Bully to Be Judged
A court in Florida will decide whether or not the game is a public nuisance.

October 11, 2006 - Today, in a courtroom in Florida, attorneys for Take-Two, Wal-Mart, and GameStop appeared to defend next week's release of Bully. Anti-videogame crusader Jack Thompson had previously made a bid to keep the game from being sold in the state on grounds that it is a "public nuisance." The hearing ended with an unprecedented order from Judge Ronald Friedman.

Take-Two has 24 hours to produce Friedman with a copy of Bully. The judge will review the game as it is being played, for 100 hours or more, and then decide whether or not Thompson's claims are valid. If the two agree, retailers will be prohibited from selling the Teen-rated game to minors. For their part, Wal-Mart and GameStop are worried about losing sales should the legislation pass.

Bully has been receiving lots of press in the ramp up to next week's release, and it's looking like the game isn't quite what its detractors have made it out to be. Previews reveal that the title is low on the violence developer Rockstar has become known for, and high on social commentary about how rough school can be for kids

This shit was brought up about two years ago, when the title 'Bully' was revealed. MPs, Journos and of course Jack Thompson went wild over it.
They said it would encourage playground fights and all kinds of shit, but at the time no-one oustide of Rockstar knew what the game was about or even seen a screenshot. Typical fucking media/politics hysteria.

They've renamed the game in the UK as Canem Canis Edit, but I'm sure some tabloid will blame the game for school violence in the next few months.

^The funny thing is that the game is very much old skool Bash Street kids style, with stink bombs and peashooters. You protect the geeks and fight the bullies, but someone, somewhere will find something "controversial".

There's not much violence beyond the cartoonish stuff; in one of the special moves you use your opponent's fists to hit their face and start chanting "Why are you hitting yourself? Why are you hitting yourself?"

Rather than relying on an assortment of light and heavy attacks spread out across multiple buttons, however, Bully is pressure and context sensitive. That means that where your opponent is located and how long and hard you press the attack button determines what happens next. Early on in the game, Jimmy, the 15 year-old protagonist, can only perform a shallow selection of moves -- your standard punches, a grapple (Circle), Block (R1), kicks when an opponent is down (Square again)... things of that nature -- but as our hero continues to work his way up the ladder, a number of new maneuvers will open up (the majority of which will be taught to you by attending gym class or from a hobo who's also a fighting expert). When powered all the way up, even the Karate Kid's nemesis Johnny Lawrence will fear you.

Perhaps the most inviting thing about Bully's combat system, though, is that it isn't just limited to combo moves and a series of repetitive attacks. Even in the early version we sampled, Jimmy can already pull off humiliation moves from the start (press circle when prompted after you've done enough damage). These humiliations put an automatic end to the fight and add a bit of visual "oomph" to the action. Our personal favorite is the classic "Why are you hitting yourself?" technique that allows you to punch an enemy in the face with his own fists. Players can also expect to use a variety of different weapons with things like Cricket and baseball bats, eggs, and slingshots. But if you're worried about over-excessive violence, don't worry: there won't be any blood, disfigurement, or death.
