On The Edge of Insanity

I got into the venue very earlier (my train into London was actually on time!), and just chilled, had a few beers while the DJ went through loads of old jazz tracks, with a bit of soul thrown in as well. There was no support act lined up, just a BBE DJ who came on around half eight, and played a dope mix of hiphop, and soul and jazz tracks that had been used in hiphop.

Around nine thirty Phonte and Big Pooh came out on stage along with DJ Flash, Yazarah and Darien Brockington. They opened with a track that is going to be on "The Minstral Show" and then proceeded to go through a lot of the classics from the Listening, including the title track, "Getup", "For You" and "The Yo-Yo". Throughout the early part Nicolay was sat on the stairs leading down to the stairs, but then when they went into some of the tracks off of the Foreign Exchange album, Nicolay came down onto the stage (to a great reception), and played the keyboard synths for "Be Alright", "Nics Groove" and most of the FE tracks that were performed. Darien did his track offa the FE album, which was real dope, and then Yazarah and Phonte did "Sincere" which was one of the nights highlights. Along with the FE material they were also doing more tracks from The Listening, "Speed" being an obvious highlight, along with "Whatever You Say" and "Love Joint Revisited", the track they did on Pete Rock's Soul Survivor 2, and also Big Pooh did a track off of his soon to be released debut "Sleepers", and everyone on stage seemed to be having a real good time, Phonte handing out bottles of beer to people in the crowd, and the general rapport between group and audience being top notch. Near the end of the concert they all sang Al Green's "Lets Stay Together", before Phonte said that they had one more song to do, and that it needed to show how live we could get. Everyone cheered, and then they went into "Make Me Hot", which got everyone dancing, and was a dope way to end a really dope concert.

Overall, I think they provided a great nights entertainment, they did all of their dopest tracks, and the vibe between audience and group was brilliant throughout the whole concert. I think they definitely saw the love that seems to be their for them over here, and I don't think anyone who was at the concert would even think about missing out on them when they next come over. After the concert they stayed around to sign autographs and chat to the fans, but unfortunately I was way too steamed to contemplate anything but getting back to my hotel and flopping, so missed out on that, but hopefully next time they come over I will be sober enough to have words with them. Overall, a great night.

On The Edge of Insanity

No doubt, I love the Jazz Cafe. I think DJ Premier's doing a DJ set there the night of the Snoop gig in London from 11pm-2am, will probably make my way over to the Jazz Cafe once Snoop ends, should be a dope night.
