nearly himself. He deserves punishment, but I don't believe at the maximum. He's made mistakes in the past and this should  really open his eyes.  I just hope he can get through this as well as all the families who are dealing with it.

Thank you

damn man that sucks.  My cousin's husbands younger brother was in a similar situation.  He was driving a toyota pick up drunk and he got in a head on with a car.  The car was way lower to the ground and so his truck decapitated the guy, and he also ended up with a broken back.  I don't think he was paralyzed at all, but he is in prison right now.  I think he has been in for 5 years and gets out after 6.  Your cuzzin won't go for 37.5 years, probably not even close to half of that.  He should hire a really good attourny.  If he  hires a good attourney he can make a change in the rest of his life.  These are years of his life we are talking about here, beg his parents to shell out some cash.  Now I am not saying that DD is not bad, but you gotta make the best of the situation.  Putting this guy in prison is gonna do nothing but negatively effect his and people around him's lives.  I am sure he feels tons of regret, more than most people ever feel in their lives, for killing his best friend.  It is obvious that he wasn't trying to kill his best friend, so I think homicide is a bit much.

Well id hate for anyone to be put in prison for that amount of time for that type of crime....yes very bad but paedophiles and out and out murders get less jail time here so in that way i think its wrong...

...and for such a young person to be facing literally all his life in jail for a crime that he will suffer for for probably the rest of his life anyway (conscience) it is very sad.

He will never be recless or drink drive again..i hope he doesnt get the maximum penalty bro

Damn that's fucked up...

This hits close to home cuz I'm alwayz driving around with my homies all tossed up and stoned.. If it's as big of a deal as you said, on tha radio and papers and shit, then they might be a lil harder on him to make an example out of him...

Probably depends on how tha parents of his friends feel too... do they blame him? Or maybe he was a real close friend of tha family and they will be understanding and drop tha charges.. .But then you still got tha D.A..  You'd think losing his best friend would be punishment enough... they dont..

He just needs to get an attourney like homey said above... who knows though... this is one of them situations when you just look to God...

i know of 2 situations where the person didnt get in trouble... My girls cousins boyfriend was drivin drunk and hit another car and killed the other drivers in the car..He is free and never went to jail...These two kids that went to my school were driving drunk down 95 and the driver lived and the passenger died. He didnt get put in jail either. But i do know of cases where they did go to jail...My dads best friend was in a corvette and the driver lost control and killed the pasenger..He went to jail for vehicular homicde

Judicial system in America is unfair we all know that, but your cousins was responsible for the death of a person.** We should have some type of set punishment for drunk drivers killing people. Your lucky your cousin is not black and his friend was white becuase they would have gave him the death penalty. Thats how backwards it is here.

But seriously "his blood-alcohol level registered 0.08 about two hours after the crash".
Thats crazy and he was "driving 50 mph to 60 mph when he lost control of his car and hit a parked pickup truck with such force it sheared off much of the car's passenger side and part of its roof".

**Were his two friends also drunk? Because if they weren't no one should feel sorry for them and the charges on your cousin should be dropped to manslaughter or something lower.

I will be a Lawyer.

I wasn't serious read what I said right after that
I was joking but punishments on black vs. white crime are harsher in America than white vs. white.
