9th Wonder no longer in Little Brother...
« on: January 28, 2007, 08:56:48 PM »
Just picked this up.  Feeling pretty shitty about it.

http://www.hiphopgame.com/news.php3?id=1510

"First, I want to say that Little Brother has not been dropped from
Atlantic," Rapper Pooh told HipHopGame. "At this time we are in the
process of negotiating our release from the label due to a difference in
philosophies."

"We asked to be released," Manager Big Dho added. "I think we may just
put the album out on Asylum to close our deal, but it's definitely a
wrap for us at Atlantic. We weren't happy with how things were going and
we decided we wanted to leave and on their end, they decided that they
didn't want to deal with that either."

"It's no big deal though," Dho added. "Nobody on our end is mad or has
any ill feelings towards their company."

"It wasn't a situation where they decided to drop us due to lack of
sales," Pooh said. "If that was the case, they never would have opened
up the budget for us to record Getback ."

Getback, Little Brother's third album, is close to completion but has no
release date yet.

"We as a group just felt that it was not in our best interest to remain
in a situation where our needs were constantly being overlooked. We
didn't have an A&R for The Minstrel Show. We don't have any type of
relationship with our current A&R. There are just a lot of internal
issues that ended up working against us."

Pooh also addressed the rumors regarding producer 9th Wonder's
involvement, or lack thereof, in Little Brother's Getback.
"Little Brother has decided, in the best interest
of the group, for Little Brother and 9th Wonder to part ways.
There are no hard feelings and no
beef. This is just a decision that had to be made so all three of us
could move forward and continue to provide the world with dope music.

Little Brother's latest mixtape, And Justus For All, mixed by DJ Mick
Boogie, will be available for download February 13. "The decision to
release And Justus For All via download was a decision made by us. After
the Drama situation, we felt it was in the best interest of all of us to
just give this mixtape away with the current climate of the mixtape
scene."

And Justus For All will be available for download February 13. More
details on where to download it will be given closer to the release
date.

I also checked their myspace, and it only shows Phonte and Pooh as members of the group.

I must say that this definitely sucks, but who knows, I think they will still put out quality shit.  Their next album "Getback" was due this year, and everything that I had read had said that 9th only had one beat that made the cut.  I guess Phonte wasn't really feelin his shit or something.  Of course, 9th was gettin work and getting in demand, so maybe it was just a deal where he wasn't availble to work on their next album, and they felt like they had to move on.  Who knows.  When you consider this, it's not that surprising that this happened.

if you post over at the lawn, phonte is kinda addressing some shit...there's obviously some more to it than is being said...and while it is sad news, im intrigued to hear what the future holds for LB and 9th...as far as i can see, they'll still work together, but hes no longer part of the group...the Get Back is gonna be very interesting...and for those that dont know, Little Brother have a new mixtape coming out in the next few weeks with Mick Boogie called "And Justus For All", with collabos with Khrysis, Illmind, Nottz and a few surprises too...not all bad news as its a free, internet-only release...

from hiphopsite.com

While Little Brother is hard at work finishing up their third LP for Atlantic, Get Back, the group will team up with Mick Boogie for the release of And Justus For All, an unofficial sequel to last year's collabo with (ahem) DJ Drama, Separate But Equal. The new CD will be released on February 13th, just in time for NBA Allstar Weekend - happening right here in Las Vegas - where Little Brother will perform with Lupe Fiasco at Empire Ballroom, on the night of the CD's release.

The CD is much more like an album than a typical "mix CD", as it includes a host of totally new, exclusive songs that will not be included on Get Back. "I don't do the 'freestyle' thing to often, because honestly, rapping over other niggas' instrumentals bores me. I'd rather make something fresh," Phonte told HipHopSite. "That's what this is, fresh new music and recently released LB tracks to get people ready for Get Back."

"And Justus For All" will include guest appearances from each Ray Cash, Rhymefest, Supastition, Skillz, Talib Kweli, Kardinall Offishal, Oddisee, Bishop Lamont, and of course, the HOJ family.

Whoa, that came unexpected. Little Brother was like the only hiphop group really dropping some interesting music for me to listen to, but without 9th's beats I'm a little sceptical about what's left of their chemistry. We'll have to see how this turns out, but the odds are against them. That's some bad news man...

Didnt see that coming.   :-\ The good thing though is that Crisis and some other producers did beats on their last album.  I don't anticipate any drop off but I will miss 9th for sure.  They will probably do a track or two together on the next lp.

This upsets me quite a bit.  Little Brother without 9th Wonder is hard for me to imagine even though I've heard solo tracks before.  But I guess it was inevitable.  Let's face it...9th Wonder is WAY bigger than either Phonte or Pooh at this point, and he's the reason they even got their deal in the first place.
