Waiting To Inhale still hasn't grown on me
« on: March 30, 2007, 10:42:34 AM »
Well, I bought this the day it dropped and I've played it constantly. I'm a huge Devin fan (he's easily in my top 10 artists of all time), but this is by far his worst album. The production, for the most part, is crap, the mixing on some songs is bad (the vocal mix on 'She Wants That Money' is abysmal) and the songs simply aren't as well crafted as those on the previous three albums. The beats are boring and nowhere near as musical or complex as his other albums.

All the bloggers and fans saying this is an amazing album have to be saying it because it's fashionable. When 'To The X-treme' dropped, no one here was raving about it, despite the fact it's an amazing album. Suddenly, Devin is 'trendy', so everyone is over-rating this new CD... It kinda pisses me off, because he's ending up best know for a record that displays little of the talent he has.

In short, there's nothing on this album as uplifting as 'Do What U Wanna Do' or 'Unity', nothing as humorous as 'Lacville 79' or 'Boo Booin', nothing as soulful as 'Anythang' or 'Alright'.

Is there no one else who agrees with me that this album has been horribly overrated? And to those who are calling it a great album, I'd be interested to hear your comparisons compared with his earlier CDs.

Yeah, I said 'comparisons compared with'. Big deal. Wanna fight about it?

I didn't think it was excellent either. Not bad, just not what I expected from Devin compared to his last 3.

I liked it a lot.  I liked it better than To Tha X Treme, and I think its more consistent than his other previous 2 (his other two have more standout tracks though.)  I've been a Devin fan for probably the last five years, before it was "trendy" or whatever.  I think that the mix of tracks on here is perfect, and all the songs are great.  It feels like Devin got into his comfort zone with this one, maybe its become too easy for him, maybe that's why you see it as lackluster.

I just don't know man! I respect your opinion Edizzle... that's why I wanted to make this post, because I find it really odd that I seem to have just missed something with this album. The majority opinion seems to be that it's a near-classic and maybe his best, and if people think that then cool. But I find it odd that as such a big Devin fan I'm at the opposite end of that spectrum... it makes me feel like I must like the guy's music for different reasons or something... I'm wondering if someone can point to something that will make me hear somehting new on this album... but I'm not hopeful.

I am feeling it, 8 out of 10 maybe, but after 3 Devin album's, they just aren't getting any better. It's not like the music is whack, I'd say this is maybe the 6th best album this year.

After the 2nd listening, I'm really feeling this.

Lil Girl Gone, What A Job, She Useta Be, No Longer Needed, Just Because and Somebody Else's Wife are all really good tracks.

Who features on S.E.W. ?

This album is more along the lines of where "To The X-treme" left off, whereas I feel that his JTTL left off where "The Dude" began, pretty much had the same feel...I haven't really gotten into this album like the others, so far....It's kinda has a weird vibe to it, almost kinda depressing at times....I kinda had to warm up to "To The X-treme" after I got passed the first couple of traccs, which were heat...To me, this album isn't great, but it's not wacc either  :-\
