Snoop makes a stop for burger in Bishop
Police search rap artist's bus for pot but find only resin

BISHOP - The bowls in rapper Snoop Dogg's bus were empty Friday night, and that kept him out of the doghouse.

Snoop's two tour buses blocked the driveway to the Dairy Queen parking lot, and the drivers refused the restaurant manager's request to move them, witnesses said.

But when Bishop Police Sgt. Joe Henry Hernandez arrived, the buses moved. No problem.

That is, until a member of the Dogg Pound, Snoop's entourage, whispered to Hernandez that Snoop was on the bus. Along with the Dogg Pound hound's words flowed the ripe scent of marijuana from on his breath and clothes, Hernandez said.

That right there was probable cause.

When the Bishop police searched the buses, the stink of weed smacked them in the nostrils, Hernandez said. But Hernandez - and his partner, Officer Mark Dimacali, who was brought up in Los Angeles near Snoop's hometown - found only a trace of pot resin. Hernandez said it wasn't enough to press charges.

After about 90 minutes, Snoop and the Dogg Pound drove off.

Hernandez said the rap artist, who is penciled in to portray Huggy Bear in the upcoming Starsky and Hutch movie, was quiet and polite.

"He was real cooperative," Hernandez said. "Snoop's an ordinary person. He went to the Dairy Queen to eat. We're all ordinary, at least when our stomachs are hungry." Snoop ate a burger, Hernandez said.

Though Hernandez and Dimacali initially tried to downplay the rapper's stop-off on the way from San Antonio to McAllen, they eventually smiled and admitted it was exciting.

"It's a 'Wow!' for Bishop," Hernandez said.

Much of the DQ Round Table, a group of retired men who sit around a faux wood table and talk about world's problems, said they heard of the Snoop stop. One said the buses were the nicest he'd ever seen. Another said the police did a darn good job.

But all in all, most of the retirees were unimpressed by Snoop's stop.

"I'd just hope they don't rap as long as they are here," Joe Moring said. "We're more in tune with country music and church hymns."

Moring much preferred to talk about the time when baseball legend Nolan Ryan came in for a soda a couple of years ago.

The mayor spoke more politically than the Round Table men did about the visit.

"We welcome everyone in Bishop," Mayor Geri Rypple said, as she sat at a desk in front of a photo of herself and Gov. Rick Perry. "We'd love to have a lot of entertainers come by and raise money for the city."

Rypple quickly clarified that any entertainer could raise money by performing - not feeding the legal system with fines.

Like the Round Table members, Rypple is not much of a fan of Snoop's tunes.

"I think I'll still listen to my easy-listening, country-western and oldies," she said and added that she used to be a big Elvis fan.

Elvis, however, hasn't been seen in Bishop, she said.

Rypple was a little reluctant to talk much about Snoop. Instead, she kept trying to redirect the conversation to the concerns of Bishop. She mentioned that someone broke into the animal shelter Tuesday night and freed some animals.

They were all dogs.

Rypple said there is likely no connection between Snoop and the local dog pound break. Then, she thought out loud about the dog that hasn't been caught yet.

"Maybe he took a bus trip," she said.
