Password Protected Folders?
« on: August 18, 2003, 10:47:13 PM »
Wattup.
I wanna make 1 folder for me to keep my "movies" in. Is there a way to make a folder password protected so that only someone with the password can go inside the folder?

I right clicked the folder (I actually have it made), and then clicked properties...I made a password for it but I dont want to have to make a password protected user account. I share the computer but Im the one thats mostly on the computer, and my parents just wanna go on the internet so they dont need their own user account.

I just want to be safe just incase they find the folder, and I want it so that once you click on it, it says "Please Enter Your Password:"

Thanks.

I have tried 3-4 of those, and only one of them work properly imo..
3 of the others, I could easily find a way to get around..
The only one that worked was a program called "Folder Guard"..

http://www.winability.com/home/
or

U can choose between either password protecting the folders you choose
or better yet
Restrict certain folders from being viewable on each account.

Say there's 4 accounts on your PC.
You have a folder called "C:/Ztuff" that you want only yourself to see..
Then you go into FOLDER GUARD, and disable "user can view" for all accounts except yourself.. so they wont even know that the folder is there.
They can not open the program Folder Guard neither, cuz you will need the password you choose to open the program..  8)

On Windows XP, you can also password protect a folder IF you are running the file system NTFS.
I'm running FAT32 on WinXP, so I cant choose that.. but IF you're running NTFS..

Right-click the harddrive you want to check, e.g. C:/ and choose PROPERTIES.
It says there if you have NTFS or FAT32..
To pass protect a folder, right click the folder, and hit PROPERTIES, and "SHARE" or something in there, I cant tell cuz I got Norwegian WinXP.
In there, choose "Make this folder private"....

You can do it the way Jome's saying, however whoever logs on as Administrator can take ownership again of the folder & override any permissions you set on it, pretty much making it useless.

You need a seperate user account, but logon to the machine if you're using NTFS and not FAT/FAT32 as your filesystem, right click the folder, select properties. Click the Security tab, remove the Everyone group. Click Add, then select your user and tick the full control box.

I havent really bothered with the other password utilities, although around when win98 first came out I used something called 'Magic Folders' for a while, dont know if its still around.
