Sedins staying put

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/07/01/canucks_sedins/

The Sedin twins are staying in Vancouver. The Vancouver Canucks re-signed Daniel and Henrik to five-year deals averaging $6.1 million, sources tell Sportsnet.

The 28-year-old twins have been mainstays with the Canucks since being drafted No. 2 (Daniel) and No. 3 (Henrik) overall in the 1999 draft. Vancouver re-signed both as restricted free agents in 2006 to identical deals that paid them $3.575 million each this past season.

Daniel, a left winger, had 31 goals and 82 points in 2008-09 and was a plus-24, while centre Henrik also had 82 points (22 goals) and was a plus-22.

Whether the Canucks could or would re-sign the pair was a season-long story in Vancouver, a task made more difficult by the worsening economy and the brothers’ insistence that they come as a package deal that would pay them about $63 million each over 12 years.

Canucks GM Mike Gillis made a last-minute trip to Sweden on Monday to present them with an upgraded deal.

Hossa Signs With the Hawks

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed free agent forward Marian Hossa to a 12-year deal worth an average of $5.3 million.

Hossa made news last summer when he turned down several huge multi-year deals from teams such as Pittsburgh –with whom he’d gone to the Stanley Cup final in 2008 – and Edmonton to sign a one-year deal with Detroit worth $7.45 million. He hoped to win a Cup with the Red Wings, but ironically, lost in this year’s Cup final to his former Penguins teammates.

As late as Tuesday the Wings made an offer of a 10-year deal that would have averaged close to $4 million a season, but the 30-year-old winger turned it down.

Hossa had a good regular season in 2008-09, scoring 40 goals and 71 points, but his stock took a hit after a lackluster playoff performance in which he scored just six goals in 23 games.

Yeah I'm shocked at hossa with Chicago. It makes them a force but at the same time the length of the deal fucks them over in the future. What happens when that young talent they have needs a new contract in a year or two?

Oilers make splash with Khabibulin

The Edmonton Oilers have signed free agent goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin to a four-year, $15-million contract, sources tell Sportsnet.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2009/07/01/rangers_sign_gaborik/

Rangers sign Gaborik away from Wild

The New York Rangers have signed free agent forward Marion Gaborik to a five-year, $37.5 million-deal.

Gaborik was the only remaining player from their original Wild's inception, and was Minnesota's first draft pick nine years ago.

Gaborik wanted to test the market, so the Wild had little chance to lock him up.

The 27-year-old Gaborik has been limited by injuries in recent seasons, but he is Minnesota's career scoring leader and one of the NHL's elite skaters when healthy.
